Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

I received a call from ‭+1 (718) 703-2356‬, they left a vm saying my ssn was suspended. The grammar was poor so I knew it was a scam. Made me really anxious, tho, thinking someone would do this and was there any truth in it. Glad I googled it before I did anything else

It happened to me today in Maine in the afternoon. I dont usually answer any calls I dont know but I was waiting for an important delivery for a friend so was caught off guard. The number on my caller id read Florida. Could barely understand the woman who said she was officer number such-and-such and was calling because my ssn was being suspended due to suspicious activity. Luckily Im aware of the ridiculous amount of scamming going on out there but it still totally disturbed me. The phone number was 813-580-8519.

I have been receiving calls from several numbers, one being (205) 3044144, telling me that IRS is going to block my social security number because they have found out some irregularities against my driving license. When they asked to call back immediately, I did so out of curiosity and the moment I told them I don't even own a social security number ..what are you talking about? They curt the line. But the calls are never-ending. I keep getting them at my busiest hours from different numbers.

I was just looking through all of the comments and one commenter - LuLuLee - got calls from the exact number that I did. One of the numbers is: 833-268-3758. The other one is: 833-684-3182. Luckily I use the same rules as a previous poster: I NEVER, and I mean NEVER answer if is a number I do not recognize. It’s more rooted to the fact that I HATE phones and talking on the phone, rather than avoiding a scam. I entered the numbers I got calls from into the search engine. The number ending in 3758 was confirmed as a scam and a “do not answer” comment. The number ending in 3182 was being investigated but in all likelihood was also a scam. I think the fact that I rarely answer the phone is what kept me from being called several times per day like some of the other posters. My first clue was that the caller referring to the Social Security Administration referred to it as, “the Department of Social Security”. Also your SSN is pretty much assigned to you for life. They do NOT suspend it because it is tied to YOUR ID permanently until you die. I”ll continue to NOT answer. I also made a list of all the scam numbers reported here so I can hopefully avoid most of those calls. Best thing to do - DO NOT ANSWER THESE CALLS AND CERTAINLY DO NOT RETURN THE CALLS IF A MESSAGE IS LEFT. Also the Social Security Administration does NOT call you for that or most other reasons. The only time they call is if you have a phone appointment with them to assist with Medicare enrollment (which I do) or need assistance with other documentation. I agree with many other posters who are asking why the phone companies and/or the government aren’t making any effort to stop these calls. They should, at the very least inactivate numbers that have been shown to be scams.

Got a call from Pennsylvania. Man with foreign accent says I had reached the Social Security Administration office and the desk of a person but I could not understand what he was saying. I asked him when did Social Security start calling people. He abruptly hung up after I informed him that the Social Security Administration does not call people. No one would answer when I tried calling back.

For the past two days, I have been getting calls from 866-752-0973 about my ssn being suspended. It's the same message that others have received. I never answer my landline or my cell phone if I don't recognize the number, and I have deleted these scam messages. I worry about elderly people, people who aren't fluent in English and those who are not savvy about phone scams. It's not fair that anyone should be victimized by these lowlifes.
