Have you seen ads promising easy money if you shrink-wrap your car — with ads for brands like Monster Energy, Red Bull, or Pepsi? The “company” behind the ads says all you have to do is deposit a check, use part of it to pay a specified shrink-wrap vendor, and drive around like you normally would. But don’t jump onto the bandwagon. It’s only easy money for the scammer who placed the ads.

How you spot the “offer”

You might see an ad on a job board or on social media. Or someone might send you a message — maybe because they saw your profile or resume on a job site.

How the scam works

The message says you’ll make a couple hundred bucks. But when the “company” sends you a check, it’s for much more than that — a couple thousand dollars. They tell you to deposit the check, keep part of it as your share, and wire the rest to another company that will wrap your car.

Weeks after you wire the money, the check bounces and your bank tells you it was a fake. The money you kept as “your share” disappears, and the money you wired is long gone — no getting it back. On top of that, you’re on the hook for paying your bank back for the fake check. And, of course, no one’s wrapping your car.

How you can tell it’s a scam

If you get a message urging you to deposit a check and wire money back, it’s a scam. Every time. No matter the story. And if this were a legitimate car wrap opportunity, wouldn’t the company directly pay the car-wrapping vendor, instead of asking you to do it?

My wife was sent one of these checks, I told her it was a scam, not to deposit it. She has now received a text from the guy, threatening that she has a check, and if she doesn't do anything he will get an attorney involved. I replied that we know it's a scam, my wife is going to show this treat to the sheriff.

I got a message via text for RIPIT ENERGY DRINKS sent me a check for 1,350.00 I wanted to see if the check was real so I called the bank on the check. And went to my bank for answers. I had to send this Gail Moody a text because she was rushing me to deposit the check.THEY sent the check via FedEx. Needless to say I got all involved that needed to be involved. So call the bank on the check it has to have an account number on the check . I GOOGLED the bank information. Talked to the lady at the bank, she called the account holder. Be a scam alerter Get all involved that needs to be involved even the police. I Know you don't want to end up paying back money that you don't have. Happy scamming for SCAMS.

This has happened, no joke, 3 times! About 5 minutes ago being the most recent. However I have not received any checks or anything, luckily. Knew it was too good to be true. One for Burger King another for Redbull and today it was Bang energy drink. People will try just about anything these days. Im wondering if and how often the scammers are caught?.... clearly not often enough

I fell for it a few years back ànd lost $2000 dollars. Then a month or so later they tried to get another $2000 out of my account by depositing another bad check directly into my account. They even used another name on the check. I called the bànk and asked why they even allowed the deposit if I wasn't the one who was on the check or had signed it. I found out the scammer had a teller friend at the bank in another part of the state. Luckily the bank agreed and did not charge me again. I had to close my account and open a new one. This past year I have been harassed through text about that same scam by multiple "companies". The latest is Breyer's ice cream. I want to know how to stop this. Scammers suck.

Sounds like easy money! 500 a week for the wrap. Check arrives with a phone number to verify receipt. You deposit the check and wire 2000 to the person that with be applyyyour vehicle wrap. Problem is that the check is a fraud and you are out 2500 bucks payable to your bank! I called Anheiser Busch and they stated their logo is a valuable commodity and they protect it so they would never use the public or private industry for this type of service. Contact ic3.gov to report the scam.

Dasani water company is in on it too. Just got a check for over 2 grand. $500 was supposed to be mine and the rest to the wrap company. I started asking all kinds of questions like why did they have a package that is sent from a medical group, the guy on the other end, named Carlos Lucas, had all the answers. I finally just told him to go away, and that I would shred the check. The phone number is from Nevada 1.702.625.5750.

I put my application in for the Monster Energy , and they sent me a check in the amount of 4,850.88 with a letter saying to deposit and keep 800.00 for my self and the other 4000.00 would be forwarded to the graphic artist, well they continued to e-mail me to see if I had deposited the check and I told them that I was going to talk to a bank officer to confirm that the check was legit, and they said that that was an insult and not to utter such statements again, (REALLY) so what ligament company would say that to someone. so I then said that if they would give me the name of the company that would be wrapping my car, then maybe we could move forward, and they said the they had their own Artist to install the decal's, so they are giving you money just to pay their own people, such a SCAM. don't do it, I was smart enough to try and figure it out. Oh an I did call the bank and the funds were available, but I believe they wait for you to deposit and then they withdraw the monies so that when the check actually hits their bank it's not there. Do not fall for these Scams!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
