A caller says that he’s from the government and your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended. He sounds very professional. So you should do exactly what he says to fix things…right?

Wrong.

The FTC has gotten reports about scammers trying to trick people out of their personal information by telling them that they need to “reactivate” their supposedly “suspended” SSNs. The scammers say the SSN was suspended because of some connection to fraud or other criminal activity. They say to call a number to clear it up – where they’ll ask you for personal information.

Thing is, Social Security numbers do not get suspended. This is just a variation of a government imposter scam that’s after your SSN, bank account number, or other personal information. In this variation of the scheme, the caller pretends to be protecting you from a scam while he’s trying to lure you into one.

Here are a few tips to protect yourself:

  • Never give out or confirm personal information over the phone, via email or on a website until you’ve checked out whoever is asking you for it.
  • Do not trust a name, phone number, or email address just because it seems to be connected with the government. Con artists use official-sounding names and may fake caller ID or email address information to make you trust them. Besides, the government normally contacts people by postal mail.
  • Contact government agencies directly, using telephone numbers and website addresses you know to be legitimate.

If someone has tried to steal your personal information by pretending to be from the government, report it to the FTC.

I have gotten them all and just ignore and block them. As mentioned above if you can report it, take the opportunity to do so. Otherwise take in consideration an additional thing, if it is official you would receive some sort of official documentation through the mail. It does not matter where from you will receive it in the mail first. So if on the phone a scammer is thretning all I do is say "Great then you can mail me the legal documents or bill and I will present them to my lawyer and may I have your name for future reference?" Learned this a long time ago and the hard way.

During weekdays I get 5 to 8 calls a day ( its annoying because I get several calls from drs so i dont know if its the drs or those people)and always 718 area code numbers but never the same phone numbers . The automated voice told me to press one so I did and the lady say " Social security how can I help you? And I answered " you called me" and she repeats it again " social security " so me being curious ( I already knew it had to be a scam) she asks" what's your name and social security number"? I told her "you should have that seeing as you called me" ! She hung up real quick ! A hour later same thing 718 area code but different number, and this time a guy as soon as I said " I'm reporting " didn't even let me say you,he hung up ! I'm tired of this any suggestions ? As when I try calling back a machine comes out saying number isn't working ,or wrong number,to try and find correct number and try again.

I get the I am an officer or a supervisor for the social security department. Now they are asking for the last four digits and I tell them no, and I know it is a scam. They hang up

There should be a phone number that people can call to give them the phone number these scammers are calling from at least this would give them a starting ground to track number and get these dam people. These are trying times and people like this should get locked up or worse.

So today I got a call from 202-242-9105 and the investigator gave me his name Holmes and he said his badge number so quickly it was unreal. He went on to tell me about all the suspicion activity associated with my Social Security number asked me for my zip code and FULL social security number. I gave him a bogus zip code and a name of a person deceased. And he told me that an officer would be at my place of residence within the hour if I could not provide active banking info. I told him make sure they came to Rosehill Gardens and my plot number was Section 6 B2111 but to hurry up because I was moving shortly. He said thank you please hold and when he realized I was talking just as crazy to him as he was to me he disconnected the call. GET A REAL JOB.
