We know there’s been a flood of information and updates about the government’s economic impact payments, or so-called stimulus checks, lately. But quickly and safely moving massive amounts of money into the hands of those who need it is a big job with a lot of moving parts.

We also know that the more you know about the process, the less likely you’re going to be tripped up by calls, text messages, or emails from scammers trying to steal your money or personal information.

Here’s what you need to know about the stimulus payments and how to avoid scams related to these payments.

Who will get money?

Adult U.S. residents that meet established income limits are eligible to receive money from the government. This includes:

Taxpayers – people who filed a federal tax return for 2018 or 2019.

Retirees – people who get Social Security, Railroad, or other retirement benefits.

Beneficiaries – people who get public benefits like SSDI, disability, or veterans’ benefits.

Non-filers – people who do not have to file a federal tax return, including people who made no income or made less than $12,200 (or $24,400 for married couples).

If you get Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits, have a qualifying child, and didn’t file a return in 2018 or 2019, you have to take action by noon ET on Wednesday, April 22 to add the $500 per eligible child to your payment. See details from the IRS.

What to do

Most people don’t have to do anything to get their money because the IRS will use the same payment method – direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or paper check – used to send you your tax refund, Social Security, retirement, or other government benefits money. If the IRS doesn’t have your direct deposit information, you can go to the “Get My Payment” feature at irs.gov/coronavirus and let them know where to send your direct deposit.

If you don’t usually file a tax return, go to irs.gov/coronavirus to access the “Non-filer” portal and to figure out what, if anything, you have to do to claim your money.

To check on the status of your payment, you can now use the “Get My Payment” feature at irs.gov/coronavirus.

Avoiding Coronavirus stimulus payment scams

Scammers are using these stimulus payments to try to rip people off. They might try to get you to pay a fee to get your stimulus payment. Or they might try to convince you to give them your Social Security number, bank account, or government benefits debit card account number.

4 tips for avoiding a Coronavirus stimulus payment scam

  1. Only use irs.gov/coronavirus to submit information to the IRS – and never in response to a call, text, or email.
  2. The IRS won’t contact you by phone, email, text message, or social media with information about your stimulus payment, or to ask you for your Social Security number, bank account, or government benefits debit card account number. Anyone who does is a scammer phishing for your information.
  3. You don’t have to pay to get your stimulus money.
  4. The IRS won’t tell you to deposit your stimulus check then send them money back because they paid you more than they owed you. That’s a fake check scam.

I entered my information for the direct deposit my situation is slightly different than most peoples. I am currently unemployed but like everyone else I have also entered my information into the non-filers tool and done it in a timely fashion on 4/17/20. I have a message that is still posting on the get my payment tool that says my payment is scheduled to be deposited on April 30th. That was well over 2 weeks ago I'm just trying to find out if there is anyway to tell what is actually going on with the situation.

This FTC blog post explains what to do if you think an identity thief got your stimulus payment.

Report the stolen check and create an IRS affidavit at www.IdentityTheft.gov. Click "Get Started" on the first page. On the next page, click on the green bar that says " someone claimed an economic stimulus payment using my information."

Fill in what you know to create an identity theft report and IRS Identity Theft Affidavit. The system will create a list of steps for what you can do next.

The IRS says that you probably won't qualify for an Economic Impact Payment if you are claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return.

Look at Q2 Who is not eligible? on this page of the IRS website.

I'm Trying to get me stimulus check from the tax service I did my taxes at. The IRS says they sent my check to Independence Tax Service on May 1st and every time I call the tax place they say they can't get in the mail box because the manager is out of town. They said they don't know when she will arrive . I don't understand why they can't just get the mail man to get the mail out for them or the manager should just mail the key back so someone that works at the tax office can open the mail box . I really need the money for bills. What should I do?

I was falsely claimed.. i receive child support and classify that as my income.. also on housing assistance with housing authorities, and receive food stamps.. i filed with identity theft.gov , mailed in( that's pointless) filed on non filers and keep rejected. I need help NOW not next year. I don't usually file taxes.. I've been submitting and resubmitting for a month on the 15th . And if anything you probably sent $ to the person who falsely clsimed me. I'm not disabled and don't get SSI MY ONLY SOURCE OF INCOME IS CHILD SUPPORT AND I WAS FALSELY CLAIMED

This is the FTC. The FTC manages the IdentityTheft.gov site where you filed the affidavit to the IRS. The FTC does not send stimulus payments. Please follow up with the IRS about issues with your stimulus payment.

I have not received my payment, despite having filed 2018 and 2019 taxes and meeting the requirements. The "tool" is not offering any information about the status. What a ripoff! Now I have to remember to claim this on my taxes next year? What kind of accountability is that? I need the money now, like everyone else!

Not seeing much for replies on the things people are asking. I've been looking everywhere for answers and getting absolutely nowhere. After 2 failed attempts to directly deposit money into a old H&R Block account, the get my payment tool updated to show that my $1,700 stimulus payment was to be mailed on April 24th. Yesterday (May 12th) I recieved the letter confirming that my payment had been issued and was mailed to the same address. YET I HAVE NOT RECIEVED A CHECK AT ALL & There are NO instructions on how to report missing payments as irs has stated and has been repeated on every website talking about stimulus. It's obvious there is NOBODY to contact about a lost check to try and stop payment to maybe prevent someone else from cashing it. I have not been able to find any updates or answers to know if it has happened that anyone got the letter before they got their check? Or gotten any answers on what to do or who to contact to try & cancel the lost payment and possibly resend or give personal bank acct info since they had H&R Blocks on file. I would hate to think of this much NEEDED money winding up in the hands of someone with ill intentions or having to wait until next year when I file to finally be able to claim the payment... WILL SOMEBODY PLEASE ANSWER!! I dont want to go through the headache of filing identity theft claim when I'm not even sure if anyone else has claimed my payment. That's alot of hassle to find out it got mixed up or held up in route through the mail. Please HELP

I assisted my disabled brother in filing the non-filers information and adding his three children to his return, as well as his girlfriend/mother of children. (Two separate returns, one was him and the 3 kids, the other was for her alone). Everything was accepted for the both of their returns, and same bank account information entered for both. He collects survivors benefits/ssdi. This was processed April 19. Upon checking the WMP, it says both of their amounts would be deposited to their account on 4/30/20. Account numbers match and are correct. One deposit of $1200 was received, but the second amount of $2700 has never been deposited or received. Today is 5/13/20 and there has been no update to the WMP, he has received no letters, paper check or anything. There are no numbers to call to inquire if perhaps the IRS screwed something up along the way and it went to someone else's account (transposed the account info maybe?). According to the bank, there was never an additional payment pending or a rejected deposit. There is simply one single payment of $1200. Is there someone who can provide answers? As there is no way to get in contact with anyone, and meanwhile I'm sure someone has received his stimulus amount. Any help would be appreciated!!!

I have been waiting in my stimulus for weeks now. I normally don't file taxes and went through turbo tax and it's accepted the file. Then I got a direct deposit date and the deposit never came. Finally after 5 days the track my payment said I'm eligible for payment but need bank information. Only catch is under the FAQ on irs website there is a suggesting for non filers how to choose a option and place zero in other fields and put bank information in. But that error they said had been corrected has not. Now I have no idea when I will get my stimulus money.
