Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

I just listened to a voicemail I received saying that my ss# was being suspended due to fraudulent activity. The first thing I did was look on line to see if there were any scams going on. Even though I know I’m good and doing nothing illegal, it still sends a little worry into the pit of your stomach until you figure it out. Just like if a cop is driving behind you and you know you’re not speeding or doing anything illegal. Glad I found this page right away!

They called and about 3x leaving a robocall each time. This is beyond Annoying.

I'm getting repeated calls for the same scam, back to back, over multiple days. The number changes every time. Typically they come in bursts of 5 in very short succession, and they always leave a message. Same garbled recording about my SSN being deactivated. There MUST be a way to get these to stop.

I just got a call that came up on my caller ID as Pinnacle Diamonds. I’ve gone to a doctors before that was pinnacle. I let it go to voicemail and an automated thing said to call1-800-498-6192 or legal action would proceed against me. My husband called the number back and the person that answered said they were from social security and had a very thick accent.

I received the same call just today 12:20PM. I am grateful to have found this page and I heard exactly the same thing from that scammer's prerecorded voice message. The number is 347-410-9414 so please beware! I blocked the number. I also changed my contact numbers when I moved to NYC. Apparently, the former owner of number assigned to me had a lot of issues in the past that I get calls from the court house, police station, credit card companies, child services. It sucks that these cellphone companies recycle old numbers! I wish there was a law not allowing that! Or a regulation to screen numbers before they are given to new subscribers.

This morning I keep getting calls from the number 618-424-4305, Stating the following information: “ The nature behind this call is to inform you about a suspension Notice we have received against your Social Security number, by the federal crime and investigation department. We need to talk to you as soon as possible. Again this call Is from social security administration. Number to reach department is 618-424-4305 “. So I did call the number a few times and told them to stop calling me and I accuse them of being fraudulent and illegal and they would just hang up on me. I then called back one more time to ask them what they thought they had against my Social Security number. The guy I talk to was definitely from India and said his name was Connor Smith and his agent number Number was IRC 405762. So I actually talk to this guy and he requested my name which I had no problem giving him that then he wanted my Social Security number and my birthdate. I said you should already have my Social Security number since you know it has been used. I said I’ll give you the last four digits and he said that was not good enough. I asked to speak to his supervisor and conveniently the supervisor was in a meeting. They just called me again while typing in this comment. So beware because they are liars and I seriously doubt there is an Indian they just called me again while typing in this comment. So beware because they are liars and I seriously doubt there is an Guy with the India accent, With the name Connor Smith. What a crock!

So I just got this call about my SS being at risk. It sounded quite suspicious, so I said, “This sounds like a scam,” and the person hung up faster than a New York minute. It’s a shame that these groups are stealing money from older people. Vengeance is the Lord’s and He will pay these people back for their terrible deeds. If not in this life, then in the next.

Rec'd a call 8 times in a row on my cell saying my SS number was used in criminal activity in Texas and to call ASAP 1-213-262-2986. This is a scam not only did he threaten me. He said if I didn't pay $ 1500.00 today he was going to process the papers to have an arrest warrant issued. I cracked up laughing and I pretended to be scared and gave him a fake name. He gave a fake chuckle and confirmed he found my record and he was going to issue the arrest warrant. I said good luck :)

I got scam today by an unknown number saying I got a warrant arrest from social security. I talk to a guy after pressing one. He has a very thick Indian accent. That should have been the first clue but because I was more interested in what warrant it was even though I was having second thoughts about giving my ssn to the guy. Of course I did give him my ssn. Which he told me I have illegal drugs and guns in Texas. Which I never been to Texas. That's when i realize I've been scam and now this dude has my ssn. I started asking why they didn't mail me a letter about it or call me to tell me about it. And why is it that I have to call them just to ask about it. He made up some story of them being busy. So i ask for his phone number, which took him 5 mins to give me. Then I ask for his address to get to him so I can met up with him. I wasn't surprised when he hung up. I was more upset with myself because I should have known. Social security never calls you and block there number and they never have a voice machine talk to you. And they never ask for your ssn just to verify you when they are the ones calling you.

I let all numbers I'm unfamiliar with go to voicemail as I suspect most of them are scams. The past 2 days I've gotten 2 calls from 800- numbers (texas) and they both left automated voicemails saying "kindly press one, press one to know about your legal case". Although I was nervous at first, I never pressed any numbers nor called the numbers back because i realized the likely hood of it being a real issue concerning legal prosecution is very slim because authorities will more likely contact you through mail or in person than over an automated voicemail. For backgrounds sake, I'm 16, and I'm concerned that if people my age or younger receive these calls, theyll be naive and comply, which can result in heavy losses. Me and my family are on the no-call list but as the calls are from scammers they cant exactly be stopped. The best thing to do is to not pick up, or if you must, never speak! Scammers record phone calls in search of key words such as: -yes -accept -will -comply etc, to piece together a false compliance on your part for their scam. And dont call back or press and numbers requested! This only verifies that your number is an available working one, and theyll only attack again. Just block the numbers!

7-10-19 I received a recorded call from 310-844-7544 (California) claiming to be from the SSA. They directed me to contact them at the listed number ASAP with my Attorney for fraudulent activities before I am arrested. When I called the number back to see if someone would answer, a foreigner answered and he also sounded like he was from India. I hung up and blocked the number - didn't bother to have a conversation.

Never do anything they ask you to do, such as press a number on your phone or return their call, etc. Best thing to do is -Simply hang up the phone.
