Here at the FTC, we think about scams all day long. What are the scammers’ new angles? How can we keep ahead of them? We hear from people about the scams they see, and we turn that into tips people use to spot and avoid scams.

But scammers find FTC staff, just as they find the rest of America. My colleagues and I have even gotten calls on our work phones, offering reduced credit card interest rates, or claiming to be tech support calling about problems with our computers. We also get the calls at home. In fact, someone claiming to work for the IRS called my house just last week:

This has all the signs of an IRS imposter scam. In fact, the IRS won’t call out of the blue to ask for payment, won’t demand a specific form of payment, and won’t leave a message threatening to sue you if you don’t pay right away. Have you gotten a bogus IRS call like this? If you did, report the call to the FTC and to TIGTA – include the phone number it came from, along with any details you have.

I just played a voicemail call a few minutes ago staring it was officer Jonathan Knight with the same message others have posted. I freaked out & began hyperventilating trying to figure what I could have done on my tax returns that is unethical. The number left on voicemail was 509-740-0316.

I got a voicemail yesterday but it was from a person not a machine. They made it sound so real, it really scared me. They told me I was facing 5 years of imprisonment, my license would be revoked, etc. I needed to pay $500 that day to show good faith and cancel the arrest warrant that was out for me. I'm still shaken and having chest pains they scared me so bad. I thought it was strange that they wanted me to buy iTunes gift cards as proof of payment. He wouldn't let me off the phone and when I finally figured it out and hung up they called me back 15 times. I ignored them. Most calls were from a restricted number but others came from 910-585-7911 and 206-495-9230. I really got suspicious when he told me his name was Jim Martin but he clearly had a foreign accent.

I have been receiving these phone calls and since I have a Florida number I've been getting him from all the way up and down the Eastern Seaboard regarding the IRS and I'm going to jail. Now the new number is 509-214-2250. The question I have is They Know My Name by address how much other information do they know does anyone have any information on this? My best friend got taken by these people but they weren't saying they were the IRS they were somebody else is she put $1,700 into the Wells Fargo account she didn't please report but they can't do anything about it they have so many things going on. I guess the best advice that anyone can give his don't answer the phone unless it's in your contacts and if something like this comes up report it to the police and file a complaint with the people above. One of the phone calls I received even threatened a little boy that lives with me so they have to know and have access to information. If please leave a remark if you have any more information thank you

I have been receiving them now for two weeks they're spoofing others numbers making it look local. Every time threatening me with jail time for multiple violations. I keep telling them to hurry and get here before I leave work or home. It's been two weeks and I think my 24 hours is up, local police don't have a clue.

Just got a voicemail from 240-532-8358 with prerecorded message saying a lawsuit is field against you for tax evasion and tax fraud with no name and asked me to call back since the case is time sensitive. Appears to me a scam as why IRS would file a lawsuit out of the blue wiper any written information and moreover I am paying my taxes on time.

Also a thick Indian accent from a man who talked fast and got annoyed with my questions. He called from 769-206-3828. When I looked up the number, I was directed to this sight. He knew my name and address and said charges were being filed against me for medical fraud. He proceeded to tell me that I could resolve the issue then or plead my case at the courthouse. He was evasive when I asked him where the courthouse was. He finally relented and sais, "Here." There is no way I could travel to MS. He then told me if I didn't do either, "the police will haul" me to the courthouse. I told him we'd do that then and hung up. He gave me a case number and a "badge number." The badge number is: 201589 When I search for it, I am also led here. I did try to file a complaint. The first sight was "blocked for security" something and the second sight wanted me to add "a valid email address." I've been using that email for years.

I got the same automated message (from Burbank, CA) about being sued by the IRS. I called back and "officer" (Indian/spanish accents) explained that they (the IRS) had tried to contact me via mail and that I had been sued by the IRS for tax fraud ($5500). When I challenged their claim they hung-up on me. I continued to call them back many times for the next 6-8 hours to curse and harass them. After a while they were cursing me back and ignoring/blocking my calls. It was actually fun getting them worked up, tying up their lines and cursing back-and-forth.

I received a voice recording phone number 1 747 200-9552 advising they were the IRS and need to talk to me regarding a recent tax filing and if I didn't respond the police will be picking me up. I knew it was a fraud because the IRS notify you by letter, but I called just to see what they would say. Basically the male that answered the phone identified himself as a representative from the IRS and asked why I was calling, I received a call and returning the call. I believe they have caller ID and he repeated my address and said that is correct. He told me I was being recorded and not to talk while he was talking. I told him to record this I know the IRS does not conduct business by making phone calls and not to call my phone number again and that I was reporting him to the IRS. He said thank you.
