Image of cupid and heartNot everyone using online dating sites is looking for love. Scammers create fake online profiles using photos of other people — even stolen pictures of real military personnel. They profess their love quickly. And they tug at your heartstrings with made-up stories about how they need money — for emergencies, hospital bills, or travel. Why all of the tricks? They’re looking to steal your money.

As if all that isn’t bad enough, romance scammers are now involving their victims in online bank fraud. Here’s how it works: The scammers set up dating profiles to meet potential victims. After they form a “relationship,” they come up with reasons to ask their love interest to set up a new bank account. The scammers transfer stolen money into the new account, and then tell their victims to wire the money out of the country. Victims think they’re just helping out their soulmate, never realizing they’re aiding and abetting a crime.

Here are some warning signs that an online love interest might be a fake. They ask you to:

  • chat off of the dating site immediately, using personal email, text, or phone
  • wire money using Western Union or Money Gram
  • set up a new bank account

Did you know you can do an image search of your love interest’s photo in your favorite search engine? If you do an image search and the person’s photo appears under several different names, you’re probably dealing with a scammer. And if the person’s online profile disappears a few days after they meet you, that’s another tip-off.

Here’s the real deal: Don’t send money to someone you met online — for any reason. If your online sweetheart asks for money, you can expect it’s a scam.

Unfortunately, online dating scams are all too common. There may be tens of thousands of victims, and only a small fraction report it to the FTC. If this happens to you, please report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

We are all worried about one of our relatives. She is being very secretive about her new “friend”. New friend is from the states but is out of the country because his mother died. He has been out of the country for many months and was coming home to meet her family. Cancelled at the last minute. We have his name now. Afraid to say it here. What can we do to protect her?

Beware of Words with Friends players. They are using that now, too. Ask you right away to get a hangout account so they can talk to you. Got one from CA - John William, and the next day one who says he’s from NYC and is now a surgeon with the UN peacekeeping force in Iraq. I don’t want to post that name because it is the name of a real surgeon in New Jersey, but that doctor is not in Iraq.

Someone actually tried to scam me earlier today on Google Hangouts, Nickki Thyke. Only chatted for a day or so. She met me on Twitter, accepted the friend request, and then moved to Google Hangouts. Within a few hours, the person told me she loved me, missed me, and such. Immediately, that was questionable. Then, the person said, if I trusted her, I would send her Steam gift cards. Major red flags there. So, this morning, after wondering I wasn't talking anymore, I started throwing out question after question which made the person upset. Personally, I knew in my gut this was a scam, so I didn't give up any cash or gift cards. That's when the threats started. The person said, "If you don't send me $500 in Steam cards, I will post a picture of you superimposed next to me and how you slept with me!" That resulted in an immediate block on Twitter with a screenshot of the threatening messages, an immediate block on Google Hangouts with the screenshots of the threatening messages, a report to the FBI, and a report to the FTC. I also 2-factored any bank logins I may have on my phone and shut down my Twitter account. Sounds extreme, but no big loss, there. What this taught me is it is VERY EASY to pull on the heart strings. Don't fall for it. It can happen to anyone. The answers to the right questions you ask can give you all the information you need to report the scammers.

Oh my gosh my guy is so convincing too. He goes by Jeffrey Noah David and lived in NY until his wife died after childbirth of his 3 yr old Eva. Hes supposedly from Switzerland but now lives in Sacramento CA. He "won" a great bid for a India telecommunication company called Punji Lloyd Group (he even emailed me a copy of contract). He apparently has been stuck in small village in a hotel since Oct 28th 2019, he keeps asking for money as he is so close to finishing multi million dollar job but a machine broke. Today was the funny part, he asked for money in a google play card ONLY as there are no other options to pay for his hotel and food to finish this job and he will also lose internet connection to talk to me. I was playing along today, little does he know I'm not that fricken DAFT/NAIVE but I did got his hotel info so I could pay direct for a night for him (ha ha, right) . BUT he said hes in such a small village they dont take online payments that the google play card can be sold to merchants in the village for US Currency so he can trade for his stay. Then he went on and on how much he misses me, and cant wait to finish this job and be in my arms plus relieve his poor old nanny from her care of his daughter this long. Blah blah.... ridiculous these scammers are way worse then the people on the corner asking for money cuz homeless, yet they drive away in a BMW !! Lol. I'm gonna keep messin with this guy..... it's kinda fun now.... muah ha ha ha

I was scammed by William Carroll Smith said he was from France. Wife died 5 years ago a 12 year old daughter in boarding school. There were red flags everywhere but my heart chose to ignore them. I was also ask to get him some iTunes cards. Spent 250 the first time then another 100 a month later. I also let him get a phone on my AT&T account. He bought 2 instead. And yes I’m stuck with those. He said he was an engineer contractor working on a rig in Spain. He said he would buy them in full. But did not yes he gave good excuses that I swallowed. He also had me open an account with coinbase. I’ve tried to close out the account but having trouble doing it. So I changed my password for now. This is a nightmare I would have given him my life. He knew I was retired and didn’t have the kind of money he wanted but he stuck it out. It came to an end when he ask me or told me he had a check coming from the uk and I was to contact this guy named David Myers and he would send me the check. But there was to be a fee for the delivery by Fedex over $200. instantly red flag explosion. Omg I am just sick about all of this. I had seen him as a friend I never expected to see him but loved talking to him. I want to hate him but I can’t seem to. But pray for all of us to regain our dignity. I’m an unhappy married woman who was feeling her lowest when he chose to friend me.

This is Catherine, scammed. My daughters tried to warn me. The named he shared was Dr Phillip Rogers. An Orthopedic Surgeon, stationed in Kabul Afghanistan.. Once he received the money for his 2 week vacation, called me 1 time, I stated his voice did not match his picture, he started laughing, never heard from him again. When you are lonely, in the middle of it, it’s hard to be objective. We must remain strong and see this for what it is. Sorry for all the pain humans are going thru because of this ruthless behavior. Very similar to mine. I met this guy on Instagram named Anderson Alpha but I am not sure if it's a scam. We've been chatting more than a month in Istagram and viber. He sent me photos and we do normal video calls. He even call my son His son which is very convincing. Then he told me he will go to Austalia for work, and before he went to Aus he send things, he even gave a tracking number from uniexpresscourier.net, checked it and seems legit. And after 4 days, a courier man called me and said that they custom scanned the parcel and found there's a lot of cash inside, iphone, ring etc., And i need to pay for penalty charge of $1,500. They sent an email of the break downs of payment. I talked to Andy, thats what i called him and he said to pay the amount so that the courier deliver the parcel at my door step. They gave an account number, seems a dollar account. But we didn't pay them thinking it's a scam. We still talked for another two days and still asking me to pay the penalty charge because there's a lot of cash in the parcel. I told him I will report the courier to the police because they're charging too much money for the parcel. And he got mad and said goodbye. He blocked me I think in Instagram and viber after that

I am so worried about my daughter. She is convinced this man From America is honest and sincere. He has spun a story abut selling his business and after 7 months talking on the phone and one brief meeting, wants to send her money so they can set up home together and has asked her to send £200 of Amazon vouchers to him. He has sent pictures of the most extravagant gifts he has bought for her. He has made arrangements to come over 4 times and has not been able to come for various reasons. It is so obvious to the family, but she will not listen. How can I expose him. It is so sad as she is very vulnerable and desperate to have a relationship

Scammers are much more prevalent. They often have lost their spouse in an accident, are traveling out of the country for work, have no children or one child and portray themselves as successful professionals. They want you to sign up for hangouts to communicate while they are overseas. Fall quick and hard without meeting you.

January 07, 2020
I wonder how is this possible in the civilised world...in the 21 th century...There should be media campains about scammers... I live in East Europe and there are campains about every other dangers...but nothing about these ones. Just one post in a newspaper about a woman scammed with 30.000 euro (yes, the ammount is real) who reported the fraud at the police, but no chance to get the money back... I have an instagram profile with a photo of me and my daughter, so scammers assume that I m single, so "attack' with messages...I read and answer them until a point bcs I want to know what are their latest tricks...so IF YOU SEARCH HERE ABOUT A NAME IT S USELESS, THEY USE A DIFFERENT NAME FOR EACH VICTIM...and sometimes they mistake the name (it happened to one scammer writing me, maybe he was tired or the person writing in the fake lover s behalf changed). They all touch love and family feelings, " I love my son/daughter/children very much" or "I studied hard to make my mom/dad/parents proud" etc. The family name Williams I saw it s preffered by them and also a story with being widowed and wife died of breast cancer (they specify it) or car accident, and them being left with one or two children. They use two main lines of scamming: one of being on a military hospital/oil ring and being kept there, or other: initially posing into a succesfull bussinessman, travelling to make contracts, and then being stucked somewhere, with the passport lost or kept by someone, accounts blocked and running out of cash for food, asking virtual money as bitcoin, amazon or Itunes giftcards for buying food, saying that they are "so hungry". Some claim they are so religious, going to church every Sunday, speaking about God, thanking God for the contracts they made. One asked which colour I prefere and immediately asked what colour is my car, wanting to know in reality if i own a car... One was writing in may 2019 on fb mess from a profile which was blocked during the conversations (maybe someone reported it) and he came back also on fb mess from another fb profile created in 2017 (he said he was using them alternatively) which also had posts on it. So, they have many profiles already created and use them as needed...and after starting a conversation on fb mess or instagram, they ask to go on hangouts or skype or whatsapp, meaning obtaing the mail adress and phone number... I think this is important and all should know!!!! As some of their patterns...because they have some common patterns, but the names are always different... And dear FTC, people should be better informed...of course in the end to send money to a stranger is a personal decision, but more information would help for sure, especially the lonely old people needing company and confort...

Has anyone come across a guy claiming to be an engineer from upstate New York working in Germany? He DM’d me on Instagram and said his name was Viktor. He said he’s 43 but I think he’s younger based on the music he sends me. I’ve busted him and found the person whose pictures he was using who is in Germany and his excuse was that he only used them because the guy in the pics was better looking than him. The pics he now sends look too good to be true and he’s asking for money to pay his mom’s hospital bills. He won’t send pics right away when I ask and some were edited. He makes excuses to go on Skype and when I searched his IP address it shows Vienna. I know I’m being scammed and I just feel stuck. He says he loves me and wants to marry me and come back to the states or bring me to Germany. He texts me morning and night. How do you get out of this web? So angered at myself that I am not stronger than this. Help! I hate that I have feelings for this guy..

I've got a live one on my hands. His "name" is Andy Fernando. Says he's from Belgium but lives in IL. Says he's a surgeon on a UN peacekeeping mission in Damascus, Syria in the middle of a civil war. Right. A peacekeeping mission when there's no peace? He's professed his undying love for me. His parents are dead and his wife died 6 years ago. He's got a daughter Brooklyn in boarding school in Rockford, IL. Who goes to boarding school in Rockford? Says the government has frozen his funds and he can't send his daughter the basics or even Christmas presents. I told him to never ask me for a dime. Said he wouldn't. I'm stringing him along to see how far he will take this and to try to report him to whomever I can. These scammers are scum. Luckily, I haven't given him anything nor will I ever.

Told me his account is frozen and need to buy laptop and phone for his daughter’s birthday. Long hair with beard? Muscular body?

Yes, anyone asking you for steam cards, amazon cards, iTunes cards, money, ask you to accept any type of package (then they try to stiff you with paying fees to “customs”). Ask you to marry them without meeting, or want you to send gifts to their “child”, Are scammers. Don’t waste any more of your time.
