Were you charged for Amazon Prime without your permission?

Online shopping can be convenient and easy. But with sometimes lots of screens before you get to check-out, you could wind up signed up for a service without even knowing it. What’s worse, it can be tough to cancel. Read on to learn how to protect yourself from unwanted services and charges.

Today, the FTC filed a lawsuit against Amazon, saying the company violated the law by enrolling people in its Amazon Prime subscription service without their permission, continuing to charge them, and making it hard to cancel.

The FTC says the company used a series of hurdles — known as “dark patterns” — to make it hard for customers to understand that they were starting a Prime subscription. These dark patterns also made it hard for people to cancel their Prime subscriptions by making them hunt for the right place to cancel online, and then click through complicated extra pages to cancel. Often, consumers would call Amazon’s customer service, only to be referred back to the website to cancel, making the process even more frustrating.

To help avoid unwanted services and charges when you shop online:

  • Watch what goes into your shopping cart. Even if you empty your cart and leave the site without completing your purchase, you still could have been enrolled in a subscription service.
  • Watch for pre-checked boxes. They may sign you up for a product or service.
  • Carefully review your order before completing a transaction. If something got added that you don’t want, make sure to remove it.
  • Make sure you didn’t get charged for something you don’t want. Check your order confirmation to see. If you did, contact the company to cancel and get a refund. Make sure you get — and keep — the written confirmation.
  • Watch your bank or credit card statements. If you’re in a subscription, you’ve tried to cancel, and the company won’t stop charging your account, dispute it with your credit or debit card issuer.
  • Look for auto-renewals. Unless you cancel, you’ll continue to be charged.

If a company signed you up for a subscription service without your permission, or if you have problems with canceling a subscription service, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Happened to me.

I have been getting charged every month for over a year for what I thought that was why prime membership which is fine, however, I got charged an annual subscription a week ago on another credit card. I called them and told them to cancel the monthly membership and asked why I was being charged twice (one monthly and one annually) and they literally hung up on me.

I called back again and the individual couldn't find that account and then get this, hung up on me again!!!

I was charged after successfully canceling an order. Amazon customer service gave me all sorts of responses that were inaccurate. My money is gone with no receipt save my bank statement. Dark patterns of customer service on this issue. I keep getting told it is an "authorization hold" it is not.

They processed this on two different occasions. I didn't even know that this was coming out of my checking account until I was about to pay my light bill and didn't have enough in my checking account. When they processed it a second time I stopped ordering from Amazon they tried to make me believe I signed up when I know I didn't. I had my Bank reverse the charges both times. I'm on a fixed income why would I sign up for something I don't have the money for!!!!!

I recently discovered years of unauthorized charges to my Amazon Credit Card, and it was for HBO, Showtime and Starz where the description just said "Video".
Five in the household so we thought it was one of them, but it turns out that the billing may have started after we simply hit the LG TV icon from those content providers. No authorization, login, etc.
Amazon apologized and credited me only $290 when they overcharged me by $1500 over 3+ years. Yeah, my bad for not catching it quicker, but its salt in the wounds to only credit recent charges. I'm still contesting but any advice would be appreciated.

I had to change my bank account to cancel mine. I was being charged for over a year for a subscription that I had no access to. I tried several times to cancel and they said if I couldn't verify the account they could not cancel it. I had no idea how to verify something I didn't even know existed.

My beef with Amazon is that their search engine will not let me narrow down my search to only the searched terms. They also put first things not searched for. This makes it hard to shop for Carnosine, for instance.(This search comes up with Carnitine which I did not ask for!)

Also, even though they put unit prices on things, it is impossible to search for cost+Shipping lowest per unit first!

The point of this search is to make it possible to find something for a greater quantity that comes out less per unit. ( I have repeatedly, when calling them for any other reason, Asked Amazon employees to let management know that i need Total cost per unit (shipping included) lowest first.)

I presume that they do this to keep me coming back sooner.

Finally, I ask for large font (Ctrl+) not to break their web page due to my need to be able to shop without vision aid prosthetics. (This need encompasses the entire Web Economy!) I use seven or eight Ctrl+'s and the page becomes visible but un-usable! There are many Americans with much worse vision than I have. Please, Get everyone (Including .gov) to make web pages work optimally with many ctrl+'s because this is a very reasonable adaptation to limited vision.

Amazon seems to be driving customers away from lowest cost per unit (Including Shipping).

I need to be able to do a straight search at all. Amazon corrupts my search using the same dark means as they prevent customers from leaving their subscription. If i want best price I have to go to eBay or google. Amazon wastes my time when trying to get things by lowest cost per unit! I Really DO NOT Comprehend this because being able to get what I want would make Prime So Much MORE Valuable! The cost of selling their lowest priced per unit items would be made up for in more orders placed per unit time spent on the app! Efficiency generates wealth!

Amazon intentionally makes their search for bargains lower cost items inefficient which IS NO BARGAIN AT ALL!
This disadvantages their low cost vendors and the consumers of these vendors!

They also ADD THINGS NOT SEARCHED FOR to mess things up even more! IT is REALLY ANNOYING!

Please Stop them in this practice! Stopping this bad practice will even make them more money by making shopping more efficient increasing the number of things I have time to buy!
Hurting everyone makes no sense!

I have been enrolled in Amazon Prime twice within the last 2 years without my permission or request. When I noticed my Credit card charges not matching up with my actual orders I started checking on it. When I called to get a refund from Amazon since I did not authorize the Prime account enrollment I was told she couldn't refund my account because I did not HAVE an account with them. After over an hour with the first agent I called back and started over. This went on for 2 weeks, I was repeated told that I either didn't have an account or that I had multiple accounts and they did not show that I was a Prime member. I offerred to send copies of my billing or emails and they still did nothing. I would like to be added to the Class Action suit please.

Amazon had a checkbox that you checked to have them send an email to you when it was almost time to renew, so you could cancel your account. This being Amazon, of course I never got the email and they renewed me anyway. I finally got my money back, but it caused a big hassle with Chase, my credit card company.

You should not only go after Amazon for charging for Prime without permission. You should go after them for boosting the seller ratings of really bad sellers by claiming all the 1 star reviews were due to a "fulfillment problem", and for allowing so many sellers to make ridiculously false claims.

I was charged approximately $12. for 6 months for Amazon prime. I canceled but was still charged. I eventually had to get another bank card so they could not keep taking my money

Claire
July 12, 2023

I have racked up a $145 bill for a completely UNUSED Amazon Prime account. I was not aware I had a 2nd Amazon account or that it had a Prime subscription. When I found out, I immediately canceled and brushed it off as a silly mistake. But then, 6 MONTHS later, I am still getting charged monthly and routinely "ending my membership." I finally was able to figure out how to actually cancel my subscription.

HOWEVER, during this process, I was shocked to find how shady and deceptive Amazon's tactics are! Looking back at my bill history, a story unfolded; I started a free amazon prime subscription, set a calendar notification to cancel so I would not be charged, placed two orders that month, and was able to get a Student Prime account on a different Amazon account, so when I got my notification to cancel I opened my account and hit "END MEMBERSHIP" it took me to a page saying I only had a few days left to use the account so I logged out and didn't think about or use the account again for the next three months!!! SO I never should have been charged for Prime in the first place!!!!! Right?

WRONG! After realizing I was being billed an extra $16 a month from Amazon, I again logged on and hit end membership and was taken to a page that made it appear that I had ended my account and would not be charged for it next month this was not the case and became a reoccurring monthly pattern despite not ever using the account to buy anything throughout my continued subscription!?!?! 9 months paying for and unused service is something I simply cannot afford especially after I began paying for my student prime account and was being collectively charged $20 monthly! Besides last month, there is no way to get a refund for the money practically stolen from my account.

I am a busy full-time student and employee, so I am not immune to careless mistakes. However, this is NOT an instance of that, I truly feel I was deceived through manipulative text and hidden information and was wrongfully charged for an unused account. I am BEYOND frustrated, I feel people in my situation should be refunded for completely unused services, at least there should be a way for consumers to reach out to Amazon about these EXPENSIVE problems.

I hope justice is served!

My sister made a return on an item, she used her gift card to buy it. At the end of the return, I was refunded $14 with the $2 remaining for my gift card balance. I checked into my Amazon account to find out that they took out $9.99 to pay for amazon prime subscription without my knowledge or consent. Not a single bit of that gift card was properly spent well at all. It was $25, out of everything only $4 remained when it was meant to be $16.

Was charged however was able to cancel it online / customer service. However bigger question is why Amazon is charging customers without any active subscription/auto-renewal (without customers knowledge) and not informing customers in advance (2-3 weeks before charging) to give customers time to authorize or cancel. Further amazon is not sending any emails after charging the credit card. Every physical item gets an order email and shipping email, why is Amazon hiding these digital content related charges from customers. Further Amazon is not clearly providing records how the charge was initiated (was it because user had enrolled in free and it got auto renewed, or user explicitly requested the service if so which channel online/Alexa etc. OR is it Amazon on its whim deciding to charge as per their new policy... they provide no records to customers how the charge was triggered).

Two mornings I have waking up to Amazon charges on my bank account. One for $1.08 on 07/10/2023 and another for $16.41 on 07/20/2023. I have cancelled my bank card as I can not get a human at Amazon to correct the issue. I also have photo's of my Amazon sign in showing I do not have any memberships for Amazon Prime nor Amazon Prime Video. At least we know now how they make so much money. I pretty sure a lot of people don't catch that $1.08 amount or worry too much about it. But $1.08 times thousands of customers add up. Thank You for filling against them.

Amazon made a prime member without my permission twice in the past year. In 2022 they used my BofA VISA. BofA didn't care I couldn't fight both amazon and the bank-so much for 40 years of good credit. A few months ago they used a Synchrony account for my prime membership . I don't own a Synchrony card but they want money and they won't give up. I turn 75 next month and doubt I'll live long enough to clear my credit history so I just try not to worry about it.
In between these 2 frauds amazon accepted many fraudulent purchases on my Wells Fargo VISA. I received dozens of parcels (no return address and no invoice). I returned all of them. Amazon wouldn't say who purchased the merchandise and I only found out when I got my VISA bill. Wells Fargo was very helpful but I believe Amazon only credited that account because I had demanded to return all the clothing I hadn't bought and didn't want. Crazy, eh?

Amazon automatically enrolled me in a prime account and charged me every month until I finally found the withdrawal from my bank account every month and I called them and demanded that they remove me from the account and they would not do it. I had to cancel my ATM Card at my bank and then contacted the other legitimate accounts and it cost me some late fees because it was right at the end of the month. And time passed for about 3 to 4 months and I noticed that they had gotten my new information and changed my account passed dew amount to bring it current and had too do the same thing allover again . Now I have been blocked from Amazon and I will not buy anything from them ever again!

Amazon took $15.13 out of my account with my authorization. I was able to get a hold of my bank where I was giving a transactions ID # I provided the number to Amazon they telling me they can’t find the charge but my bank made it very clear that the $15.13 was for Amazon Prime and not a product purchase. Which makes no since cause my Amazon prime is paid up for July and the amount is $7.05. As of today I canceled my Amazon Prime subscription. I went online to my bank and I see where Amazon has been trying to debt the $15.13 from my bank account for months now but it was declined. Sounds like a Scam on Amazon side..

I canceled my debit card in response to these predatory tactics in June of 2023. Yet, they somehow were able to charge a new debit card that I had yet to activate in July of 2023. This is absurd and wrong. Please fix this and set a precedent against such un-ethical behavior in the future. It's really easy to exploit working people when you're paid 100k+ a year to sit around thinking of ways to take advantage of them. Ole Jeff himself admits that common civilians are weak and lazy...and it shows in his company culture.

I, too, have been charged $14.99/month in addition to the annual fee I pay. When I checked my "amazon prime membership" transaction history, I see that I've had this double charging on the 6th of each month since 2019! (I've been a member since 2017) I can't find a phone number to call to report this.
