If you took out an online payday loan from a company affiliated with AMG Services, you may be getting a check in the mail from the FTC. The $505 million the FTC is returning to consumers makes this the largest refund program the agency has ever administered.

The FTC sued AMG and Scott A. Tucker for deceptive payday lending. When consumers took out loans, AMG said they would charge a one-time finance fee. Instead, AMG made multiple illegal withdrawals from peoples’ bank accounts and charged hidden fees. As a result, people paid far more for the loans than they had agreed to.

In 2016 the FTC won a court case against AMG and Scott Tucker. Then in 2017, a jury convicted Tucker and his attorney of crimes related to the lending scheme. The FTC and Department of Justice are using money obtained in both court actions to give refunds to consumers.

Here are answers to questions about AMG refunds.

Who will get a refund? Checks are being sent to consumers who took out loans between January 2008 and January 2013 from these AMG-related companies: 500FastCash, Advantage Cash Services, Ameriloan, OneClickCash, Star Cash Processing, UnitedCashLoans, and USFastCash.

How many people will get refunds? More than 1.1 million people will get refunds.

How does the FTC know who to send the checks to? The FTC and a refund administrator have used AMG’s business records to identify eligible consumers and calculate their refunds.

I’m eligible for a refund. What do I need to do? If you borrowed from one of the lenders listed above between January 2008 and January 2013, you don’t need to do anything. The checks are being mailed to eligible consumers automatically. There is no application process. If you borrowed from one of those lenders before January 2008, please call 1-866-730-8147.

How can I get more information? Visit the FTC’s AMG refund page or call 1-866-730-8147.

Three tips from the FTC:

  1. If you get a check, deposit or cash it within 60 days.
  2. The FTC never asks people to pay money or give information to cash refund checks. If someone asks you to pay to get a refund from the FTC, it’s a scam.
  3. The FTC has advice if you’re thinking about a payday loan or an online payday loan.

Yes, you can make a mobile deposit. Those instructions are for the agent and bank that get the check.

I received mine today. A little over $500. I was excited to have gotten this today. Will be cashing tomorrow. But my letter says partial refund. Does anybody elses letter say partial refund? Oh and for all those who wonder if this is legit...it is!!! All those wondering about you moving multiple times...they will find you as long as your ID /DL is up to date with current address. But again...does anybodies letter state"partial refund"?

That confused me too but after reading through all of these comments, I understand now that "partial refund" means that you are being refunded a portion of the overages you paid in fees. There will NOT be another check coming to you. The FTC has distributed all the fund collected from this lawsuit and distributed everything. I'm so grateful for this refund!!

My husband and I had multiple payday loans in 2013. It was an awful cycle we were stuck in that I am ashamed of. Will we be getting multiple checks for multiple loans? I received a check, will my husband also? He had separate loans.

The FTC tried to combine information about accounts so it could send one check to each person. But sometimes it wasn't clear whether information was about one person or two people. When information was not clear, we did not combine it. For example, we did not combine accounts that had a maiden name and a married name, or accounts that had one name but two addresses. When we saw that, we sent separate checks.

I am still confused about the person who said they received more than one check. The FTC (Rust accounting) told me that they only send one check. Bridget Small (FTC) can you respond to that? Can someone receive more than one check?

You might get one check or you might get more than one check. The number of checks you get is connected to the name, address and account information the FTC found about you.

I received one for over $700. Such a blessing, as we never recovered from the years of 2012 and 2013 when we stuck ourselves in a payday loan cycle. Taking our loans to cover fees from existing loans...I was wondering if I would be getting other checks from other loans of if my husband would also be getting a settlement check, since we both took out loans at that time.

Did you get 2 checks because you used 2 of their payday loan companies? I got 1 but I'm curious if it was combined and I used 3 of the companies listed.

I received a check today drawn on US Bank, says FTC v AMG Services with an explanation letter attached. Does this seem accurate? I'm excited! Totally unexpected but well deserved since the payday loan people were totally robbing us blind. I've moved since receiving a payday loan and received check at my current address.

That’s What I’d like to find out if the check is legit and if anybody has actually cashed it or deposit I should say. I never want to be scammed I don’t owing a bank this type of money regardless how little or small the dollar amount is. Some banks can’t tell if it’s a real check or not but once you deposit it and it’s not legit check you will be responsible for paying these funds back.

That's what I'm wondering. I've found articles from CBS, & NBC News, where they have answered the "are checks from FTC legit?" and the reports all came back to say that yes they are legitimate. But , Im still curious. I deposited one of the checks (by mobile app) last night , and if it clears it will be available on the 10th. My husband received a smaller amount, so we were going to try and cash it somewhere. There aren't any local US Banks near us.

It does look generic. It doesn't have the watermark on the back, which the check states that it will have. And I don't see the VOID stamp or microprinting anywhere on it. I went to this government website and decided it was real so I mobile deposited it Monday... and it bounced. Now I'm -$500.23. I am so pissed at myself and will now have to spend my day making phone calls.

If you have trouble cashing or depositing the check, please call the company the FTC hired to manage the refund process. That is Rust Consulting, at 1-866-730-8147. Rust Consulting will tell you how to verify that the check is legitimate.

I received a check today for over 1300.00! Thank you FTC and Justice Department! It’s nice to know the American consumer has someone looking out for our welfare. I should never have taken out a payday loan to begin with but this company (and others) took advantage of us and operated their business illegally.
