Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

I just got a very simliar call to this article from 312-500-6984. Obvious recording - "This is a final attempt to reach you to resolve this issue immediately. Please call us back on 312-500-6984 to speak with a federal agent. I repeat, 312-500-6984. Thank you." I've gotten five of these calls in the last three or so days from different numbers. Something needs to be done to shut these people down.

A man called me this afternoon saying that he was from the Social Security administration office. He told me that he was an officer and that there was a warrant out for my arrest! He told me that two people in Texas were using my Social Security number for tens of thousands of dollars the purchases to and from Mexico in Columbia. That it was for illegal drugs and since it was mice Social Security number that the warrant was out for my arrest – although it was not me making these purchases obviously. I got so scared and was very naïve, he asked me for the The last four digits of my Social Security number which I gave him! I’m very nervous about that. He also asked me about my Chase bank account and my Discover card account. He was asking me what the limit on my Discover card was, I tried informing him that I was $1000 over my limit I had to explain that to him three times, which made me very suspicious. Then he asked me how much money I had in my Chase account, unfortunately I have -$95 in there, which I also told him The last four digits of my Social Security number which I gave him! I’m very nervous about that. He also asked me about my Chase bank account and my Discover Card account. He was asking me what the limit on my Discover card was, I tried informing him that I was $1000 over my limit I had to explain that to him three times, which made me very suspicious. Then he asked me how much money I had in my Chase account, unfortunately I have -$95 in there, which I also told him Because I thought it was real he made me so nervous about it! I also thought it was real because he gave me a case number, his name and badge number and the arrest warrant number. He called from the telephone number 866–2 17–8642. He told me my SSA case Number was 19FMC107. He told me his name was Officer Glensmits. He told me his bad Nici number was 02840175. And then he told me my arrest warrant number was 02954698. I don’t know if any of this information will help out, but I hope it does! This is very scary and unbelievable that people are doing this to others! This guy had me on the phone in tears over the situation that I naïvely at first thought was real! After filing my intuition, the first red flag was his very strong Indian accent. The second red flag was him not understanding that I was over my credit card limit. So I looked up online if people could call pretending to be SSA employees and found an article basically explaining a recent scam and it was exactly what happened to me! Oh yes and he said that my Social Security number was being used by two different people in Texas. I feel so foolish for giving him the last four of my social but fortunately I’m so broke I don’t think I’ll have any interest in getting into my bank accounts.

I just got it too. FTC, perhaps you could add some kind of super simple survey counter. If 35K people bothered to report this, there are probably over a million calls. Why isnt this kind of junk not being prosecuted, it'd be so easy to do this day and age to fish them. Set up a scam forwarding number and an openly available phone service that fwds suspected scams to the FTC, then the FTC only needs to pick up the phone on one or two occasions and drag the scammers in. An undergrad CS student could set that up for you.

Just got one of these from 1-800-395-6137. I was in a weird mood, so I pressed 1 to speak to “Officer Alex Lawrence” (who spoke with a possibly Russian accent) and played along for about 10 minutes which is time they cant call someone else. The call ended when he figured out I was messing with him and he told me he was sending the US Marshals to arrest me. He also told me what they would do to me in prison. I’m not mad at these anymore. Just have fun with it. Be safe out there.

Today I have got a call from the following number +1 800 098 9470 conveying that my social security benefits will be suspended due to suscipious activities. When they asked for my name, I told them that they are calling me and should have my name and SSN #. They were able to tell my full name (it scares me a little definitely) and when I asked them to tell my SSN # - he couldn't - not sure whether he deliberately withheld that info or played with me - but definitely it bothers me to know that someone has the full name and the mobile # with wrong intention. I would like gov agencies to monitor such calls and take appropriate actions for the good of all.

I have receive these calls numerous times. This Tuesday I chose to call them back and learned that after repeatedly calling them 50+ times that day and irritating them, they disabled that phone number. Wednesday they called again from a CA phone number. When all was said and done, I had called them back over 150 times on Wednesday and now that number is disabled. I know it seems like a lot of energy wasted but I haven’t received a call today and hopefully my over 200 calls back to them prevented them from calling 200 people to attempt to scam.
