Please visit Coronavirus stimulus payment scams: What you need to know for the most recent information.

As the Coronavirus takes a growing toll on people’s pocketbooks, there are reports that the government will soon be sending money by check or direct deposit to each of us. The details are still being worked out, but there are a few really important things to know, no matter what this looks like.

1. The government will not ask you to pay anything up front to get this money. No fees. No charges. No nothing.

2. The government will not call to ask for your Social Security number, bank account, or credit card number. Anyone who does is a scammer.

3. These reports of checks aren’t yet a reality. Anyone who tells you they can get you the money now is a scammer.

Look, normally we’d wait to know what the payment plan looks like before we put out a message like this. But these aren’t normal times. And we predict that the scammers are gearing up to take advantage of this.

So, remember: no matter what this payment winds up being, only scammers will ask you to pay to get it. If you spot one of these scams, please tell the Federal Trade Commission: www.ftc.gov/complaint. We’re doing our best to stop these scammers in their tracks, and your report will help.

The Social Security scammers are back. I received a voicemail the other day advising me my Social Security number is linked to fraudulent activity. I knew right away this was a scam.

Thank you for this information; it is comforting to know the federal government is caring enough to reach out. It is also very reassuring that help may be on the way for Americans.

I think this warning is wonderful, but it should be delivered on the news in multiple time slots so that it reaches the most people (especially those who don't have internet or don't read newspapers, etc.) If I didn't work for a school district whose IT department is responsible enough to pass the message on, I wouldn't know about this at all. Keep up the good effort!

Thank you for being ahead of the curve. They will be out there, the scammers, trying to screw who ever they can. Everyone be careful and don't believe anything someone tells you until you check it out yourselves!

Yes, very well said. Jennifer Leach was perfect in letting the general public know what's going on regarding this current issue. No "fat" just a good truth. A human being. Thanks for the update!

I hope someone is taking into account the fact that if this money is to be considered income by social services, many poor American families will be in worse shape than they were before receiving it when they lose their Medicaid, SNAP, heating assistance etc. at a time when it’s needed the most. $1,000 extra dollars is most definitely enough to cause many people to lose their benefits.

I agree entirely with those who commented how nice it is to receive messages that are obviously written by an empathetic human being . I'll add that I really, really like the posts to this website which keep me up on the continually morphing scamming attacks. Keep it up.

This is one of the few government sites that actually do what they were designed to do. The information is always timely and the subject's are consumer focused. I've used this site over a couple of administrations and I'm happy to say that the goals of the agency appear to have remained consistent. Keep up the good work.
