Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Phone 1-833-831-8191 - Got a voicemail that indicates "our department is to inform you that there's a law enforcement complaint filed on your SSN for fraudulent activity so before this matter goes to the state and before you get arrested (this is when I knew it was a total scam) but if you need any information or have any questions - kindly call us back. " I called (because I was furious - not a good idea - and asked them what this is all about - they hung up on me.

I received a call they left a message stating my SS# was suspended. I do not answer calls that are not in my contacts. Generally if I receive a call not on my contacts list I don't answer, if they are legit they'll leave a message BUT sometimes scammers will leave a message, I'll listen to message but NEVER will I call back. I'll also add that number to my "blocked list" so they can't call back. It's really a shame our Government isn't more concerned with these scam calls but as another post stated it's a very difficult issue. Get this, I receive as many scam phone calls as legit calls, it's that bad.

This number 1-313-666-4004 called my cell phone and left a message (as I don't answer any calls that I don't know) and stated that my Social Security card was involved in a crime and that I needed to call them right away or legal action was going to be taken against me???? I googled this number above and it was from a foreign land and not operable here in the US. Please don't call this number back...it is a scam....

Yes, same as mine probably the same day. What I really want is an extra telephone feature to just push a button that will explode the phone that calls me.

I received 2 calls yesterday (602-501-9762 and 602-501-7237). One I answered and the robocop gave an Officer's name (I can't remember now what it was). The second left a voicemail. Both messages stated my SSN has been used for some fraudulent activities in the south border of Texas and to press 1 to speak with an officer. I didn't.

They think they can fool you by changing the number they call from, but it's the same msg basically: Fraud detected on your SSN; call immediately to avoid arrest, etc. I love calling them back and acting stupid, and of course I never reveal personal info like my real name, and SSN; love stringing them along! Just got this call and I let it go to vm. Here’s the message. “So before we go ahead and legally blocking your Social Security number so kindly press one to connect to our __________________________ us back on our number that is 854-227-6104 I repeat is 854-227-6104 sorry you did not press one yet kindly please press one to contact our officer thank you and have a blessed day…” So I called the number and a person with a very thick Indian accent answered. I told him I was returning the call and demanded to know if he was the SSA or connected to the federal government. He refused to answer. So I let him know that I’m reporting him.
