Looking to start a new relationship? For some, that may mean meeting a new love interest online. Word to the wise: sometimes it’s best to lead with your head and not your heart.

Millions of Americans use dating sites, social networking sites, and chat rooms to meet people. And many forge successful relationships. But scammers also use these sites to meet potential victims. They create fake profiles to build online relationships, and eventually convince people to send money in the name of love.

The Federal Trade Commission receives thousands of reports each year about romance scammers who create fake online relationships only to steal their victims’ money.

Unfortunately, an online love interest who asks for money is almost certainly a scam artist.

The FTC’s new infographic, developed with the American Bankers Association Foundation, lists common signs of online dating scams and what to do if someone you meet online asks you for money.

Below are some tips to identify a real romance versus a scammer cruising for a target.

Online Dating Scams. Has an online love interest asked you for money? That's a scam. Scammers know millions of people use online dating sites. They are there, too, hiding behind fake profiles. Signs of a scam: Professes love quickly. Claims to be from the U.S., but is overseas for business or military service. Asks for money, and lures you off the dating site. Claims to need money — for emergencies, hospital bills, or travel. Plans to visit, but can’t because of an emergency. $220 million lost in 2016. $56 million lost in 2012. Reports to the FBI tripled over 5 years (4,476 reports in 2012; 14,546 reports in 2016) What to do: Slow down — and talk to someone you trust. Don’t let a scammer rush you. Never wire money, put money on a gift or cash reload card, or send cash to an online love interest. You won’t get it back. Contact your bank right away if you think you’ve sent money to a scammer. Report your experience to: • The online dating site • Federal Trade Commission: ftc.gov/complaint • Federal Bureau of Investigation: ic3.gov. Learn more at ftc.gov/imposters and aba.com/engagement

Please share this information with others. Victims may be embarrassed to talk about their experiences, but you can help. A simple phone call, email or text, saying “Look what I just found” and sharing this information may make a difference in someone else’s life.

Hi! A man messaged me via twitter Oct 25, 2020. We went on with our conversations via whatsapp. He says he’s from the US, is separated from his wife and has a daughter who’s staying with her teacher. He’s a marine engineer and is in a ship right now somewhere in Italy. After about a month into our chatting (Nov.21), he informed me that he actually applied for a new job in our country and that the contract has been signed by the person concerned but he needs at least 400USD (converted to our currency) for the contract to be processed and he really wants to keep the contract. Wanting to help, I didn’t think twice and sent the amount to a name he gave me. The name is supposed to be someone who’s really from our country. He told me that the company he’s working for at present in Italy has been having financial problems since the pandemic started and what kept him holding on was the promise that by the end of this year, they would be given their salaries and he could finally leave. 3 days after I "paid" for his contract (Nov. 24), he presented another problem and this time, it concerns his daughter. Told me the last time he sent her money was on Sept and he promised to send her 600 USD for food and other stuff. Being a mom myself, my heart went out to the poor girl so I told him that I can send money but only 300 USD. Then he gave me the name of a man who’s supposedly living in another state. I asked him who’s the man and why is he in another state and not the same address with his daughter. His answer was that the man is the husband of her daughter’s teacher and that he’s working in that state, thus the address. After sending 300 USD, the daughter supposedly sent me an email thanking me and that she’s happy that she finally has someone whom she can call mom. Told me that her birthday is on Dec. 7 and she’s expecting a gift. I wasn’t sure though if the email really came from the daughter. On Dec. 6, the man got another problem. Said he promised to send money to his daughter for her birthday celebration ‘cause she wanted to have it in the orphanage and give something to the kids there. That he doesn’t want to disappoint her daughter. I even argued with him that her daughter would understand if she won’t be able to celebrate this year but he was insistent. The kind that makes you look bad if you don’t give in to his wishes. He even mentioned that they were promised their salaries on Dec. 15 so long story short, I sent the daughter 200 USD through that same person. Then after a week (Dec 13), he got another problem again. Said he needs at least 250 USD for his sustenance while in the ship. After a long argument, I finally sent 250 USD for his supposed sustenance. What I noticed was that he becomes extra sweet before asking for money and when the money has been sent already, he’s less sweeter haha! I thought that would be the last but I was wrong. Just yesterday (Dec. 21), he informed me that her daughter is confined in a hospital in one of the hospitals in the US and he needs at least 400 USD for hospital payments. I don’t believe him anymore. I’m tired of him asking me for money. What should I do?

This sounds just like the guy my mother is talking to. He's going by ths name Mark Edeh. He's asked her for 6,600, then 3,500. Told her to borrow from family, sell her car, home. Wants her credit score, bank info. He uses pictures taken off another person's website. Says he is stuck on a ship in the Persian Gulf, he's from Germany, has a daughter Pamela in boarding school in the UK. That he's a widower. Owns a 5 bedroom home in Chicago and many cars. His bank account is blocked and he needs my mother to send him money to reactivate it so he can hire a private jet to leave where he is. When she told him she hasn't any way to get that much money, he has suggested and insisted she buy Amazon cards for him to pay his bank with. But he also told her to give him her bank info so he can transfer money to her, then she can send it to him. And she's falling for it and trying to come up with it. Help if you can possibly give me advice on how to get rid of this person before he takes what little she has. She can't even afford food or her rent but he doesn't care.

I met someone from ScrabbleGo. I wonder if it's the same guy with a different scenario. I met this guy through ScrabbleGo. We just started chatting last week through WhatsApp. He's supposed to be a doctor who's lived in LA since age 7, and now in a Third World Country due to the Pandemic. He said his daughter is in a boarding school, and wife died 5 years ago giving birth to their second child. He wants me to send him iTunes voucher with instructions on how to send it to him. I haven't sent him anything, cause I had a feeling he's a scammer. I always ask him to send me selfies when we're texting, and he keeps sending me theses handsome pictures. I finally asked to talk or video chat instead of texting, he said it's not allowed where he's at. I told him I had my doubts that I'm being scammed, so he called, we spoke for a few minutes, and we got disconnected. For somebody who grew up in LA, this guy had a very heavy accent. I insisted on a video chat. He agreed, and on the screen is the handsome guy on the photos moving his lips so fast, and all he said to me was Hi, how are you?, and got cut off. I'm convinced that he is not the guy on the photos. These scammers have every way of doing things on computers, including that video call, just to lure us. I also told him to buy his iTunes card since he's a doctor. Don't fall for it.

Unfortunately, an occupation such as: anything to do with oil industry, especially works on an oil rig, military stationed overseas, dr working overseas... are scammers favourites. I'm guessing they use these because there's a lot of money in those & they think it will attract women & because they're overseas, they say they can't video chat. They do that because they steal photos off of other profiles & websites (in uniform, scrubs...). They don't want to video chat because you would immediately know they are not who they depicted I avoid any profiles that list any of those occupations & if they lost anything that could be connected such as engineer, contractor... I ask if they work on an oil rig. They usually say yes because they think it's a good thing. I block immediately.

Meet this Man on Facebook last year and he asked me to download this app called hangout,so I did. I never heard of this app before meeting him. He said he was a widow of 5yrs and has a 16yr old daughter that lives with him in North Carolina. He said he was a SP Contractor and was ready for retirement after his last Contract he has in Germany. Before he claims he went to Germany he said he was robbed by what he called thugs and they took his wallet and credit and bank cards . But he went to Germany and claim he had know time to take care of his bank information before he left because his helicopter arrived that his company sent for him. He said he was $7000 short to pay for his crane because all he had was $9000 and $35000 from his bmw car he used as a collateral loan. I lost my Son in January and had other family emergency situation and still insist that I help him out with the $7000 because he was getting his retirement check from 17yrs. Of work. Every week he was always asking for me to purchase a Google play card and he would pay the money back. I did help him out a couple of times and then things just wasn't adding up. I asked why we only talk on this hang out app and not video call.then he started sending me pictures of his supposed house of his but you can tell it was homes he got of Internet. And constantly asking for monetary gifts. So He then said someone hacked his Facebook account, and I looked him up on Facebook, there he was with 4 different Facebook accounts with each one have his place of residence in all the places he claims he been. He told me he was the only child and he was alone all his life when parents and his uncle that brought him from Portuguese.there was just to many red flags. The Name he goes by is Anthony Maras with a daughter Named Evelyn.
