Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Someone called me today August 1st at 10:50 a.m. . They said I am Ben Walker from the Social Security Administration. His ID number was 1752. He said that my social security number was going to be suspended for fraudulent activity. Then he requested I give him my last four digits of my social. I refused and he hung up. The number that they called me from was 1-833-416-1017

Received from 404/549-6045, 2019/08/01 11:19ET, pleasant female voice, "Social Security enforcement action". I hung up immediately. SCAM! SS doesn't make enforcement calls. Separately, recording claims there is an action against me, yet they don't first ID the person answering. Blind call. If legit, they'd first determine who is on phone.

I am receiving calls stating that there has been suspicious activity re: my Social Security and benefits will be suspended and a lock on my account will be placed. I pressed 1 to be directed to someone, they asked when did I receive the call, I stated just now, I can hear it is a call center and the person I was speaking with had a heavy accent, she started to ask me for personal information, I requested the telephone number to their legal department as I can tell it is a call center from a foreign country. They hung up. The numbers they are using are 800.309.9216 and 800.793.3291 . I have the VM messages they left.

I received a phone call from 866-433-9813 in Texas but didn't answer the phone since I don't answer phone calls that are not in my contacts unless they send a reasonable voicemail then I call back. They left me a voicemail saying that "we have to suspend your social security number immediately. So if you need to talk to a social security officer before we suspend your social, press 1". I knew right away this was a scam and filed a complaint to the FTC website. I would be extremely cautious when answering these type of phone calls.

I received 4 calls within 3 hours on July 31, 2019. First from SPAIN 34 780 170 96, then followed by Adams Center, New York 315-284-2921, followed by New York City 347-801-7096 and then Cartersville, VA 804-207-8235. All I can do is block the caller, but as you can see they are coming from multiple sources. The only solution I see is if the government gets actively involved.

My elderly mother just received a call from 1.877.319.9222 claiming there was suspicious fraudulent activities linked to her social security number. When i asked what activities I was told "money laundering." When I told him this happened before and that she wasn't involved in no money laundering he said it would be taken care of. After I started to ask him to more questions along with his name he hung up the phone.

Got one of those calls too but it just left a phone number for you to call back on. They tried to tell hubby who is a deputy, that someone rented a car in his name and was busted for several kilos of cocaine way out in Texas and that they searched the address and several more kilos of coke was found. It’s amazing what these people will say. I wonder if the people that are making the calls are the ones getting the money or if they earn just a regular size salary...... I am so glad we aren’t that gullible. DONT FALL FOR IT!

A couple of things. The numbers will mostly vary, so it doesn’t matter where it comes from. It can be an 800 or 877 or a regular area code. Secondly, for those people that say “who would get caught into this scam”? It is often elderly people who are good at heart and their social security benefits are extremely important to them and front and center in their mind. And they might not really know how many horrible people are out there. They also don’t see notices on social media in the way younger people do, may not have anyone to ask. Someone said they posted this on Facebook, and that is a great idea. I got three calls in one day and knew that it was a scam, but I googled it to find out if there was a complaint process, which I will use, but just in case there is someone in my network who may get a call and out of fear or even curiosity, might get taken in.

Robotic voice. Scammer. Further steps need to be taken to protect the public from these scam calls, especially for those on the "do not call list" which appears to be a scam in and of itself due to the consistent scam calls (and texts now) that are going to numbers on this list.

This is obviously an issue that could be fixed by the government! I received at least 5 calls a day from those idiots. Looks like I'm not the only one. Just about everyone that I talked to have the dame issue. So dear Federal Trade Commission, I see that you soend some money with this consumer information website. Nice but we will prefer to see some result about this issue. I already missed a few doctors appointments because of it. On top of being annoying it is disturbing that you guys the FDC boss Mr Trump that suppose to understand business did not fix that yet. Please remind him that in business we expect result! Thank you

What to do when you get such a call: 1. One thing is swearing at them so that they don't call again (They might give your number to other spam agencies though) 2. What I did: Gave them a wrong name and wrong SSN. They would have tested my name & SSN on some website, which would have blocked them, limiting their ability to scam others. So sad that the people from my country (India) and Pakistan are doing this. Indian govt banned VOIP gateways in India but clearly, this is not enough.

I have a phone appointment with social security this afternoon. This morning I got a call from an unfamiliar number. I didn't answer. No message left.
