FTC says CarShield didn’t cover car repairs as advertised

I get mail ads almost weekly from them, including today's! Never fell for their scheme though. They just waste postage on me.

A REAL misleading "scam"!...with misleading "spoke persons".

I have CarShield on my truck and my wife's car, what can I do to cancel and try to get my money back.

I paid $109 for eleven months. When I asked for a repair Car Shield refused
They never explained why they refused. I canceled the service but they never returned the money.

I believe most of these warranties are like this.Never can one trust a celebrirty endorsed commercial.

Car Shield sends me on an average one solicitation a month telling me my warranty has expired & I'd better get car shield for protection. I have a 1993 Mercury Grand Marquis with 47000 original miles on it. Engine wise, it hasn't even been broken in until 100000 miles. I throw them all away. I suggest everyone else do the same. I have replaced the white-walled tires that were 10 years old & the battery that was also 10 years old. I am the third owner. The first took very good care of her but second not so good. But other than above fixes I have only had oil changes & had to fix driver side window motor & never put other windows down. (not sure they would go up) I feel very safe in it. God Bless & just say no to the above car shield.

If it sounds too good to be true it probably is.
You get what you pay for and pay for what you get.

I'm sick of greedy companies that feed on citizens that are just trying to save a little. Car repair is expensive. A lot of people can't afford to keep their cars up & running. Something has eventually give when consumers can't trust.

Kinda figured that out, never bought into it, but was always taught "If it sounds too good to be true, then it must be a lie"

Thank you for this information! I have Car Shield and have not used their services yet. I just spoke to a Car Shield Rep. about 10 minutes ago and she assured me that the company has worked with the FTC and have and are continuing to update their policies and coverage information. My personal mechanic does not like Car Shield, for the same reasons listed above in your report. Since I will conduct my own research, please keep me informed of any recent updates re: Car Shield.

Odd, I was just talking to a co-worker about another company in this sector, Ox Car Care, with which she had allegedly signed, and that purportedly engages in similar tactics.

It seems that consumers would be better off estimating anticipated annual repair costs (acknowledging that this is extremely difficult and the unexpected can indeed happen at any time) and escrowing this amout in a money market or other fund under consumer control. Perhaps a logical starting point would be to ascertain how much these companies charge per year and amortize the cost over one year. For example, if OX charges $2,400.00 for its coverage, save $200.00 a month in an account that you, and you alone, control.

What these hucksters do to unsuspecting, hard working honest consumers on a daily basis is criminal Kudos to the FTC for its efforts on their behalf.

I suspected CarShield was advertising more than it would deliver. Those adds also reduce my respect for those in their adds.

I have been a customer of car shield since 2016. My BMW has been to checkered flag several times and car shield did not cover any of my repairs causing me to go in debt to get my car back. I would like some compensation from this company. I need to know how can I get back most of the money I've had to spend out of pocket because car shield did not hold up to its word.

They charge at least a hundred dollars a month. another thing, How long do you have to pay, before they pay?

We also get many letters from Texas telling us our warranty will end and want to sell an extended warranty. Our Ford dealer says it was not from them. So how do they get this info?

I am a consumer and had purchased a membership a few years from Car Shield to cover expenses for emergency car repairs. My transmission went out in my van and Car Shield would not cover any expenses. How would I be able to be compensated for almost $4000-5000 I paid out of pocket? Please let me know asap

The main issue with CarShield is that for months and months it would run tons of commercials during national network shows (like General Hospital and The Talk) so it gave people the sense that they were legit. I never thought Ice T or Vivica A. Fox actually used it and good thing those ads are now banned.

I paid over one year on coverage for my car went to the local car dealership for a recall item and carshield won't cover the work because my car was a rebuilt auto, but at the time of signing up for the coverage they only if the car had a lean holder on the title. I owned the car free and clear. Carshield wanted more money to cover the car, but won't say that it would over any repairs at that time. At that time I paid over $1200.00 for nothing!!!!!

I had Car Shield for 2-3 years. I was payingb$105.00,monthly. Before pandemic I needed car repairs for my engine to fix my car mounting up to 1000.00. I placed a claim and they said that CarShield didn'tcover that. The mechanics that normally fix my said that Car shield never pays. The mechanics refused to deal with them. So, l paid for the repairs, and continued to pay my monthly bill. Several months ago l.had trouble with my car again .lt was piston problem. I had to take it to another mechanic, because my mechanic refused to deal with them. The other mechanic agreed to fix my car. CarShield sent their mechanic to assess the repairs needed to fix my car. CarShield declined the claim and refused to have my car repaired
I immediately dropped my coverage with them. I had to go my purchase another car. They strategically send their reps to find ways not to fund the repairs needed. They are deceptive a bunch crooks. And they got those Stars lying for them promoting deceptive practices.

We had & paid this service for a few months......when we needed work done on our car, NO CAR COMPANY in our GA area including Buick would accept this company for payment.....We were told that they DO NOT PAY!!!! So our premium payments was money just "GIVEN AWAY" and we have no way to get it back!!!

As a repair shop owner the majority of these “warranties” are terrible to deal with. We stopped accepting a lot of them. Most times we spend over an hour on hold waiting to talk to someone to start a case. When you do finally talk to someone they deny most repairs or they supply a used part that is just as bad as the broken one. I do believe the FTC needs to investigate these companies. Instead of buying one of these contracts take the $120 a month you pay for the contract and put it in a savings account. In 12 months it will have $1,440 in it. You will be able to cover most car repairs with out one of these companies causing issues for you and the repair shop.

I have had Car Shield since 21 and my car.
Is not working and I took it to see what problems it had and they said it was not covered they offered me not enough to get if fixed I have paid them 4 8 Hundred dollars I am talking to better business Bbb trying to get my money back I have no ride my car is saiding

It's not just Car Shield it's most warranty companies. Endurance does the same thing.

Thats terrible and those celebrities should look into their exceptions before taking car shield money to endorse them.

I had the same problem no mechanic would take my coverage. I received my package to cover my repairs from CSE in Canton OHIO on Market and my car was still under warranty and the Credit Union stated I could not remove my extra that I had purchased for my vehicle, because it was tied into my Credit Union Car loan.

I have been contacted by these people and they say it would cost this or that much to fix this or that. In some parts of the country this may be true but not in my area. In my area it may be half that much, this is why I have never signed up. I figure you can't be honest when you are trying to sell me something you will not be honest when I need you,

Why pay insurance rates on a car that "might" break down. Take that high premium and put it in a savings account for that breakdown if and when you have a break down.

So tired of scammers!

i am wondering if i should cancel my plan with Cah shield. After reading what FTC says Car Sield didn't cover. i have not used the plan but am paying monthly $99.99 a month. Can someone please let me know what to do. i don't want to keep paying if the plan isn't going to cover repairs on my vehicle if i should need it. PLEASE HELP!!!

What happens to the 10M fine to Car Shield? Where does that money go and how to recoup for consumer would be helpful info. THank you

Thankfully this came out before I decided to bite the bullet and look into get this coverage with CarShield. I’ve been collecting their mailings for many months.

Some companies try to get over on customers by deceptive wording etc. I'm glad Car Shield got fined by the government for $10,000,000.00

I was a customer of theirs for seceral years. I never had any problems at first thank goodness. I own 2002 Oldsmobile Bravada. I moved to Georgia and in the middle of the mobe the Transmission went out so I contacted them to get service done. I was able to get a tow to Duvall Automotive. They told me the Transmisson was bad and I needed it replaced. So I contacted Car Shield to see what I needed to do. After months of no rental car and no word I finally paid to have it fixed out of my own pocket. I did finally get them to pay like $1,300 The other $1,600 came out of my pocket. I never did get a rental car. Car Shield was good about answering calls but the warranty people are horrendous to deal with they will never get my business again.

I've done paid over $5,000 in 5 years and they wouldn't even get my windows fixed. They ripped me off and that's sad

I've been paying on my Carshield & I had to fight them over the cost of my car rental charges. After it was delay after delay to get adjuster out. (Covid). They were going to give just $100 after over 8weeks car in the shop. I got $800 out of $900 car rental bill.
But it took alot of back & forth, as well as to threaten with attorney. I think it was like month 1/2 of talks/emails with them, they finally gave in to me & paid me.. YOU HAVE TO FIGHT THEM OVER MOST THINGS! THEY WANT TO SUPPLY THEIR OWN PARTS, ETC...

I am joining the choir. Car Shield sent me to 2 different car repair shops (one didn't do the work needed) and have now denied 2 claims that were stated were covered. They find a reason to deny the claim such as if the air conditioner doesn't work due to whatever they deny the claim however there is nothing to support that whatever in the contract. They are a fraud, misleading, unethical and need to be shut down. Please pass on to all of your family and friends do not use Care Shield.

Anyone know if there is a class action lawsuit? I’d love to join in! They have refused to pay several repairs that should be covered, and I fought tooth and nail to get them to cover my backup camera when it failed! And contacting them is next to impossible, they don’t return calls, and o have requested a copy of my contract several times. They won’t send hard copy, and the electronic version they sent via email can't be opened by ANY of my devices!
