You might have heard from the news or your school that online learning platform Canvas’ parent company Instructure was hacked, potentially putting students’ personal information at risk.

When a hack is in the news, scammers can quickly follow. They often send text or emails pretending to be from a company or organization that’s involved to trick you into giving them your information. If you get an unexpected message, don’t click on any links or call any phone numbers in the message. If you think a message you get about the Canvas hack could be real, contact the company or your school using a phone number, website, or email address you know is real — not the contact info in the message. As the situation continues to unfold, you also don’t have to wait to take steps to protect yourself or your child from identity theft. Find out what you can do now at IdentityTheft.gov/databreach. If your information hasn’t been misused, there’s no need to file an identity theft report yet.
