We’ve seen a new twist on the Social Security Administration (SSA) scam recently. Check out this SSA imposter robocall, which says your benefits will end. (That’s not true, by the way.)
If you get a call like this, do not press 1. Instead, just hang up and remember:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended.
  • The real Social Security Administration will never call to threaten your benefits.
  • The real SSA will never tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on a gift card.

The Social Security Administration scam is the number one scam reported to the FTC right now. People filed nearly 73,000 reports about Social Security imposters in the first six months of 2019, with reported losses of $17 million. (You can explore the data about imposter scams and losses at ftc.gov/exploredata.)

So if you’re getting these calls, you’re not alone. Tell your friends and neighbors about this scam. Tell them to hang up the phone. And then to report it to the Federal Trade Commission.

robovoice identifying self as representing the Social Security Administration - (803) 592-6871 (South Carolina) - advised "fraudulent activity" on my SS number. Key words and phrases used were "final warning"; "to avoid appearing in court" to answer charges. I believe the word "magistrate" may have been used. (Seriously?) Given call-back number and invited to press 1 to speak with an agent. Hung up, reported conversation to the real SSA and filed a FTC report on their advice.

11/05/2019 2 phone calls from 726 numbers. Computer voice tells me that I am in trouble with the SSA and criminal charges are pending. Then it tells me to press 1 to speak to an operator. I did not do that and hung up. I blocked the first number, but they changed the number on a second attempt.

These folks stopped calling me. They said they were from SSA. I then asked if they were calling from the Social Security Administration and if they were an employee of the Social Security Administration. When I got an affirmative response, I told the caller that he had committed 2 felonies and that I was going to report him and his whole operation was going to be shut down and he was going to be arrested. No more calls from those folks.

Just Received 2 calls the first was from 813-215-2321 telling me that the social security administration was investigating me, and that an investigator was waiting to speak with me. I hung up and immediately following, 813-215-5869 contacted me with a 3rd warning notification telling me my benefits would be suspended if I didnt contact them within 24 hours. This has to stop - how many elderly people do they have believing this, how many unknowing people do they have believing this. Messages need to be broadcast about this throughout the media and local tv which is the only way anyone is going to get the attention of the elderly because that's what they rely on to get their information. (Just a suggestion)

They keep calling under different numbers and using a new approach. Message says my identity was stolen in TX and I need to call to verify it's me and so they can report and fix my credit under 1-833-835-6862, 1-844-320-4445, 1-972-779-0427, 1-972-779-0429, 1-844-869-5851, 1-844-837-4293, 1-855-789-0209, 1-813-694-7580. There's another local number to me in 813 but I cannot distinguish now so I'd rather not report an number I'm not sure about. Another company is also robo-calling saying they will refund my subscription if I call them back. I am not answering if it says "Scam Likely" but I've been checking on Whitepages Reverse Lookup and some of these say "congratulations, you have entered a number we don't recognize" or something to that affect. Now, I am locked out of Whitepages... go figure! I am a Realtor and I can't afford not to pick up the phone. They must know this as I am getting 10-12 calls a day... where I used to get one (maybe) a month.

I received a call from 877-647-3929 and answered the robocall which transferred me to Dorthy Williams ID # 315920AC. She informed me that my social security number was being suspended for suspicious activity. She verified me with the last 4 # of my Soc. Sec. which I gave a bogus number, although she was able to match it up. She asked me if I had ever visited Taxes, which in her accent turned out to be Texas. She preceded to tell me my info was used to rent a car which was part of a drug/murder/money laundering scheme! When she asked if I was aware of any of this, I responded "You caught me, I did it." She then hung up on me.

I already forwarded a complaint yesterday regarding these robocalls with the prerecorded message claiming to be law enforcement regarding my SSN involved with suspicious activity. I received an additional 5 on top of the original 2 toll free numbers I provided: 866-071-6162, 800-619-7909, 800-260-7466, 866-896-4882 and 800-551-6383. I don't know if this will help track them, but I thought I should at least report it.

I got two calls, one from 303-351-5625 (Colorado) and one from (979) 481-5295 (Texas) - A message was left in two different robo voices saying my social security number will be suspended if I do not call back, ignoring this information would be considered an intentional attempt to avoid initial appearance before a magistrate judge for a federal criminal offense. I called the Texas one back and they asked me to verify my name and social security number - My reply "you called me, you tell me" They hung up on me.
