Image of cupid and heartNot everyone using online dating sites is looking for love. Scammers create fake online profiles using photos of other people — even stolen pictures of real military personnel. They profess their love quickly. And they tug at your heartstrings with made-up stories about how they need money — for emergencies, hospital bills, or travel. Why all of the tricks? They’re looking to steal your money.

As if all that isn’t bad enough, romance scammers are now involving their victims in online bank fraud. Here’s how it works: The scammers set up dating profiles to meet potential victims. After they form a “relationship,” they come up with reasons to ask their love interest to set up a new bank account. The scammers transfer stolen money into the new account, and then tell their victims to wire the money out of the country. Victims think they’re just helping out their soulmate, never realizing they’re aiding and abetting a crime.

Here are some warning signs that an online love interest might be a fake. They ask you to:

  • chat off of the dating site immediately, using personal email, text, or phone
  • wire money using Western Union or Money Gram
  • set up a new bank account

Did you know you can do an image search of your love interest’s photo in your favorite search engine? If you do an image search and the person’s photo appears under several different names, you’re probably dealing with a scammer. And if the person’s online profile disappears a few days after they meet you, that’s another tip-off.

Here’s the real deal: Don’t send money to someone you met online — for any reason. If your online sweetheart asks for money, you can expect it’s a scam.

Unfortunately, online dating scams are all too common. There may be tens of thousands of victims, and only a small fraction report it to the FTC. If this happens to you, please report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Hello! I was almost scammed. He contacted me on Instagram. I gave him my phone number so we could chat on WhatsApp. He or she said many romantic things, things that I needed to be true. I gave him my phone account information, he bought 3 iPhones, leaving me with the debt, thank God I opened my eyes and stopped everything but I want to know if those people can use the information they have about me, phone account, chat, to hurt me online. How can I know if they have done something?

Ok, I sent my comment about what happened to me and then read some of yours. Here what I think, first, it's not about the name, it's about the story they tell, the words they use, they're all the same. They're many fake accounts on Instagram which was my case and I want to know how to identify them. I have 3 different men saying they love me and want to share their life with me, etc. Two asked me hangout and once WhatsApp. Now, after I opened my eyes I noticed that they repeat the phrases, they don't really follow the conversation, their English is bad, they don't send you IDs, they pressure you to send them the money for the emergency they told you, nothing else is more important, they delete the conversations, what I don't know if they download them. As they delete the conversations they forget what they have told you, so be perfectly aware of what they write. In my case were 2 guys working in a drilling ring, I am familiar with that and they didn't even noticed it, that should have been my first clue, I ignored it. I hope this text help you

I met a guy two week ago and he does fall in love with me within a week. He said he come from Carlifornia. I know he is a love scammer and I decided to play with him. He asked for my phone number but I didn't give to him. I lie to him and he does believe it and didn't ask for my phone number again. We confirm our relationship just in one week time. But two weeks after, I request for video call and he does do a video call to me. I saw his face and the face is same as his photo. We seldom chat maybe once a day if compare to others love scammer. I do tell him I am 21 years old and does not have any savings. Maybe he needs my personal detail after all . He is a patience scammer. So, should I continue to chat with him ?

One man has been begging me to send money thru direct deposit into customs in NC to release a pkg. They want $8,500 and they want my bank to send cash and the receipt as proof of the transaction. He has been begging me for several months to do this and I refuse to even exercise the thought. The customs office even told me what the pkg. contains. I have never met this person in person and he tells me daily he wants to marry me. I don't buy it. The customs office is using Chase bank in NY as their account. The customs company is Logistics.

Sanjeev Singh ... age 43 ... birthday July 22 Met him on Shaadi.com. stated he was Indian but born and brought up in Belgium! Smooth talker, sent songs and professed love too quickly! I asked him many times “are you real” but had a smooth laughing manner that slowly found its way into my lonely heart! I tried testing him with several faults of mine that I fabricated about myself but he seemed to not mind anything! He said he was Indian but not in touch with his roots snd wanted me to take him back to his roots! Always said the right thing! Love songs , pics of himself with his 13 year old son and mom and nephew from his late deceased sister who were all living with him in Las Vegas while he was working as a pharmacist in Kabul Afghanistan with Doctors Without Borders and always projected thst he had a lot of money! He sent me pics and was he good looking! Oh boy! Beautiful tall and beautiful straight teeth showing in all pics! And he had moved from Belgium to forget his divorce and most girls he met were heavy into drinking and clubbing and then his mom suggested to him that he try an Indian website! Never asked for money but one day asked me to open a BANK ACCOUNT so his company could transfer money there for when he needed when he came to see me. Wanted to travel the world with me especially to Australia and Canada! When I refused to open the bank account as I said I was not comfortable he said I was already like his wife and I had a right to keep his money! But I persisted snd said no! Next morning he texted me to ask how was I doing and after I replied his WhatsApp account just froze to “last seen” of that that date ie “June 2 219” we used to chat on WhatsApp 2-3 times a day and tslk on WhatsApp calling too every day! Then now hasn’t come online since June 2, 2019. Doesn’t read text or answer call and when called from landline bell kept ringing and message said that the “text mail service number not answering! Please leave a message!” I didn’t leave anyone but I think I escaped a big scam! Initially I was very hurt but now reading and researching online ... I think I escaped s huge scam! So thankful! Oh and he believed a lot in god and had converted to Christianity and didn’t know anything about Indian gods! His sons name he said was James Singh! His mother Sunita Singh! Nephew Ken (Kenneth). Father had passed away and that parents were originally from a Punjab! He had a PhD in pharmaceutical engineering!

Has anyone here encountered a man with the name Thomas Henry — allegedly Fromm brazil but moved to California at age 5, with a young son (John) back ‘home’ in California? He’s allegedly deployed with the US army over in sudan. He sent my friend an obviously fake UN document, stating he’s not allowed to use Webcam or any video chat for security reasons — it has many spelling mistakes and referenced an incorrect army act. Was defensive when questioned, referenced his security and job security. I’m worried for my friend, so I’m trying to find any proof that he’s a fraud — even though it’s obvious..

This sounds like my Thomas that I have been talking to for the last few months. He promised me to move to LA with him and his son once he's out of Sudan. Then when it came time to fly to LA, his flight was cancelled by his commander. The he asked me to open a bank account for him to buy his own flight home. I said no and he got mad. The next day he kept yelling at me on whatsapp and telegram that I wouldn't help get him home and that I didn't love him. So I sent him $500 on a prepaid card to fly him here. We used to talk to him everyday and I haven't heard from him since I refused to send more money. I think it was a scam since I havent heard from him again.

They usually write the same things to everybody, that's how I knew I was being scammed. Copy something he wrote, a poem and search it online, you'll find it has been used before. If you have pictures, do a reverse image search to see if you can find something.

Scam or no scam? The person asked to set up a bank account to transfer money for him to use when he visited me... and I refused! The next day still texted me to ask how I was doing and then has not showed online since past 10 days! When doing a reverse search nothing comes up with his pics! So am not sure if it’s a fraud there or not? Was very charming! Insisted on compromising pics but never got mad every time I refused! Never a bad moment but the disappearing act on WhatsApp after asking me money! But no pic online too after doing a reverse image search either! And none on Facebook or other social media site! Please anyone respond is it scam or not!

Yes, it is a scam! They use pictures from other people, fake names, and same words. They don't have any social media. You could copy something he texted you and search online because they use the same "poems" and convince yourself it's a scam. If someone cares for you never will ask you money or money related.

His name he used: Aubrey Graham, from Maryland but working on a off shore rig in Glasgow, Scottland. Vacation office by the name of George Scott. After a short time ask if I would move to Whatsup site to chat. As the rest of you have said he fell in love quickly wanted to marry me. He had to finish up contract first, but if I would pay his flight from rig to land he could come visit. I was to send the VO the money bu MO to a Chase bank. Then he ask for me to pay for his replacement Engineer of over $10,000. When I refused he got mad. Before that he was calling me his eternal wife, queen, dearie and many other sweet names. When I did not do that he ask how come I would not support my man..that I was selfish. Then ask me to send him $500. In itunes, no I did not. He use to send love songs, pictures, wedding rings and text I was his and only his. This went on from 1-2019 till last week. He does not contact me anymore, NO MONEY, or CARDS, oh yes he wanted me to buy and send him a new iphone xs-10 that cost $1,500. He did not want me to tell my kids or friends about him, but I did and he got mad. Ladies be ware he is a smooth talker, very handsome. Pretty gray short hair, blue eyes, pretty teeth. Yes he sent about 5 pictures and said that's all he had. X-wife on drugs got divorced, one daughter 18, half brother lives in Germany. Lost everything when he went through divorce.
