Image of cupid and heartNot everyone using online dating sites is looking for love. Scammers create fake online profiles using photos of other people — even stolen pictures of real military personnel. They profess their love quickly. And they tug at your heartstrings with made-up stories about how they need money — for emergencies, hospital bills, or travel. Why all of the tricks? They’re looking to steal your money.

As if all that isn’t bad enough, romance scammers are now involving their victims in online bank fraud. Here’s how it works: The scammers set up dating profiles to meet potential victims. After they form a “relationship,” they come up with reasons to ask their love interest to set up a new bank account. The scammers transfer stolen money into the new account, and then tell their victims to wire the money out of the country. Victims think they’re just helping out their soulmate, never realizing they’re aiding and abetting a crime.

Here are some warning signs that an online love interest might be a fake. They ask you to:

  • chat off of the dating site immediately, using personal email, text, or phone
  • wire money using Western Union or Money Gram
  • set up a new bank account

Did you know you can do an image search of your love interest’s photo in your favorite search engine? If you do an image search and the person’s photo appears under several different names, you’re probably dealing with a scammer. And if the person’s online profile disappears a few days after they meet you, that’s another tip-off.

Here’s the real deal: Don’t send money to someone you met online — for any reason. If your online sweetheart asks for money, you can expect it’s a scam.

Unfortunately, online dating scams are all too common. There may be tens of thousands of victims, and only a small fraction report it to the FTC. If this happens to you, please report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

I accepted a Facebook F/R from a Brian Jackson at the beginning of July 18'. He told me he was given a link from a friend who met his wife on FB and they have been happily married for 10 years. Straight away he asked me talk to him through Hangouts so he could close his facebook account. So i did. He told me he was widowed with a 14 years old daughter who attends Richmond Elementary Private School and he pays a teacher Charlets accomadation fees while he is working away on the rigs. He is Swedish poseing as a Professional Contractor and owns his own home in Pulaski, Teneessee. He is a Romance Scammer and using photo's of a professional speaker named Marcos ???? with his daughter. Sends endless Romance Verses with pictures. He wants to move to the UK were the three of us can set up home an be one happy family for life or i was given the option of living in his home in Tenneessee. The last three weeks have been good and no questions of money until now. He tells me the ship he hired for the company he has his contract with has been damaged by a bad storm. Water has got into the engine and resulting in loss of lives. He feels so depressed about this as he is also responsible for the ships repairs.$ 25,000 to replace the engine and $5,000 for Technicians labour. He has asked for my assistance of $1,000. I refused and now he is asking for Itune cards to the value of $300 so he can upgrade his Macbook. I told him not to go there and refused any monies. So now its Game On! He has blocked me twice and feels i am making a fool of him. Quite Right! He's telling me his life is in great danger and i never loved him genuinely. He has unblocked me again. He will be back later and i will continue to play him at his own game.

He kept calling me all day long..Everyday..Then he asked for a certtificatefor a leave permit so he can leave Syria and vist me . He said that he wanted to have a business here and has funds for it so I can manage it. Of course I declined ..Refused...He insisted ..An I said NO. After that , he didn't call me ...I hope. I believe my brother is being scammed. He is a disabled adult and they have him believing they are about to sell an inherited company for 18 million. He thinks he was in love before this situation occured. Found out today he's been sending her money to hold her over until she gets her inheritence and then she's moving in with him. I've asked him to send her contact details so we can get friendly if he's that serious but I actually plan to use those details to put a stop to this. Any suggestions?

I've had two of these people. Both said their wives died, they send a photo with their kid, they say they're engineers on off shore oil rigs. Yes, they find you on Instagram then tell you to switch to the Hang out application...it's like they're courting you online but they skirt around questions I ask. They're very charming and romantic. I also had "Kid Rock" hitting me up. Block them all ASAP.

He's asked me for money for surgery for an ulcer, I said no and he keeps talking to me. He sent me a picture of him working and I did an image search and it's a stock photo you can get on the web. I had a guy called brian ryan ripley messaging me . Calling me cutie and saying he really fallen for me after a week .. he then asked me to buy him an amazing card I questioned it and he said his wife had died of breast cancer . His parents had died in a fatal accident . He's a us army man in North Africa. I asked him alot of questions and he didn't like it . He demanded pics of me which basically he was gonna use to blackmail me and say his fb was hacked and wanted money but I laughed at him and told him go ahead post pics of me I be glad of the likes . He wasn't happy with that . He sends a pic which isn't him in his uniform and one of him and his sister . But I confronted him about him not getting paid and not having access to stuff where he was and I sent him screen shots of the army wage and extras and in fact there's no base in North Africa. So please ladies be aware of this scammer . He don't give up easy either . He will also ask u to talk on hangout so he can get ur email address please do not do this and if u have spoke to him and you start getting messages from other named people trying to blackmail you do not open then just delete and block the person

ONCE IN TURKEY SHE SAID SHE NEEDED ME TO PURCHASE ITUNE CARDS FOR HER BECAUSE SHE NEEDED TO PAY HER VENDORS. I SAID NO. SHE SAID SHE WAS WORKING HARD TO GET HOME TO ME. SAID SHE WENT TO HOCK ALL HER JEWERLY AND ON THE WAY TO THE BANK WITH THE $5000.00 SHE GOT ROBBED. ANOTHER EXCUSE WHY SHE COULDNT GET HOME. A WEEK LATER SHE SAID HER CLIENTS IN THE STATES WAS HAVING A HARD TIME GETTING HER MONEY TO TURKEY AND ASKED IF IT COYLD BE ALL SENT TO MY HOUSE AND I COULD DEPOSIT THE MONIES INTO MY ACCOUNT AND I COULD PAY HER. AGAIN I REFUSED AND SAID WHAT KIND OF FULL DO YOU TAKE ME FOR? ANOTHER WEEK GOES BY AND SHE ASKS FOR ME TO PAY HALF OF HER PLANE TICKET TO COME HOME TO ME. I TOLD HER I WOULD BUY THE TICKET AND IT WOULD BE AT THE AIRPORT COUNTER. I KNEW I WAS BEING SCAMMED ALL ALONG, BUT I PLAYED ALONG. SHE SAID NO SHE HAS A TRAVEL AGENT AND SHE CANT TAKE MY TICKET BUT SAID TO SEND THE CASH. SAID HER VISA EXPIRED AS WELL SINCE SHES BEEN THERE SO LONG. IT HAD ONLY BEEN 30 DAYS SINCE SHE SAID SHE WAS FLYING THERE. VISAS ARE GOOD FOR 90 DAYS. SO MANY RED FLAGS. EVERY TIME I SAID I WAS TAKING A VACATION OR GOLFING THIS MADE HER MAD BECAUSE SHE SAID IF I WANTED HER WITH ME I WOYKD USE THAT MONEY TO GET HER HOME INSTEAD. PLEASE BE AWARE PEOPLE AND DATE SOMEONE WITHIN AN HOUR AT MAX FROM WHERE YOU LIVE.

I met a woman on pof goes by the name Rebekah Martins, Said she lives in Memphis, she immediately wanted to move the conversation to google hangout. On there, she is Rebekah Hope. I asked her to call me to prove who she was. She called with a very thick accent and I could hear a train station in the background and over the PA announcing next call. The announcer was foreign as well so I immediately knew she wasn't in the states. The phone number she called from was 636-742-1860. She started talking how much she loved me then started asking for money. Said she has no family and I'm all she has. It was one sob story after another. She would forget the lies she would tell me and then tell more lies to cover it up. These scammers need to get a real job. They spend their days and nights trying to rip us hard workers out of our money. I never gave her a dime and that made her mad each time I said NO!!!!!! I said the ticket will be waiting for you at the ticket counter at the airport. She said her visa expired and can't get here now. BEWARE OF REBEKAH MARTINS. She is a fraud and will try to suduce you. I TOO MET REBEKAH MARTINS ON POF. IMMEDIATELY SHE WANTED ME TO MOVE THE CONVERSATION TO HER GOOGLE HANGOUTS. SAID SHE LIVED IN TENNESSEE, BUT WAS LEAVING FOR BUSINESS TO TURKEY. WITHIN DAYS SAID SHE WAS FALLING FOR ME, AND WHEN SHE GOT BACK SHE WAS COMING STRAIGHT TO OHIO FOR ME. SAID SHE WAS GOING TO MOVE IN WITH ME AND JUST LEAVE HER APARTMENT AND BELONGINGS BEHIND. ONCE IN TURKEY, SHE WAS HAVING PROBLEMS GETTING MONEY TO HER. SAID SHE DID IMPORT AND EXPORT CLOTHING. ASKED ME FOR ITUNE CARDS, AND I SAID NO. SAID SHE WAS DESPERATE TO GET HOME TO ME AND WENT TO A PONSHOP AND SOLD OFF HER JEWERLY, ON THE WAY TO THE BANK WITH THE $5000.00 CASH SHE GOT ROBBED. YEAH RIGHT. SO NOW SHE WAS DELAYED COMING BACK. ASKED IF I WOULD SEND MONEY TO FLY HER HOME TO THE STATES, I SAID I WILL BUY YOUR TICKET AND IT WILL BE AT THE AIRPORT COUNTER. I WAS ONTO HER, SO I WONDERED HOW SHE WOULD TALK HER WAY OUT OF THIS. REBEKAH STATED SHE ONLY USES HER TRAVEL AGENT AND I COULD SEND THE MONEY TO HIM. ALSO SAID HER VISA EXPIRED BECAUSE SHE HAS BEEN TURKEY TO LONG. IT HAD ONLY BEEN 30 DAYS SINCE SHE SAID SHE WAS LEAVING FOR TURKEY. A VISA EXPIRES IN 90 DAYS NOT 30. SHE PROMISED WE WOULD TRAVEL THE WORLD AND SHE WAS VERY FINANCIALLY STABLE. HOWEVER, SHE CANT AFFORD A PLANE TICKET. SHE SAID I WAS ALL SHE HAS AND SHE WANTED TO BECOME PART OF MY BIG ITALIAN FAMILY. I ASKED TO TALK FACETIME WITH HER AND SHE REFUSED ONE EXCUSE AFTER ANOTHER. I WAS ONTO HER FROM THE BEGINNING. PLEASE DONT FALL FOR THIS LADY SHE IS NOTHING BUT A FAKE LIAR. GO GET A REAL JOB AND MAKE A REAL LIVING.

My story sounds a lot like yours. As a lesbian in the United States a Rebekah Hope Martins started talking to me. She wanted to move the conversation to her google hangouts. Said she worked on a computer all day and it would be easier for her to communicate with me. She said she was a US citizen living in Memphis, but her dad took her to Turkey at the age of 14. Said she graduated from Isatanbul University, Turkey. Rebekahs grammer proved otherwise. She said she was married to a man but was recently divorced because he cheated on her. She said she was always a lesbian and not sure why she married a man, which I thought was really strange. We talked for a few weeks texting on google, there would be long delays in her texts back. ALREADY, I was wondering about this person. I asked her to call me, it took a few days but she did, The accent was thick and I could hardly understand her. I ran the phone number she called from and it came back to a different name in Missouri. I kept playing her game at this point to see how long it would take her to ask for money. She started telling me we would marry soon and how much she loved me. Rebekah said I'm the love she has been waiting for. She said was going to get a tattoo of my initials on her ring finger, she forgot that she told me she hates tattoos. Suddenly, she had to take a business trip to Turkey, as she would only be there a week, its been 3 months now. Soon she asked for itune cards and I told her no because she needs to prove to me who she really is. I asked her to snap chat or face time with me and she got very defensive with me. She stated she doesn't need to prove anything to me, well you do when you want my money. I was going on vacation and asked for an address to send a postcard and she refused to give me an address. Now, I am single NOT dumb and desperate. It took another week and she said she got robbed in Turkey of $5000.00 cash and she now couldn't afford a ticket to come home to me. lol. Asked if she could start having personal checks sent to my house and I could deposit them into my account and pay her..... NOT HAPPENING. I told her I hired a private investigator and she isn't who she is saying she was and she told me to redo the investigation. She continued trying to get money from me, even after all the NO's I gave her. She gets an A for effort. The only person I give money to is my niece in college, so sorry REBEKAH MARTINS. There's a song out there "PLAYERS ONLY LOVE YOU WHEN THEY ARE PLAYING" and yes Rebekah this song is for you. Go get a real education so you can get a real job you POS. The phone number she calls from is 636-742-1860

I have some more info on this David, or Dav, Arnold. When pushed for a name for his company he said, get this, David Communications Inc. Here are the various excuses he laid out: --The company is private and therefore does not appear on the internet --Somebody else stole his Instagram pictures should they turn up elsewhere. --The kid is in boarding school, so no new pictures. --The usual lines about being a widower, world traveler, etc. Also, he's following about 2,000 other women, but my friend just won't believe that this is a scam. Has anybody come across this guy, so that I can show her it's bogus? Thank you.

We are arguing right now, the only way you can come here is if I can pay the taxes on the package. I am playing him along right now to see where this is going. From the previous comments, I believe that they are the same person. Has many names and many stories. I was scammed. His name he used was James Rogers Galbraith. Was shot in left leg while on patrol in Syria. Staff Sergeant, Special Forces. Has an adopted son, Peter or Prince in school in Tamale Ghana. Son injured and in hospital. Sent pictures to prove it. Asked for money all the time. Pics I was sent of him was of a Col. William S Galbraith. He even sent me a picture of a soldiers penis. Shocking. Madly in love with me and going to marry me. Went to Ghana, because of son and caught Malaria. This guy is good. Been at it for years. These scammers are evil. They are heartless and they can ruin your life if you allow it. Said he was born and raised in Miami, Florida. An inheritance of millions from his parents who died in a car crash. His father was a doctor and mother was a school master. Look out for this one. He speaks in broken English. I've made him mad before, he gets flustered. Played his game against him. I've prayed for him, because he is surely on a dark path to hell.
