Scammers are calling people and using the names of two companies everyone knows, Apple and Amazon, to rip people off. Here’s what you need to know about these calls.

In one version of the scam, you get a call and a recorded message that says it’s Amazon. The message says there’s something wrong with your account. It could be a suspicious purchase, a lost package, or an order they can’t fulfill.

In another twist on the scam, you get a recorded message that says there’s been suspicious activity in your Apple iCloud account. In fact, they say your account may have been breached.

In both scenarios, the scammers say you can conveniently press 1 to speak with someone (how nice of them!). Or they give you a phone number to call. Don’t do either. It’s a scam. They’re trying to steal your personal information, like your account password or your credit card number.

If you get an unexpected call or message about a problem with any of your accounts, hang up.

  • Do not press 1 to speak with customer support
  • Do not call a phone number they gave you
  • Do not give out your personal information

If you think there may actually be a problem with one of your accounts, contact the company using a phone number or website you know is real.

Read our article to learn how to block unwanted calls on a mobile phone or on your home phone. And if you do get a call you think is a scam, report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

I am getting 20+ calls a day! Each from a different number that I block, but they keep switching. Is there any way to stop it altogether?

I got one this morning that went straight to voicemail. It said that there was a VISA charge to Amazon for $353.23 and if hadn’t made such a purchase to call an area code (323) Los Angeles number, even though the call was registered to Boise, Idaho. I checked my VISA records and no purchase exists.

In 3 1/2 hours, I've gotten 15 of these scam calls! It's driving me crazy! Blocking the number does no good, since they're all from different phone numbers. What can be done about this??

They rang me today to say that due to security breaches an amount was being deducted from my account and they had to set up a payment system so it wouldn’t go through. They make it sound so real but it’s very noisy in the background. Said they were ringing from Kolkata!

I got 6 calls from 6 different numbers that looked local the other day within 2-1/2 hours. Some left messages, the others did not. If it's local, it couldn't be Amazon calling. Why would I think it was? I don't have an Amazon account. What is their point of doing this?

This scam has spoofed and called me from 5 different numbers for their apple support scam in less than an hour. This is getting ridiculous and should be investigated and shut down. The phone number they want you to call but is not Apple support is 315-232-8257. SCAM.

I've received 10 calls in the last 2 hours from various spoofed numbers so I can't block them! They keep leaving a message stating my Icloud account has been breached. I don't even have an Icloud account. Press 1 to speak to a representative or call 315-232-8257. I wish there was a way to stop them!!!

I get several calls a day on my land line. It's always the Amazon recording but the scammers are using a rolling caller ID from legit businesses, local phone numbers and familiar cell numbers. I went ahead and answered one this morning, dialed 1 and got a foreign sounding person who hung up as soon as I asked them to remove my number. Yes, I knew they would, but somehow hoped I could stop the calls. Nope...the phone rang a few more times already. Ugh!

Why don't you people at the FTC put some of outrtax money to good use and do public service announcements on radio and TV using recordings of these scammers to alert people, and explain just what they are. That would reach millions of people and save taxpayers millions by being alerted to the scams.

I got at least a dozen of these calls this morning, hanging up and blocking the number after doing so. Finally, desperate to make it stop, I pressed "1" and waited to talk to someone. In a bizarre twist, when I told him that I did not own an Apple device, and just wanted the calls to stop, he requested that I tell him a story, any story, and that if I did, he would take my number off the call list. The poor guy must have been deathly bored. I did not oblige him with a story, but hoped that his day would improve. My phone rang just once more with Ophelia from Apple after that...so far.

They are calling saying they are from Amazon Security. They want you to download Any Desk on your computer via Google Chrome. Don’t know what happens after that. I am not stupid enough to do it. You can tell they are from India or that region. There is a lot of background noise as other people are doing the same scam. They are spoofing numbers so the number appears to be near you, same area code and prefix. So if you block that number, they use another. I got 6 phone calls in one day from them using different numbers

I've had 2 calls from these saying I made an order on my card for £1100 for an iPhone and to push 1 to speak to someone. I hung up and blocked the number. It's a scam as I've never ordered an iPhone on Amazon. Don't press one just hang up and block the number. Most recent number is 01866672467.

The call came from a local spoof number. I answered because I was expecting a call from a medical office. It was a recording from Amazon Prime asking me to verify $404.00 worth of merchandise charges, I hung up. I checked my account and it was OK. I immediately reported it to Amazon. They were thankful that I did. They said that they investigate and have previously caught people. I also reported it to the FTC. So start reporting to stop these thieves!!!

I get these calls all the time and many others. I stumped the amazon caller recently when he asked if I had been to Florida, Texas or Ohio lately. I said no. (I live in one of those states). He said how $499 had been charged to my acct and it is suspicious. I said that is fine. I authorized the person to make the purchase. The scammer didn't know what to say at first but then said " You allowed this?" I said sure and I will allow any other charges to go through so there is no need to call me back. He hung up. The thing is I am probably one of the few people who does not order anything online or have any amazon account. One really scary thing is how I googled my moms phone number and it will show up with her name, address and phone number on many websites. She died over 6 years ago and I had her phone disconnected and sold her home 3 months later so that info is wrong. I am slowly getting some of it removed along with info I find online with my phone number, address and name. I have been telling scammers that the person they want, they often ask for XXX, has changed their number and I got their old number and I am not them. I will ask who they are trying to reach and when they say XXX I say wrong number. We are not that person. Of course it hasn't stopped the calls but I am giving some of them doubt they are reaching XXX since they refuse to give a name who they are calling for when before they would always say XXX. Plus many times I have noticed my phone only rings 2-4 times before they hang up and when I answer the phone they hang up or disconnect the robocall message right away. I am sure they have comments next to my number. You would think they would just delete the numbers they get no where with. (yes, I know it is auto dialer calling).

I get these calls about twice a week when I decide to answer the phone. Received one yesterday that a purchase had been made to the amount of $1,000.00 and to call if I had not made this purchase. I received another today that a purchase of $300 had been made and charged to my card, don't respond if I made the purchase but if I had not to call the number they provided. I did neither, but I always review my cards whenever I get these calls.

I have just received a phishing call claiming to be from Amazon telling me that I have placed an order from my account for an expensive iphone and to press '1' to find out more about the nature of the order. The call was from the number 0203 289 7996. I deactivated the call without action and have reported the number to the fraud agency.

I have recently been getting Amazon calls where they tell me that an iPhone purchase of $700 has been made on my account and they wanted to make sure it's legit. How proactive of them. I block them but get different local numbers and Minneapolis calling 2-3 a day in the morning for the last month. Annoying.

Just got a call claiming to be from Amazon and that my account was hacked and that I simply MUST go to this other website....ZOIN.com or something. Hung up and called Amazon, and verified account was fine. Scammer was pushy and unprofessional and I should have known off the bat as Amazon folks are always professional. If you get a weird call. ...HANG UP and call the company back. Fingers crossed there are no issues. Why can't people get normal jobs like the rest of us.

It's almost getting to the point of harassment. They call every 30 minutes. They demand for some form of identification. I tell them I have no account, I won't give them any sort of information and they say someone charged over 700 something dollars. I've told them to stop calling. Then 30 minutes later they call like clock work. It's aggravating

I’ve had a few calls in the morning purporting to be Amazon saying there’s £396 in my account for a delivery and to press 1 is there is a problem. This last time I did press 1 to see what is was all about as soon as I heard a foreign voice I hung up. The called me back a couple of times after and I just cut the calls. The number they on was 07593606826.

I got a call, pressed 1, talked to the 'rep', told them I was at work and couldn't access my account there. Was asked if they could call back, said they could. I wasn't at work at all, so I checked my Amazon account, nothing was in my cart, so I checked the history. Again, nothing there but what I'd ordered 6 months ago. They called back and I told them this. The 'rep' was trying to explain why I couldn't see anything which I knew wasn't correct, and I told him as much. He kept trying to argue with me so I finally told him I was an IT tech and knew how things worked. He hung up on me. (By the way, I'm not an IT tech, but I'm not stupid either and know if something was ordered, it would show up on my account.)

i got a call just now from Amazon (Fake) 800-339-6835. Stating a 120 charge from Ohio. They instructed me to go to Anydesk.com and install the client. (I did NOT do this) . We got disconnected. However I heard a good 20 people in the background tell others to do the same thing. I truly feel for people that get scammed. My parents a couple of days ago was called from same people. And were able to get into his computer. They are elder and it scared them horribly

How do I stop the iCloud calls?? Since yesterday, I have received OVER 20 of these robo calls from what appears to be a local number to me. Just like everybody else, I got 18 calls and and the same computer generated messages in the last 5 hours. It's ridiculous. Every time they call I block that number. The next call is from a different number however the area code and first 3 digits of the number are the same and the message is always the same. It's a shame this can't be stopped.

I have received 31 calls in the last 6 hours and I am blocking the numbers as they call but a new number calls every 10-20 mins. Can't you shut this operation down? They leave the same recorded message with 315-232-8257 as the call back number
