Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

I just got the same SSA scam call. I decided to check it out so pressed 1. In a few seconds I was connected to a woman who asked me for my SSN and name (and later birth date). I provided some made-up information. She then went on to tell me that a car was rented "under my SSN" which was found near the southern TX border and had drugs. She asked me if I wanted to "settle" this thing urgently. I said yes. She told me to pick up the next call coming on my phone which will be from the DEA authorized person who can settle this case. By now I had had enough so I asked her if she couldn't find a better job than to scam people. She said "You think I am scamming you? You watch out! FBI will be at your door in 15 mins! Click." :-D

I just got the same call from a Mississippi, phone number. They left a message, I already knew it was a scam due to the fact I have had a few of these calls in the past. I called back got some guy with an accent, just like all the other times. He told me my SS number was going to be suspended and just like the last few times, I told them they can not suspend a SS number, and to lose my number and go to hell. Then I call back a few more times using a dif number and give them fake names cause they tell everyone the same thing whether or not they called you are not and I get them so mad until they hang up on me. I do that until I call and that number is no longer in service.

I never answer calls that I don’t recognize the number from. These calls showed up as “unknown”. My phone info on the calls indicated the numbers were 800-257-1300, and 800-724-9041. I received these two identical calls 37 minutes apart on Aug 26 2019. The following is the transcript my phone recorded of the robocalls: “Until further clearance in case you feel this is due to an error you may connect with legal ____ __ Social Security administration in order to connect with our Social Security administration officer press one now in case we did not hear from you your social will be blocked permanently to connect with the officer now press one and you will be automatically be connected with a concern department we did not receive any ________ or ________ in order to speak with Social Security ________ regarding your Social Security press one and this automated system ____ _____________ officials press one now to connect…” Quite obviously a false threat. I submitted a complaint with this information. I know it’s most likely one of many similar robocall scams out there, but hopefully this will help track them down.

Similar computerized voice message left 8.29.19 from 888-017-5132. "...suspend your SSN based on suspicious activity...to know more, press 1." I did not press one, I deleted the call off voice mail. Acquaintance living in same neighborhood received it 10 days ago; I wonder if they call certain regions/areas or just get off robocall functionality.

I too got this message on my voice mail I am really surprised in this day and age that people are still falling prey to these scammers! If we cant stop the scam calls we need to better educate the people the government should put up billboards and make commercials warning people to not ever give out your personal information on a call like these! Protect yourself cause no one else will!

Hi, I just wanted to report another SSA scam. I received a call from 18331908974 and it's another security scam saying that my SSN was being suspended and to call back and press 1 to speak with an officer or a warrant will be out for my arrest. I call the number back after researching it in Google just to see what will happen and the number was out of the US. Please put the number in Google before calling back any unknown numbers especially asking for personal contact info concerning your ID. My wife always puts any number she doesn't know in Google before calling or accepting the call. She let it go to the voicemail and we know any info or notifications coming from the bank, SSA, government , and or IRS will come through the mail first. Rule of thumb.

Calls from 1-888-567-9711 Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. When confronted their "professionalism" turns immediately to using profanity/offensive language.
