Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

I've received a variation of this call multiple times a day for the last several days. They now are mimicking a Washington DC number. My calls have all come from these two numbers 1-800-714-3052 and 1-202-801-6491. They both have the same message. This is a call from the Department of Social Security Administration. The reason you have received this phone call from our department is to inform you that we just suspend your social security number because we found some suspicious activity. So if you want to know about this case just press one thank you .. It is an automated voice. Do these people ever give up?!

They called, I answered, they said my ssn was suspended. Curiously, I pressed 1 to be connected to someone. All he said was hi how can I help you. I don't think that's how someone from a government agency (or any real business) would answer the phone. I eventually hung up on him. I called the number back. Voice machine asked if anyone 50+ in home. Curiously, again, I press 1 and I am connected with a lady who promptly and professionally claims she is with a health center. I believe these people use other businesses' numbers to scam

I got a call saying United States but I noticed the number, ‭+1 (214) 237-1193‬ had a “+1” then a (1) that doesn’t show here when I copied it, then the area code! This double the “1l with a + first makes me think it’s from another country. The woman’s message was a robot voice. She claimed to be an “Officer” of the SS department. They noticed some “suspicious activity with my number in the South of Texas” Then told me to call the above number and “press 1ti speak to this officer” and then repeated it about pressing 1 to speak with her. No threats or solutions were made, but I’m thinking that if I followed the instructions, and got a live person, then they would start the scam and threats etc. If SS really wants to alert me to a “real” problem...they would send a letter for me to go down to SS office to deal with it in person in their actual office. So unless I hear otherwise, I’m not responding!

‭+1 (888) 922-6541‬ ‭+1 (800) 117-3692‬ ‭+1 (888) 186-5247‬ I have been getting a phone call from these numbers at least 8 times a day. All claiming that my ss# was involved in a suspicious activity and if I don’t press 1 to speak to a ss customer service I will have my SS doxxed and the next message says I got my social security benefits taken from me bcz I haven’t called them. And then the next message says I got my SS suspended and will no longer be able to use it. It’s scary for older folks who buy this trash scam calls.

Beware of the robot calls you will get fro. 850-738-1655 telling you to call 210-728-3901. They will ask you to identify yourself first (mistake if you do that confirms your phone # to you) and then will transfer the call attempting to get your SS#.
