Scammers are calling people and using the names of two companies everyone knows, Apple and Amazon, to rip people off. Here’s what you need to know about these calls.

In one version of the scam, you get a call and a recorded message that says it’s Amazon. The message says there’s something wrong with your account. It could be a suspicious purchase, a lost package, or an order they can’t fulfill.

In another twist on the scam, you get a recorded message that says there’s been suspicious activity in your Apple iCloud account. In fact, they say your account may have been breached.

In both scenarios, the scammers say you can conveniently press 1 to speak with someone (how nice of them!). Or they give you a phone number to call. Don’t do either. It’s a scam. They’re trying to steal your personal information, like your account password or your credit card number.

If you get an unexpected call or message about a problem with any of your accounts, hang up.

  • Do not press 1 to speak with customer support
  • Do not call a phone number they gave you
  • Do not give out your personal information

If you think there may actually be a problem with one of your accounts, contact the company using a phone number or website you know is real.

Read our article to learn how to block unwanted calls on a mobile phone or on your home phone. And if you do get a call you think is a scam, report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

I just got a call from 540-559-7213 saying I had a large purchase through Amazon Family for a I phone. I pressed one to speak to someone. She told me if I didn’t make this purchase hackers hit my IP address and made the purchase through my account. She said she was going to transfer me to security but first I need to go to this website. Join.zoho.com. By this time I knew something was fishy so I grabbed my other phone and googled this website. This website allows them access to your computer. Be very aware of these calls.

They are calling me every 10 minutes for the last 2 days. They are spoofing dozens of different numbers. I though this was illegal. What is being done to stop this. It is harassment at the very least.

Just received a call from "Amazon" about a purchase of $200+ on my account. If I made this purchase, just hang up and it will be sent to me. If I did not make this purchase , I can press 1 to talk to someone or call back at 470-668-4063 to dispute this. Do NOT do either one, just hang up.

I just received the Amazon purchase phone call of an iphone for $799.99 - they wanted to know the device I use to access Amazon - the recording is exactly like what is on here and when I pressed 1 it said that my call couldn't be handle at this time and hung up. Me being me I called back the number and it went right to someone and he tried this whole narrative so they could send me a link to cancel the pending charge. He said that it was being made from Dayton, Ohio using my credentials but could not tell me what card or anything the charge was made too. I finally hung up on him as I knew it was not legit. The number I was called from was 803-560-8380.

I received a slightly different message about a $9.00 charge on my Amazon account from Dayton. Before reading this, I called the number back; it just rang and rang with no answer. Now I’m really worried they’ve linked my account and accessed my information. Shouldn’t Amazon have some accountability to protect our private information. How do I know which Amazon site is the real one?

[Mechanical voice:] "If you recognize this charge, to cancel this gift card order, please call back Amazon support on the same number which is displayed on your phone's caller ID ..." I have 2 Amazon orders pending but not a gift card, so I checked here first. Glad I did.

I got two separate electronic phone messages regarding a suspicious charge on my Visa card to Amazon.com. In both cases they left a (different) phone number to call for Amazon support if I didn’t make the transaction. So far, no such transactions have shown up on my cc and I did not call either number back.

I got the Amazon call. I answered but then hung up. I called back the number. They answered Amazon, how may I help you. I was suspicious so I hung up, not saying anything......waited a few minutes then called again, still suspicious, no one answered, but they did.....I could hear background talking. So I hung up again. Other then verifying that the number they call was a "good" number....do I need to be worried about my information?

I'm getting one from Amazon saying a big amount was ordered on my account and if I didn't make or authorize it to press 1 to speak to a rep. Here's the thing, I can't block the number because it's from UNAVAILABLE!

EXACTLY! I've had scammers call using names and numbers of people I know on my caller ID! Had a scam call using my banker's home phone! He was very angry. Sent him a screenshot of my caller ID to prove it happened. Phone company has NO record of that number calling me out my phone receiving a call at that time. They use working numbers too of people's working numbers. People have called others using MY PHONE AS A SCAMMER! How do we block them from using ours and other people's personal working phone numbers?

I just got a call from “Amazon” saying that I had purchased vouchers and they were checking in because it seemed suspicious. I’ve also had the calls that said I purchased an iPhone and they wanted to verify the purchase. This time I pressed one even though I figured it was a scam. He wanted to know if I made the purchase, which I responded with no. I asked what info he would need from me and he said they were not allowed to ask for personal info and that I had to stop the charge on my end. He asked if I was near a computer and we don’t own one. He said I could do it off my phone and asked if I had an android or apple. I then asked if I could just check my Amazon account and see if it showed up to which he responded that they had already blocked my account. I then hung up... there is nothing suspicious on my Amazon account.
