Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Social security scams often results in identity theft that is a serious threat. I, personally have faced this situation where I've faced these calls on the name of SSA. They have threaten me by saying my card is going to block if i don't provide my card number. One must report in nearest social security office or local police station for this issue.

My wife just received a scam call and was smart enough to pass it over to me. English isn't her native language, but she recognized that it was a potential scam. We cannot rely on the government to somehow find the scammers who succeed in cheating people out of their money and recovering their lost funds. While I certainly feel badly for their loss, these scams are not new and government agencies do what they can to increase awareness. Ultimately, we are responsible for educating ourselves about cybersecurity and social engineering, such as these scams. Losing money is a hard way to learn the lesson. Pass the word on, educate your neighbors and your colleagues. NEVER give your SSN, or your Bank Account Information, including your credit card numbers to anyone over the phone. Protect your information folks.

So I pressed 1.... Some Indian guy in a very loud place asked for my name. I said no, I need to know why I'm getting a call about my ss being "blocked" . he said " yeah I think that someone they want to steal the money from you" I said from what money???? He said "from your social security paycheck. Can I have your name. Spell it. And social so I can find you in the system." I said no I'll come there, which office am I calling? He paused for a long time and said no I can do it from here.. I said no give me your name and title, direct number and just I'll tell them at whichever office I go to that you were helping me...... I have gotten FOUR calls today from a female recorded voice. "She" says the SSA has suspended my social security number, and that there is a warrant out for my arrest. "She" then instructs me to press 1 to speak to an officer. DO NOT FALL FOR THIS SCAM. When I hang up, they just call me again later. When I press 1, the call hangs up. When I call them back, there is no one there. Just dead air. And I cannot block calls on this phone! It's not possible to suspend a social security number. That's not a consequence that exists. And the Social Security Administration is not going to call you and tell you that you're under arrest. And sometimes, the scammer will spoof the real SSA phone number, so don't fall for that, either. I wish they'd stop calling me!!!!

Student loan default
September 24, 2019
Anyone have student loan debt in default? I just 3 back to back calls with a voicemail saying my number had been suspended due to suspicious activity. I have some suspicions of my own on who these ppl might be getting our numbers. I wonder if anyone has the same problem as me but my private student loans are in default and the lender sold it to national collegiate student loan trust. Ever since then I have been getting scam calls like this and more. I have this feeling that they might be selling our information to random ppl. Anyone else have such an experience.

ALl week i have been receiving calls from a 1-800-765-6495 . I decided to answer the call just and as expected it was a call about an issue with my social security number. I pressed '1' just to see how far they would take the scam. Before they said anything i asked for the person's name and badge number. He told me Mark Johnson and badge # FD9161. When i asked for a call back number in case he call got disconnected he gave me my own cell number!!!!... I politely told him that i worked for an agency who is fully aware of the recent volume of scams and would be reporting this call to the right parties. He cursed me out and hang up the phone.
