Were you charged for Amazon Prime without your permission?

Online shopping can be convenient and easy. But with sometimes lots of screens before you get to check-out, you could wind up signed up for a service without even knowing it. What’s worse, it can be tough to cancel. Read on to learn how to protect yourself from unwanted services and charges.

Today, the FTC filed a lawsuit against Amazon, saying the company violated the law by enrolling people in its Amazon Prime subscription service without their permission, continuing to charge them, and making it hard to cancel.

The FTC says the company used a series of hurdles — known as “dark patterns” — to make it hard for customers to understand that they were starting a Prime subscription. These dark patterns also made it hard for people to cancel their Prime subscriptions by making them hunt for the right place to cancel online, and then click through complicated extra pages to cancel. Often, consumers would call Amazon’s customer service, only to be referred back to the website to cancel, making the process even more frustrating.

To help avoid unwanted services and charges when you shop online:

  • Watch what goes into your shopping cart. Even if you empty your cart and leave the site without completing your purchase, you still could have been enrolled in a subscription service.
  • Watch for pre-checked boxes. They may sign you up for a product or service.
  • Carefully review your order before completing a transaction. If something got added that you don’t want, make sure to remove it.
  • Make sure you didn’t get charged for something you don’t want. Check your order confirmation to see. If you did, contact the company to cancel and get a refund. Make sure you get — and keep — the written confirmation.
  • Watch your bank or credit card statements. If you’re in a subscription, you’ve tried to cancel, and the company won’t stop charging your account, dispute it with your credit or debit card issuer.
  • Look for auto-renewals. Unless you cancel, you’ll continue to be charged.

If a company signed you up for a subscription service without your permission, or if you have problems with canceling a subscription service, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Charging me $1…
August 03, 2023

I contacted amazon because I noticed for 4 months I was getting charged $14.99 for amazon Prime. I checked my account and I have the yearly subscription so I had no reason to be charged monthly. I called and spoke to an agent who asked me to give them the transaction ID on my bank statement. They were able to trace the charges to an account that is not mine. They said they could give me a refund but they could not remove my card from the account. I said "how can you not remove my card from the account when it's being used fraudulently?" and they said they do not have access to do that. So I have to call my bank and cancel my card. Same exact thing is happening to my husband. I have no idea how this happened but it's ridiculous. They're well aware it's happening but "cannot do anything about it"!

I swear I have cancelled my prime membership several times to always find out I’m still being charged. Finally just removed all credit cards from Amazon after canceling again. This time was refunded the last charge. Assuming it was for the next month. Someone please investigate them for this!!!

Today I got a notification while I was at work congratulating me on my prime membership. (I never signed up and they took 14.99 out of my account) I called them and they said it was prime video ( I don't have prime video). Thus is the 2nd time in a month thus has happened. They said they will give me a full refund.

I received a bill from them for 1781.03..FRAUD. This is the third or fourth time they have done this. I have NEVER charged this amount at any time. I need to know why this continues to happen with them.

You need to look into Amazon's Boomerang. They sent an email about a price increase for a product I never signed up for. I checked my Prime credit card and no mention of 'Boomerang' at all. I checked Amazon Retail orders and found I had been charged for 5 years. Never an email or invoice about the product during that time and re-looking at my credit card statements, there was a charge for Prime Video. Didn't really question those since we do rent movies from time to time on Amazon Prime Video. But we've never used Boomerang, and still not even sure what it is.

This is familiar to me here in the UK. I have just discovered that I was enrolled into Amazon Prime as far back as September 2019! At no point was I aware that I had subscriber to a free trial and then agreed to auto renew. What I see as a scam has only just come to light because an odd amount of £8.99 that made no sense at all was on my Amex statement. Trying to get to the bottom of how I was signed up is sheer murder. All they say is that I signed up for a free trial and agreed to auto renew. This would be totally out of character. Even if I had signed up for a free trial, anyone who knows me would know that I would make a note of the date of expiry. To date I have had a little money back but they say their systems cannot cope with going right back to 2019!

Last night I spent 1.5 hrs on my phone cancelling Amazon Prime for the 3rd time in approx 4 years.

Not only were they billing Prime service to Synchrony Bank (the issuer of my Amazon Store Card which was paid through a monthly automatic patment), I discovered they have been charging me $15.09 every month since Jan 2023,(possibly longer), billed without my consent to my Associated Bank account.

Amazon Prime agreed to refund $90 of the charges, but will return it to the Amazon credit card, NOT to my Associated Bank card from where it was removed.
I am 65 years old with health issues, and this has been terribly stressful and is not yet over.

I was charged without consent, and no prior knowledge for Amazon prime. No bill, no email, and no text was sent out. Even though Amazon sends text for all Amazon packages, its arriva, its dates, its delays, and its time by email and text. I was embezzled out of $142 without prior knowledge and their should have been atleast a bill sent to my customer email. I have filed a FTC investigation and updated 2 times. I have chatted with customer service representatives from Amazon countless times. Have screenshot every conversation with them knowing I was doing it, was tossed around from one agent to another and Amazon has dropped the ball. This is bad, more than Bad! Oh and I have been a customer of Amazon since its inception just FYI. This company has really

Recently had the same issue. I canceled Prime last year - Prime mysteriously added back to my account this week with unknown credit cards and orders added…I haven’t purchased anything from them at all this year. Contacting their customer service to resolve and to make a complaint was the worst experience.

Amazon prime members have prime video service included in their subscription.
In the past few months Amazon has removed prime access to almost every title offered. Making almost everything cost money to view or worse, come with ads that interrupt viewing.
Prime membership subscribers, no longer have new releases, box office hits and many other categories included in the paid for services.
What we are now left with, is a very, disturbingly, large number of horror films, violent, evil imagery and story lines; coupled with every D rated, low budget screenplay, ever made.
Prime video has also sent most of its films to the Freevee and SHOP categories. To ensure even more spending requirements. Freevee movies are filled with ads, which are then used to pull more money from subscribers by offering the movie at a rental rate or purchase rate.
Movies that have been included as free with prime membership, for years; are now a money making gimmick. There is no longer a free to me category and most stuff has been contracted away to "paid subscription services" such as paramount, showtime HBO Max etc... All because those companies threw a fit about how they were going to lose business if Amazon didn't make them partners.
We are forced into paying Amazon, then purchasing one of those subscriptions, which then sets new charges for viewing.
Amazon pays for these things at set purchase price. We then pay Amazon membership fees which are used by Amazon to do those ownership rights purchases. Just because showtime doesn't want to earn its own dues, doesn't mean we should be forced into a huge monopoly scheme by the companies.
When it comes to purchases of movies or shows, including the right to actually own and view the purchase at will indefinitely; Amazon has gone even further in removing our rights. Purchases will become no longer available, show error codes, or just outright disappear.
What's really wrong with all of these issues, is that they are the exact things Amazon has been told to stop doing.
I hope the FTC understands that, my comment is a current issue one.
What I've stated is the outcome of how Amazon has chosen to fullfil it's duties as ordered by the federal government.
It's made things worse for consumers. And more profitable for them and their big corporate buddies.

I am currently being charged $16.41 monthly for an Amazon Prime subscription and I have never ordered the subscription or anything from Amazon. I am trying to locate their Customer Service number to cancel the subscription but have had no success. Does anyone have the Amazon Prime Subscription Customer Service number?

I use Amazon a great deal for shopping, I subscribe to Prime, I was informed that this includes Prime Video and Amazon Music.
I have just received a renewal request for Amazon Music Unlimited. I never knowingly signed up for this service.
Getting in touch to get a refund is proving difficult it I have the time so I will not give up
This is a shameful and deliberate practice to add to the mega billions Amazon have already amassed. Disgusting

I was charged for annual prime membership twice in two months. They are not giving a legible response as the amazon pay does not show any transaction for the same. The bank linked shows a successful payment to the merchant, Amazon has failed to respond in an appropriate manner. They just snowballed my call from one assistant to another and after 11 mins the call was ended from their end.

AMAZON started billing my card for Prime, unknown how I was duped into the sign up. I caught it after 4 mos on charge card. After "Chatting' I was told a 4 month refund would be credited. That did not happen. Chatted again, then only 2 mos were credited after told 4 mos would be. I CHATTED again & was told two more months would be credited in a few days. Now, two weeks later still no refund. ARE THEY KIDDING ME?

So I have 2 accounts, one that we (my family) setup as the prime account that would be charged and our "personal" accounts would not be charged. I had it setup as a family account which at the time allowed 2 members to be linked (my personal and my wife's). It was setup to charge my amazon credit card, until recently I never noticed it charging me for years. I asked amazon to support with getting a credit to the account, being that there would be no benefit to having 2 prime accounts. They would not support at all.

Somehow, Amazon changed my account from a year’s subscription to a monthly which cost more money. They also switched from charging my credit card to charging my debt card (two different cards with different numbers). After contacting to canceled the subscription the charges continued. I had to call again to get the cancellation. I placed two orders on Amazon and paid the delivery fee for one and the second was to have free delivery (watch out for that one), the charges started up again. I am calling again to cancel. I will not be ordering from Amazon any longer. I’m tired of the deception practices of this company.

Yes, I too was a victim of amazon automatically signing me up for amazon prime since March of 2023. I just so happen to check my account on today (8/30) and saw the charge and looked back through my account and saw that they have been taking out 16.23 since March. I called them and they said they could only refund me 3 of the payments. I will be disputing with my bank tomorrow. This is so not right. I did remove my bank and card info from the site and will be keeping a close eye out for next month.

Have been shopping at Amazon I'm disabled much easier less painful to stay at home and order from my phone although they do a lot of false advertising can't tell you how many times I was excited about getting something but did not get at all what it looked like or what the details said had to return it they do a lot of that also one day they said thank you for being a prime member I thought that meant thank you for being a good customer which I was so I said thank you back we're saying that and then I checked with the FTC and what was going on with Amazon and I found out I had been scammed the same way everybody else had The only difference is is I like the free delivery and I like prime TV even though I'm entitled to ACP discounts on cable and internet I can't get anything less than $85 for one TV only so I had to go back to Amazon and I was kept being told that I am eligible for the discount but nobody would tell me why or how to do that I got a sweet Asian girl she told me do I have EBT card I said yes she goes put that in the same way you would have credit card and then go to a counseling login so she can make the proper change from 1699 a month down to $6.99 a month so when the time comes for them to pay me back I had been charged $16.99 a month and I should not have been so I still want the charges from that all the way up until hopefully the end of this month when it should change down to 699 a month before the 25th I'm going to call back and talk to a council login again and make sure that they do have it right it's only supposed to be $6.99 otherwise they just take it take it take it out of your card which is put in there for you to buy Amazon products That's what they do check into their false advertising you won't miss it there's no chance especially if it comes from China That's why I do not get anything no matter how badly I want it if it comes from China you will not get anything what you want or it will fall apart I guarantee you

Yes, they closed a business account so that I couldn't log in, but continued charging me for an HBO max subscription which had been in the "free trial" phase during cancellation. In 2015 I purchased what I thought was a "Page" from Amazon Prime for 250.00, from which I was lead to believe I could sell my own products. After they received my money and I was finally able to access my "page". It turned out to be an Affiliate program. I had already built several websites and was very careful to read what I was purchasing. Why would I pay 250.00 to promote someone else's product. All communication was cut off except for the ability to continue paying the fee to keep the page open. 250.00 down the drain! Probably a separate lawsuit. Maybe it was a good program if you could get on with someone like Macy's, but it wasn't what they were selling
