Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Just got a call from 1-833-960-9796 Didn’t answer so they left a voicemail: “This call is from the Department of Social Security administration the reason you have received this phone call from our department is to inform you that we just suspend your Social Security number because we found some suspicious activity so if you want to know about this case just press one thank you” So very similar and/or identical to some of these other comments but I didn’t see THIS number on the comments yet so I thought I’d post it.

8446554029 is the # that called me today to leave a message there has been fraudulent activity on my Social Security account and that I needed to press 1 if I wanted to hear about the case. If there were a problem, I know the initial contact I should have with the SSA would be in WRITING. This is a scam. It's a recorded loop.

I got a call today from 713-448-5101. I answered the call as I was expecting calls from recruiters and was hoping this to be one of those! But, it said that my social is suspended. Press 1 to talk to an officer. the person on the other end sounded very professional. Identified himself as David Forester, Batch # 417-9740. He made sure that I write down this information. He said that i have 25 bank accounts opened in my name and there are 10 million worth of transactions going on under my name. I have 7 arrest warrants for those. Now I need to verify which is my bank account and which is not mine ! If I disconnect, I will be charged for not cooperating. He was threatening on the phone. I disconnected....How did he know my name and address ! This is freaking me out

My life must be a joke. On top of a ton of crap going on I get this call and I very stupidly answer and comply with the lady on the phone. They now have my social and I am in total freak out mode. I just talked to a cop and he's going to initiate a report. I can not believe I fell for this.

I just got this same phone call but from 1-800-473-8749. Saying there’s suspicious activity on my social security card and to press one to talk to someone. It went to voicemail and I listened to the voicemail and was looking who to contact about this when I found this thread. So glad I read this instead of calling back. I was freaking out thinking someone had got my information when my wallet was stolen a few weeks back. So glad I did my research. Is there anyone I can contact about this scam?

I received a call today was printed to press 1 to speak with a rep from SSA administration. They asked for my first and last name and last 4 of San and zip code. I did not feel comfortable. They said they would call me back and I could google the number and it would show that it belongs to SSA. The called ID showed ‭+1 (866) 313-2533‬ which shows on google that it belongs to SSA. I still don’t feel comfortable after coming across this article and especially because the person sounded like they were overseas and had a strong Indian accent

I received a call today that my social security number had fraudulent activity and that I was wanted in Texas for drug trafficking and money washing. The person had all my information including address. He said that they were going to cancel my social security number and issue me another one. The number they called me from was 1-915-308-5455. He said his name was David Marcus and badge # was 742609. He transferred me to someone else named Alex Walker with badge # IRM795136. Call back number was 1-800-394-3827. He stated that they would call me for appointment to meet with some officers. I immediately reported it.

Received several calls from this #: 443 574 6256 in Maryland. The same text went to my mailbox: if you don't return this call immediately we will proceed with legal actions.... I used a different phone number to call their number and wound up with someone not speaking English well with an accent I believe is tied to India. Of course, he could not identify my number I called him from, so he asked what my name and SSN is - I simply hung up. Sure enough, I did NOT get a call back to the number I used to call him. Clearly, the same scam running ramped

I received a call ‭from 1 (808) 873-7164‬ with an automated voice identifying itself as the SSA saying my SS number has been suspended due to suspicious activity and I need to respond immediately by pressing 1 to speak to the SSA. I got 2 calls today from and number in NY 315 area code that I use to live in. I called the # back and the person very rude stated that I a rented car in NY City was found with blood in it and drugs and that the car had been rented in my name, this jerk had my home address and I live 1200 miles from NY and have for over 3 years. These guys are low lifes, and what makes me laugh is that when I told them to go ahead suspend my SS #, I own nothing, I have nothing, and that MY credit sucks to the point of Bankruptcy, he said "Oh, OK" have a nice day.

I receive these calls everyday, several times a day from various 800 numbers. I finally decided to press the button to go to their legal department. I went straight to an Indian call center. when I called the guy out for the scam, He proceeded to call me by my full name & began threatening me and my family with physical harm. I continue to get calls & block each number, but it's obvious that this will never stop & there isn't anything being done to shut these people down.

Just do not give them anything -they immediately ask your name and date of birth so they can "look you up in their system" . Then they want your SS number. As a rule, NEVER give out your SS number to anyone who calls you.
