Phishing scams can be hard to spot. For example, we’ve been hearing about one where people get a text message saying that there’s a package waiting for them, and asking them to click a link to learn more. Sounds innocent enough, right? Unfortunately not.

Text blurb that says: Thomas, we came across a parcel from March pending for you. Kindly claim ownership and schedule for deliver here: (blurred link).

The messages are coming from scammers. In some cases, they’re targeted at college students. In that version, scammers text returning students to say there’s a package waiting for them — sometimes claiming it’s been waiting since last spring, when many students had to go home from campus quickly.

Whatever the message is, this rule stays the same: If you get an unexpected text message about a package, don’t click on any links. If you think the message could be legit, contact the company using a website or phone number you know is real. But don’t use the information in the text message.

Why do you want to avoid clicking the link? Once you click, they can trick you into giving personal information — letting scammers steal your passwords, account numbers, or Social Security numbers. Clicking these links could also let scammers download malware onto your device.

Thanks for posting this. I got this exact email today and copy and pasted what it said into Google to see if anyone else had gotten the same email. Much appreciated.

Similar to the notes below - I have received 2 text messages in the last 3 days. One for USPS saying there was a package waiting and other today saying FEDEX has a package for me. Have not clicked the link and deleted.

In my case the Auto extended insurance scam by phone is the one I get the most of, particularly in my land line. I've received other suspicious emails, and the first thing I do is look at the sender's email; it is usually a weird one having nothing to do with the message. What I've been doing now for my sanity is ignore all calls I don't recognize; my thinking is if it's legit they'll live a message. The calls haven't stopped, but at least they are no longer getting on my nerves.

I got an email from the "USPS" stating that they tried to deliver a package. They wanted a credit card to receiver which I did NOT give them.

I just received an email with the clearly fake USPS logo on it. I have an account and POBOX but I with another mail. Double check always the mail [usps never will use a HOTMAIL as they adress]. Same with the link provided to follow [checked without opening and was an external "contaboserver" server in Germany]. If they provide a tracking number, check it on the real USPS site, specially if you are waiting a package. Is easy to be fooled at first glance, since everybody is buying stuff via mail in these hard times. Be safe.

I have received several emails from “CVS” about a package waiting for delivery and needing information. It is being caught by my IOS Gmail app as spam ok. When I try to “empty spam,” all spam messages are removed ok except theCVS one. I have to manually presently delete it.
