Image of cupid and heartNot everyone using online dating sites is looking for love. Scammers create fake online profiles using photos of other people — even stolen pictures of real military personnel. They profess their love quickly. And they tug at your heartstrings with made-up stories about how they need money — for emergencies, hospital bills, or travel. Why all of the tricks? They’re looking to steal your money.

As if all that isn’t bad enough, romance scammers are now involving their victims in online bank fraud. Here’s how it works: The scammers set up dating profiles to meet potential victims. After they form a “relationship,” they come up with reasons to ask their love interest to set up a new bank account. The scammers transfer stolen money into the new account, and then tell their victims to wire the money out of the country. Victims think they’re just helping out their soulmate, never realizing they’re aiding and abetting a crime.

Here are some warning signs that an online love interest might be a fake. They ask you to:

  • chat off of the dating site immediately, using personal email, text, or phone
  • wire money using Western Union or Money Gram
  • set up a new bank account

Did you know you can do an image search of your love interest’s photo in your favorite search engine? If you do an image search and the person’s photo appears under several different names, you’re probably dealing with a scammer. And if the person’s online profile disappears a few days after they meet you, that’s another tip-off.

Here’s the real deal: Don’t send money to someone you met online — for any reason. If your online sweetheart asks for money, you can expect it’s a scam.

Unfortunately, online dating scams are all too common. There may be tens of thousands of victims, and only a small fraction report it to the FTC. If this happens to you, please report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

I have been scammed by Steven Gros, who is supposedly from France where his aunt and mother live! He claims to be on a rig in Prudoh Bay, Alaska, and had me wire $$ to Thailand to pay for his goods so he could complete his job! I gave him $122,000 and am embarrassed and devastated! He still claims he will be with me when this is all done!

Mjbrown...I am afraid we have both been scammed by this Steven Gros. I loved him too and even stupidly took out a mortgage so I could send him $$. I finally got wise to him, but too late to restore my money!! I was so very devastated...said all the right things, made promises and sent me wonderful songs. I know exactly how you feel..

I met a guy online in May and his name is Oliver Giovanni. In late July he said he got a job contract that needed him to work at one of the oil rigs in Bulgaria in August. Amidst the current situation, who would send a private jet to get him (from LA) to the job site? He said he's now at the rig. I am suspicious about that.

There are no oil rigs in Bulgaria. But one supposed marine engineer of Amarican/Australian origin claims that he works on an oil platform in Brisbane high sea. Reed Adams. With the same pictures I have been approached by 4-5 different scammers. Couple of doctors, an army official and couple of engineers from oil rigs. They all talk about private jets and yahts.

I did the same thing with the three photos of the one the guy sent me. Go to images.goole.com and it will give you different sites you can use. I can't remember but I went into this one it started with a K. Anyways you can go into it and search each photo one by one. I had a Dr, and two other guys that show up on dating sites to scam women.

Keith it happened to me around the same time frame. Sent a pic of a handsome older.gentlemen who professed his love for me. And how pretty i was. It was elaborate also. But when he asked for money i reported him to the fbi. He contacted me and apoligized but i knew at that point that was a scam as well. I am lonely too so they prey on us single people. Taught me a lesson. I just wish i knew who the handsome man in the pic was

You really don't want to know who the handsome man in the photos is. I found out and mine was an International Italian model. I looked at his life thru all the women hanging on him for photo shoots and pictures of his current girlfriend and the beautiful clothes and huge bed and breakfast he owned and here I was sending someone money for plane tickets to get out of Africa and money for food. I wrote the real person and he wrote a quick note. Fake Photos/stolen. Sorry" I think I felt better before I knew as this guy would not give me a second look and guessing he was not into women anyway except having to do photo shoots with them???? Be careful what you wish for!!

Renee, I’m in contact with the same guy! We just had contact last night! He says his name is Eric...I have pictures...He says he is a civil engineer working in Canada right now, on a building project...Apartment buildings. I have been in contact with him since April of this year...He has blue eyes and white hair...Says he is 55 years of age, with two children, a girl and a boy...both in college, in Europe... He says he is Greek American...lives in Downtown, Los Angeles...homes in Union City, CA and Beverly Hills...says he’s trying to get back home to Los Angeles, but needs money to fix certain equipment that has broken down. Sound familiar? We need to exchange pictures and information to bring this guy down! Can we exchange contact information on this website?

Hi guys. Has any of you scarred men come across the name, Belinda Olsen, using the pics of Eva Lovia on Instagram? I have been doing some searches it's what little information I have gathered and always coming to a dead end. Before my help goes any further with this person I need to put my suspicions to rest. We did a video chat once in Hangouts but I can never hear her voice and the video was a bit scrambled. The first image of her show the face had great similarity to the pictures she showed me in Hangouts. I really do need to confirm if anyone is able to help me out there.
