Image of cupid and heartNot everyone using online dating sites is looking for love. Scammers create fake online profiles using photos of other people — even stolen pictures of real military personnel. They profess their love quickly. And they tug at your heartstrings with made-up stories about how they need money — for emergencies, hospital bills, or travel. Why all of the tricks? They’re looking to steal your money.

As if all that isn’t bad enough, romance scammers are now involving their victims in online bank fraud. Here’s how it works: The scammers set up dating profiles to meet potential victims. After they form a “relationship,” they come up with reasons to ask their love interest to set up a new bank account. The scammers transfer stolen money into the new account, and then tell their victims to wire the money out of the country. Victims think they’re just helping out their soulmate, never realizing they’re aiding and abetting a crime.

Here are some warning signs that an online love interest might be a fake. They ask you to:

  • chat off of the dating site immediately, using personal email, text, or phone
  • wire money using Western Union or Money Gram
  • set up a new bank account

Did you know you can do an image search of your love interest’s photo in your favorite search engine? If you do an image search and the person’s photo appears under several different names, you’re probably dealing with a scammer. And if the person’s online profile disappears a few days after they meet you, that’s another tip-off.

Here’s the real deal: Don’t send money to someone you met online — for any reason. If your online sweetheart asks for money, you can expect it’s a scam.

Unfortunately, online dating scams are all too common. There may be tens of thousands of victims, and only a small fraction report it to the FTC. If this happens to you, please report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

This sounds like a scam.

Other people have written to the FTC about this scam. The person you met online is setting you up to take your money. He meets you, then makes up a story about sending gifts. Then you get messages saying you have to pay fees, taxes or charges before you can get the package. The "customs" person who calls or emails you is really another scammer working with the first person. They pressure you to pay. They might threaten you.

But in this scam, there really is no great new guy, no gift, no courier or any of that. You can stop communicating with them. If you gave them bank account or other important information, change numbers and take steps to protect your information.

Just leave it and do not reply to any email. That website is fake with fake package tracking number. They are trying to steal your money. There is no package at all. Do NOT send any money and just stop it. No worry. They can't do anything to you.

Chispa Scammer Alert
June 05, 2020
Gabriel Raymond Santos swiped right on profile on Chispa dating site. We communicated a few times and he sent me cell number (646)8933391 and email gabsantoszil@ said he didn't have full service so would be easier. After few weeks told me he loved me and he was selected to leave oil facility in Turkey to go to China for c19 recovery mission other engineers were infected and replacements were needed. He ask I contact UN General Jacob Brian at generaljacobbrian243@ to ask if he could be removed from list due to being an orphan and single dad of David living in England boarding school. I sent the email then the General said there was a replacement fee needed so Gabriel didn't have to go. Today's communication didn't give me bank account information as to where the money had to sent because I have to choice which country. I no longer want to engage so I decided to file this complaint for fear of something happening to me or my family. I reseached UN directory name doesn't exist. I reversed image search Gabriels and General's picture. No match on Gab but General's came back as stock photo. I also used telephone look found the cell is a VoIP number not actual cell number for iPhone user...number used NYC area code. Gab promised to triple pay me back said Brazil bank forces him to be in person using thumb print to pay out large amounts from his account. I have emails, text and pictures if helpful. oh...he played on my religious beliefs saying God would protect us from scammers because I mentioned my worries and suspicion. Be on alert...scammer alert!

Ladies, please be careful of this guy sammy. He will usually say Hi and you have a beautiful smile. Once he gets your attention, he will charm you and after a few days, he will tell you something bad happened and he need to help his mother or family in hospital. He will say he is very lonely in London and holds an MBA but he really dont know much about the subject at all. Pretty sure he got someone help to pass. Slowly I gave him some money and it became more and more until his mother died. I will never know if he spent it on himself or with other women. He promotes himself as an arts collector. He has his unique way to make you feel guilty not helping him financially. Please be careful if you ever come across this man from Portsmouth.

Hi!! the guy I was talking until today had a similar story, Engineer who used to work at Exxon, now a contractor in a oil rig in Turkey, his name is supposedly Terry Christopher Ralston. He claims to be 46. A widow with a 12yr old daughter living with the nanny while he is abroad. After a month and a half and truly falling for him, I stopped conversations because of what I am reading. I told him a lie didn't call him out on it because he has pictures of me and my daughters. We were not at the stage where he asked for money but already asked me to send an email for him to a company located in UK, everything seemed so real, he sent pictures every time I ask... even pics of his daughter (but it must be someone else now that I read all your comments)... but when he asked me to send an email on his behalf, I started to read these blogs and stopped today. How naive!! but I am lonely and wanted to believe him. oh well, fortunately, it won't happen again and I will be way way more alert next time.

I was contacted by Terry C Ralston as well through LinkedIn. This was right when all international flights got halted by Covid. He told me all the same things. He was stuck on an oil rig. He migrated over from Mexico. Moves to Brooklyn. Father left him and his mom. His mom died in the twin towers as a housekeeper. Wife died in a terrible car accident. His life was his 10 year old daughter. Of course I was somewhat suspicious. Called him out in it and he got real defensive. I have only met professional people on Linkedin, so I was on the fence about him. We talked a lot and I had feelings for him. Then he asked me to send emails for him for a company in UK. Had a problem with his bank back in San Jose because of a large deposit that was made into his account so he couldn’t pay the company for part in UK. As soon as he started to freak out about how to May them, he asked me to pay it for him. $7500!!! I immediately deleted my WhatsApp account and the email I used to communicate with the UK company. Blocked him on LinkedIn. I felt bad for a bit, but after finding this, I am so darn glad I did. Hope more people find this page. Jerks

Im talking with someone from Senegal. Currently, he has been living in Germany and goes by the name of 'Rambo Ba'. Profession is A body builder. Sports etc. A Muscular dark skin. He said he was prior to this in the Army and the best, a Major. Straight away he said I am the one. Proclaiming his honesty, love and marriage, which is just for me. He sent me lots of pictures of himself. He said the house he built, burnt down in Senegal which he is currently rebuilding for his family out there. He sent a picture of a burnt out house as proof. So four days later, he said he has no money to pay for his son's emergency knee operation. So now, he is in the process of asking for money because it has to be paid off right away. I offered my empathy for such a tradgedy to happen to any child. Please tell me is this a scam. Does anyone relate to this story.

I have been communicating with a Air Force man, he says he was born in Norway, moved to US when he was 20 yrs old to help his uncle with a Auto mechanics business in N.Y (Chinatown) . We have been talking now for a week on Hangouts app. He was in Tacoma,WA but was deployed to Izmir Turkey two days after we started chatting. He has been in the Air Force for 14 yrs now. He’s not asked for anything yet, he has sent me photos and gave me his phone number. He has two full sleeve tattoos, one with roses and other side with scroll design with “XVII “ for the last time of a tour....very very nice muscle body. He has the name LUKE tattoo on his fingers that he says is his fathers name that died 4 years ago in Norway. He has a tattoo across his abdomen that says “CARPENTER” And the alpha and omega quote tattooed on his right chest. His name is Walker Donnie Andersen he says. Has anyone received text, email or chats from him? I told him up front ...do not ask me for money, credit card, banking help or info my address or any personal info from me. I told him I don’t have money, I am having a hard time myself since this Pandemic. I told him I will chat with him but that is all, to keep ourselves company. His is in the Air Force as OED (bomb specialist) I have pic of him in uniform and next to blown up foreign tank with full uniform and weapon. Just wanted to see if anyone else has ever heard of this person. I even have his phone number and it is from New York (607) area code. He just sounds too good to be true. I have looked up his name but no info is available just phone number from NY. Just wanted to put it out there. Thanks guys....hope I’m proven wrong about him...but I’d like to know for sure. I am suspicious and very careful in my conversations.

Just me
May 07, 2020
I have been talking to this guy for probably a month and a half to two months now but, he asked me within the two weeks to buy him a steam card.I ended up blocking him everything about him was some guy comes on by the name of Chris arthour, says some sweet little things and said that he was My guys calling and that he had been sick and so forth and so on over the fact that I have blocked him and he said I shouldn't hurt the heart that loves me so that's pulled at my heartstrings a little bit. So I unblocked and started talking to him and we were having fun and he said his phone was running slow so I went out and bought him $350 worth of steam cards wow supposably, I sold one to his friend named Jeff which whom I believe now is the same person that I've been talking to. supposably he got into trouble with the base later because Chris had seen him texting on his phone and he needed another $50 card to talk to his wife so be leaving him at this point in time I went out and bought another $50 thing card for Chris and supposedly Chris was the one who told the base later. My guy was calling from his phone which they are supposedly not supposed to be doing because of security reasons. And I know they have to be careful over and Kabul Afghanistan I know that but I also know that they can make calls so I started getting a little weary, well next thing I know he told me he has a briefcase with a security company because he doesn't trust Banks it has over 2 million dollars in it his birth certificate his social security number so forth and so on. well I emailed the company to see what I needed to do to collect this briefcase they want $800 for an application when I went back and told my guy that I didn't have that kind of money even though I do he flipped the script on me trying to make me feel guilty that he doesn't have any friends he has no family he is divorced because his wife cheated on him I am the only one he can depend on. And I kept trying to tell him I don't have that kind of money so I've been acting like I'm trying to get a loan to help him which I'm not because I know now and believe deep down in my heart that he is a scammer he has sent me pictures supposedly he's a doctor he claims that hedoesn't get his money from the Navy because it goes straight to the wheelhouse the name of the wheelhouse is limo Stones security company I looked it up there's no such thing I'm very smart when it comes to these scammers. But he claims to be so in love with me that he's coming to the states and marrying me and he wants me to get this money so I can buy our house and I can start living in it until he gets here. Well I had an old picture supposably he was talking to my daughter but he was actually talking to me because I am so tired of hearing about this stupid briefcase that he can't do anything about while he's over in Kabul Afghanistan. He's a very very good-looking guy if that's even him some of the pictures that I started looking at looks like they have been photoshopped see what I mean I'm very smart when it comes to these scammers. So my daughter tells him which is actually me that I'm being hospitalized because I really do have afib but that's what I told him that they were hospitalized in May for afib if he's a doctor he knows what it is. Supposedly he's a doctor in the US army over in Kabul Afghanistan and his name Jeffery Kimmy and supposedly he is from Las Vegas. But the more I see his texts the more he sounds like a foreigner to me so I believe he has picked some pictures from the military and he had a picture taken of him and his friend Chris Chris's face is really super blurry we can barely see it. I just need to know if I am truly being scammed. If I'm not he's still not getting $800 for me because that's not my responsibility I don't care how much he loves me and I ain't started with this love stuff about a week to week and a half after we started talking the first time he don't know I will block him again and he will never talk to me he will never be able to get any of my information to be able to talk to me and then he tells me if I leave him he will hurt himself I want to say to him come here I'll give you the knife to do it with he don't know me I can be very mean and vicious when somebody is playing on my heartstrings. I'm just glad I'm smart enough to know and realize that she might be trying to play me for a fool.

Also be careful of talking to who you might think might be a celebrity I spoken to Kenny Chesney and Brett Eldredge they have sent me home pictures and supposably when I was sent a video from Kenny Chesney it was actually an old interview that I found online on YouTube I couldn't hear what he was saying but I actually thought I was talking to Kenny Chesney then he asked me he could send me money he wanted to take care of me because I was such a beautiful woman and he wanted to take care of me and give me an allowance when I would not give him my PIN codes and stuff to my bank and my social security number and my account numbers he flipped out and called me all kinds of names so be careful who you talk to don't give out your social security number no kind of Bank information or anything like that because these scammers are really getting aggressive real aggressive now. So please please I'm begging you be very careful do not get your heart mixed up oh and the doctor that's over in Kabul Afghanistan he had me go immediately to hang out so I was kind of leery about that as well as Jenny Chesney and Brett Eldredge took me to Hangouts Kenny Chesney don't know anything about no Hangouts I actually did get to speak to the real Kenny Chesney because I had put everything on Twitter and he actually got in touch with me and he told me do not accept any more thing that if it was really him he would have a blue tick by his name so be careful who you talk to I know people out there want to find love really bad I do but I don't trust online dating sites shoot I don't even trust them meeting them face-to-face. And Brett Eldredge kept trying to get me to get on a plane and come to Nashville that he would pay for it that could be a human trafficking human traffickers are doing that now so please be careful people I don't want anything to happen to y'all these people are dangerous

I'm sure this ones a scammer, nelly johnson from Africa, he was orphaned at 10, raised in an orphanage, he went through university. He appeared on Instagram and messaged.... it follows the same style as old Wilson Heinrich used. The first message is as follows: Life is good when somebody cares, Life is uplifting when someone is always there, Life is great when someone would protect you and suffer, cherish life because God loves you always, May God stay with you this day and give you peace of mind, May God give you a happy heart and his love all the time. Good luck never regret a day in your life, Good days give you happiness. Bad days give you experience. Both are essential in life, life is mixture of sunshine and rain, teardrops And laughter, pleasure and pain. Just remember, there Was never a cloud that the sun couldn’t Shine through, Good Morning, hope you had a good night rest? How you feeling today, just checking on you to know how you doing this morning, do have a nice and blessed day and be safe always, bye for now and hope to hear from you soon. So I'm convinced hes not real, I've said about 5 words to him, he already wants to visit me, and because I'm not responding to his messages, hes getting very angry... watch out for him. His photo is that of a happy looking black man, white hat.

I’ve experienced a number of scammers.. all the females said the were being stationed overseas and asked for iTunes cards or money.. the guys claim they are widows and have a kid but are working overseas.. fortunately I dropped each one as soon as they asked for money.. then after experiencing too many of the same scenario I just stopped talking to anyone I didn’t know.. I guess I’m lucky because I didn’t let any of them scam me.. don’t trust anyone you never met!!

I am new to the whole internet dating. And I am sure that we are talking about the same person. The person I’ve been chatting with goes by the name of Ryan Lucas. States that he is stationed in Turkey by the UN and has a daughter in Kansas. Wife died of cancer a few years back. Once he finishes this order he wants to come back to me. Calls me his queen, my love. Etc. in addition to that, i met him on Plenty of Fish, asked me to go to What’sapp and then Hangouts. Been chatting since two weeks ago and suddenly I got a message from his 7 year old daughter that she needed a steam card. She also called me mom. This is so creepy. I was talking to a guy named Dave Lucas. Working as a doctor for the UN and was in Warsaw Poland. Divorced and has a daughter named Zoe who is 11 and away at some school. Said he was born in South Africa and spent 10 years in Chicago studying to be a doctor. He sent me pics of this hot guy. Called me frequently and texted frequently on Hangouts. He first contacted me on Instagram. Told me loves me, sent me poems and called me “my love”. His accent is very heavy and his grammar through texts is not very good but the poems are correct and so are the captions on his Instagram pics. He asked me to send him a google gift card and I refused. Said he needed it for his WiFi connection on his lap top to do his work projects and to talk to me on hangouts. I wish there was a way to upload pictures on this site maybe it might be easier to identify these scammers. I know they use different names, dories and pictures but it still could be helpful. Boy this guy was a charmer to. dav_elucas is his user name on Instagram right now.
