Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

1-888-744-8546 just called me and said they were suspending my SSC# for suspicious activity unless I talked to an SSC officer and When I asked for his Name and Number I had to call him back ... he wanted to know what as the emergency and when he did not hear the reason good enough he was so angry and I said to give me the number and name and he swore at me before hanging the phone up on me.... I have been getting calls for this type a scam daily.

This is still happening....Received multiple calls this week from these #: 800-695-5523 & 800-070-9401. Robocaller said due to suspicious activity on my SS it is being suspended and the only way to fix it is to speak with a SS Officer. instructed to Press 1 for a SS Officer (I did it, knowing this was a scam) - I pressed 1 and a live person said: "Social Security - how can I help you" and I said - You can stop calling me because what you are doing is illegal and I am reporting you to the SS fraud hotline" and all i heard was "click" on the other end....I guess I was right! NO GOVT/Bank office will call you and ask for your personal info and it is my understanding there is NO such thing as having your SS# suspended!!! Don't fall for this & don't ever give out your information unless you made the call and know exactly who you are speaking to!!!!!!

I received a call regarding this same recording from two different numbers that had an area code from California - 209-093-1078 and 209-221-9422. I knew it was a scam , but was still curious so i pressed one. After they answered, I said "hello, thanks for calling you. You are on a recorded line". The male on the other end started yelling sexually explicit remarks. So, do not press one - obviously confirmed as a scam.

I just received a call from 1-800-626-1525. The same scam. So, I let the scammer get on the phone. He had an accent that sounded like he was from overseas, and I heard hundreds of people in the background. Definitely a boiler-room! Then called him a couple of vulgar choice names and he hung up. I am going to report the number to the FBI website next. Jerks!

Got a call from "Social Services" saying my social # had been used in a fraudulent manner in southern TX. I should press 1 to talk to someone. I pressed 1 and got to a man with a foreign accent on the line introducing him as Officer Eric. I sounded as if I was terrified this had happened to me and asked what was going on. He said my name had been misused. I then asked "What is my name?" Then he hung up. Called from 949-395-3506 Laguna Beach, CA according to my call log. I tried calling back. No one answered of course.

I got a voicemail on my cell from 877-729-1610 but the message was cut off stating that they was going so suspend something and that I should call back. I called from my job phone and a lady with an Indian accent picked up saying "Thank you for calling Social Security". I hung up because I know Social Security's number and I know they have an automated number. You're always on hold for at least 10 minutes before speaking to someone. SMH
