Image of cupid and heartNot everyone using online dating sites is looking for love. Scammers create fake online profiles using photos of other people — even stolen pictures of real military personnel. They profess their love quickly. And they tug at your heartstrings with made-up stories about how they need money — for emergencies, hospital bills, or travel. Why all of the tricks? They’re looking to steal your money.

As if all that isn’t bad enough, romance scammers are now involving their victims in online bank fraud. Here’s how it works: The scammers set up dating profiles to meet potential victims. After they form a “relationship,” they come up with reasons to ask their love interest to set up a new bank account. The scammers transfer stolen money into the new account, and then tell their victims to wire the money out of the country. Victims think they’re just helping out their soulmate, never realizing they’re aiding and abetting a crime.

Here are some warning signs that an online love interest might be a fake. They ask you to:

  • chat off of the dating site immediately, using personal email, text, or phone
  • wire money using Western Union or Money Gram
  • set up a new bank account

Did you know you can do an image search of your love interest’s photo in your favorite search engine? If you do an image search and the person’s photo appears under several different names, you’re probably dealing with a scammer. And if the person’s online profile disappears a few days after they meet you, that’s another tip-off.

Here’s the real deal: Don’t send money to someone you met online — for any reason. If your online sweetheart asks for money, you can expect it’s a scam.

Unfortunately, online dating scams are all too common. There may be tens of thousands of victims, and only a small fraction report it to the FTC. If this happens to you, please report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

I've been chatting with one guy today whom I met in a dating site whose name in Sargeat Lucas Howard claimed to be a military soldier and was currently deployed in Syria. He rarely replied using his gmail account bcs of his hectic schedule, did not ask 4 money yet .But after fews days, he profess his undying love with poetic quotes on it. LOL. I wonder how could he felt that he is in love already for infact we didnt even talk that much. He sent 5 photos and tried to check on google image but did not find any similar photos. Could he be a real soldier and not a scammer??? If any one here is currently chatting with this guy, please let me know. Thanks much!

What does he look like? I met someone on coffee meets bagel. He's a medical doctor and he's from Sweden. I didn't feel right about it and then he wrote me a long letter. Wondering what yours looks like and what what's the email address that he sent you an email is. Also what his phone number is if you're texting. Sorry but if you're an MD and been going to school all of these years your English and grammar better be spot on

So i met this man on IG named Antonio Pellegrino, He said he had a contract in Norway and had been there 10 months and the contract is over feb 16, 2019 and he would be back in Texas. He said he have a son thats 10years old and he's a widow the wife passed giving birth. the son is supposedly in texas with the nanny. He's a italian with a raspy voice and very charming. always send photos in his suits. well he had me feel sorry for him by needing money to rent some equipment to complete the job so he wouldn't lose the contract. that was 1,500. then when the contract was over he was suppose to travel from norway to london threw to dfw. he even sent a half pic of a boarding pass showing the name. and then he said his bag was switch with a drug bag and was in a holding cell was released and missed his flight and needed money for a new flight. i sent 900.00 and he was supposed to land the next day. he was a no show. then he kept asking for i tune cards saying his phone is acting up. i brought 2 cards previously but he was very persistent for another card and that's when i google the i tune card scam. i didn't send the 3rd card another time i sent 800.00 that i couldnt afford. he went by the name of Antonio age 55 he sent a pic of a passport and a pic of his check from the contract claiming they wouldn't cash it down there because of documents. this man really had me going. sent me his marriage pic, and son pic. i feel so ashamed that i let my guard down. he even sent me a valentines day gift. ladies becareful because your heart can be your worst enemy.

Anyone knows Sergeant Lukas Howard?who claimed to be a US army whom I met in a dating site and was currently deployed in Syria. Didn't asked for money as he rarely replied using his gmail account & not his military email acct. He profess his love to me after 5 days of replying on his mail and he uses poetic lines and Godly words of wisdom. I just wonder how fast he fell in love for in fact we didn't even meet and talk that much. LOL. He even sent me his photos of him & tried to check it using image reverse search but did not find any similar photos. Could he be a real US soldier as he replied very seldom and no money involve yet or He could be a possible scammer??

I met another guy thru dating site & his name is Jason Samuel Parker, looks Arab guy with blackish beard but he is telling me that after his parents died in an accident his uncle took care of him that he is living in London and had a business (L&J building construction company-but not not under his name when searched in google) registered in California USA. He just broke up with his ex gf and took half of his money & run away 2 weeks before his wedding so he is looking for a faithful partner. He asked me to delete the dating site apps and asked me to chat on google hangout . He added me in his Facebook acct but it was just created w/o friends on his list and with only 1 photo. T'was Weird! After 2 days he deleted his acct as it was hacked as per him. Then he got robbed (mobile, laptop, including 10k USD cash) and he is telling of so many stories. Then told me about good news, a HUGE business deal, he got awarded a 1M USD contract in turkey for 3 mos. but he need a starting amount of 50k usd but because he got robbed he needs my help financially as he don't want to missed the chance & will give it back after he got paid. He sent me a copy of his contract / business registration and a copy of his US passport. I did an image reverse search & found out that all his documents including his passport copy were fake & photo-shopped. Told him he is a scammer that he cannot get any money from me and I'm not stupid & idiot to send him money at all. Then he kept on defending himself & he cannot do those things coz he loves me very much but I said to him to save his soul from satan and better to kill himself:) and I immediately blocked him and run away;)) Please be cautious ladies & gentlemen..

I’ve been getting girls follow me on IG and we get to talking, they want to quickly jump into a relationship and emphasize trust and honesty. They will talk to you and tell you everything you want to hear, it all sounds so good. Exchanging pics, even ask them to send a pic of waving hello and they will send it. Pretty soon the I love you starts flying out of her mouth, how much she wishes she was there with you right now, how great of a future you are going to have together. The last one said she was from Indiana and was in Nigeria on business, as she was a coffee bean distributor who sold her beans to Starbucks, even sent pics of the factory processing the beans, pics of herself in the hotel room, cab, and other places. Then soon enough she is having a horrible day! Her credit card was declined at the hotel and she can’t charge food on it and hasn’t eaten all day. Then said if I really cared for her could I wire her $350 so she could eat for the rest of the week because the credit card company was going to take 7 days to get her account handled properly because she was overseas! At this point I knew it was a scam so I thought I’d play along and have a little fun with her! Why not? Keep her busy so she couldn’t scam someone else. Sent her a pic of how much $ I had in checking, I moved $$ out so it looked like I only had $275. She asked if I would wire her $250! Said how am I supposed to live and get to work on only $25! She got upset and asked how much could I send her then? Said let me call my family and ask for money. Next day she asked if my family was giving me the money, said I left my mom a message and she didn’t return my call yet. She then said in all caps.... CALL HER AGAIN! At that point I told her I thought you cared for me and loved me,but all you seemed interested in was my money! Oh she got furious then! How could I say such a thing! We are going to spend the rest of our lives together and if I really cared for her I would send the money to her right this instant! Finally I had enough and told her you aren’t gonna scam me but nice try. She then said something horrible about my mother. My response was...... oh you really got me there! If you wanna try and hurt feeling, you should find someone who actually has feelings! She then blocked me on Instagram and I blocked her as well. I don’t care how much you say you love me and care for me I will never send or wire someone money that I met online! Be careful because I’m still getting followed by girls looking for money! Usually it’s a pretty girl with only 2-10 pics on her page, lots of guys following her but she will only follow about 1/2 the people that follow her. Dates on the pics posted are usually all on the same day or within a week from first post to last pic posted. A few comments on each pic from someone, but no responses from her. And they usually want to talk outside on Instagram, either email or WhatsApp. Be careful my friends! Don’t fall victim to these scammers. Feel free to ask me any questions cause they have tried to scam me often

I need help. I’ve been communicating with a Robert Kokholm from Denmark. He says he lived in Phoenix. But is in Austria on a job. We have been communicating for 6 months. He has never been pushy, very tentative. He has inherited money from his fathers death in Denmark and needs it for a settlement in his job in Austria. His attorney in the UK wants me to send $850. Tomorrow for attorney fees so they can take care of the paperwork, open up a account for me. Through there Turkey legal office. The inheritance is over a million dollars to be put in my name so I can in return pay his legal fee in Austria and get home to me, so we can go back to Denmark together. All sounds so good. I’ve gone through the attorney in the UK website. Everything looks good. He is so good. But I found this website tonight. I told him I wasn’t sure about sending my ID, address. And opening a bank account. I’m thinking I could get in some trouble, if this is money laundering. I don’t know. But I’m praying that someone else out there knows Robert Kokholm and can advice me.

I'm so glad I found this site. I think I've been scammed as well, by a woman calling herself Donna Renman. I 'met' her through a friend of hers on a dating website. She thought we'd be a perfect fit. I fell for it, my wife is cheating on me and I've been looking for someone new to fill my life. "Donna" came on pretty strong, expressing her love for me and that I was the one she had sought all of her life - even though we haven't met. Claims she's a gemologist, now on business in South Africa. She says her account is suspended because she tried to send money to an account that wasn't 'authorized' by her bank. To prove her bonafides she sent me her account number and password, and it does show a suspended account under her name with almost $10 million in it. She says she has to appear in person to get the suspension lifted, but she doesn't have the money for a plane ticket to get back, and wants me to send her $1000 for it - which she'll pay back, of course. I've resisted, saying I don't have that amount available (which is true). If this is a scam it's a very elaborate one.

I was contacted by this guy on a dating site for disabled people: My name is Gerald Koch Nelson (Gen), General in Command in the USA - UN/NATO Alliance(S Unit A091) currently in Syria for a peacekeeping mission , trying to make the world a better place especially for our children and the future generation. I was born on February 25, 1963 at Maryland Hospital of Maryland, USA, my father has an European descend from West Germany (North Rhine-Westphalia), Gelsenkirchen and I have been there a couple of times. I love my European descend and want to settle down one day with holidays in between USA and other countries. I started A & A Children Academy at 6 and later on continued from Calvary Baptist Church Schools. I joined the Military academy at the age of 16, rising through the ranks. I lost my wife of 14 years of marriage to an accident which caused my daughter's ill fate. I have an adopted son I love very much. I would be coming for vacation very soon. My last before I retire from my long decades of service to the Army. I hope this is a beginning of a nice friendship for many more to come , which I believe. Take care and read from you soon. Regards, Gerald. I’m positive he’s a scammer. Almost nothing adds up. The grammar is atrocious. His profile on the site is in German! I’ve reported him. Be careful! He contacted me and I responded with a short rather generic answer. I live in the same town with one of the biggest bases for overseas military activity. If you want his photos, pm me.

I belong to the LGBT community, I am transgender FTM. I had a translady contact me on tgpersonals.com, she claimed to be an America/Italian living in London getting ready to move back to the states to claim her late fathers inheritance. She went by Keira Elizabeth MacKinnon. We talked daily for almost 2 months, she would send me pictures all the time, even with her friends. I fell for the bank account/send me money scam. She kept saying she had to have a stateside bank account to put her inheritance money in. She is a very attractive person and she seems very sincere, until her "lawyer" Johnathan Smith deposited the first check and it didn't clear. She then became very hostile and mean. I ended up getting a call from the banks fraud department telling me about all the unknown activity that was happening with my newly opened bank account.

Hi! I have an elderly Aunt who was scammed by a man with the same name, his line was he was in the Marines in a ship off the coast of Nova Scotia, he had a 15 year old daughter, whose mother had died, and the daughter even sent her an email stating that she couldn't wait to meet her "Mother" she loved her and since she had been motherless for a long while, it was going to be wonderful to have a"Mom" My Aunt is a very gullible person, a widow who has health issues along with this. After much discussion with her (she lives out of state and she has 2 grown daughters in their 50's. who do not speak to her and want nothing to do with her, I somehow am her only contact, even though she is an Aunt from my Mom's brother who passed away 7 years ago. I still connect with her because of the no connection with her daughters and grandchildren. This "person" convinced her to send 3,000 which she did. Eventually she realized he was a scam, although she never got her money back. Now she is falling for another man? named Williams THomas, who claims to be in the UK in the military, he also wants money, she has just enough to get by now, she even called me asking if I could loan her money, I did not. She believes this "mans" story again, he has a son in the UK who corresponds with her, as did the other "daughter" from Dan Thomas. He wants a mother since HIS mother died a long while ago, can't wait to have a "MUM" even went as far as calling her "MUM" since he claims to be in the UK. She is falling for this again, and has called me a liar and she believes this "Man" I do not know what to do, since her daughters and family members do not speak to me either, since they are mad that I still correspond with their mom I could care less what they think of me, so do I need to contact the authorities, FBI or other agencies? She lives in another state and I cannot go talk to her. I have no phone numbers or email addresses of her daughters and really have no way of reaching either of them. Part of me wants to quit worrying about this, but I hate to see this happen to her again. She is in debt (not from him that I know of) but she has a car with car payments that is 2 months late, she is ready to sell her trailer and has had an offer on it. She is totally in belief that this "man" is the love of her life, he has promised her the moon, vacations to London, a new Mercedes, a home, and she even has asked me to be her "matron of honor" last guy, Dan Thomas, really was a jerk, he promised her a shopping trip to Tiffany's to pick out any diamond she wanted, a mansion, a new Mercedes etc. etc. Any advice? Thanks so much!

You might want to contact adult protective services workers in your aunt's city or county by checking on the Eldercare Locator. The Eldercare Locator is a public service of the U.S. Administration on Aging that will help you locate services for older adults and their families. You can also call to talk to someone at the Eldercare Locator at 1-800-677-1116.

People, these scam artists are using different names. So don't think he or she would use the same name. Mine was Collins Muriel. He said his wife died 3 years ago. He was raised by a Dutch woman and that's why he has a Dutch accent. His home base is Gray, TN. We've only been talking about 10 days via text and a gmail email. He was in love with me after only 3 days. Luckily, I caught on that what is too good to be true, probably isn't. Be careful out there and trust your instincts!

Lots of people on here are trying to identify scammers by sharing their names and pictures. However these scammers are liars. They have dozens of different names and pictures. Whether or not a name and/or picture matches makes little difference, because they're always using different ones, and they are all fake.

I think I have been scammed big time ! Started talking with this handsome man named Eric back 6 months ago first I needed to send to send $950 to send his diplomat here with his “box” well the man supposedly ended up in Turkey jail because he would not let the box be scanned and because I would not send $7000 for a special lock. Then he wanted me to send $350 to his daughter for glasses which I did then I sent 3000 for his airline flight which he then said his boss would not let him leave due to the troops that The President let leave, left him short handed then he had me send 4000 to get his vacation letter and then he said the boss wants a marriage certificate because he told him that we were married . Now he wants me to send 10,000 to get a marriage certificate. Stating he won’t get his retirement . When I told him I would not do this he is very angry . Plus he wants me to send him a 1200 cell phone. I am really scared especially about him pushing to get a marriage certificate. Can he do this? What do I need to do?

I started chatting to someone on words (scrabble). The name was Arnold Michael. I was suspicious from the start n he said he had lost all his family in a tragic motor accident five years ago apart from his grandson who was at boarding school. Said he was in petroleum n working on various oil rigs. Tried to get me to send money to his grandson for a trip saying he was on an oil rig and had lost his credit card. I refused but he still kept chatting n getting more romantic. Then he asked for money for an air ticket so he could get to see me. Again I refused saying I had no money. The last straw was when he begged me to get him an iTunes card so he could carry on chatting saying the internet was going down on the rig. By this time I had had enough n told him I knew it was a scam. He told me I needed a psychiatric evaluation. Told me was wealthy with two cars, lovely home in New York etc etc. I am 69 n he says he was 56. What would a 56 year old want with an almost 70 year old. It’s so easy to get sucked in. Ladies please be on ur guard.

Someone name Alex Roland I had contacted me from Instagram. He told me he's a doctor in the army and him from Texas. He lost his wife two years ago. His raising his 10-year daughter named Mary and she attended boarding school in Texas. He doesn't have anyone to take care of her. The reason why his daughter attends boarding school is that he travels a lot for his job. At first, we were communicating on Instagram for a short time then he asks me for my phone number, then I told him you don't even know me why you want to talk to me. He said I can communicate with you while am at work. At first, I didn't think anything of it. I was going through a breakup. Having a stranger to talk to about my boyfriend issue I didn't see anything wrong with that because I wasn't looking for a relationship. I started talking to him as a friend and he was giving me some good advice. In the middle of the conversation, he told me he loves me because am seem like a nice person. I was shocked when he said that. EHe said people can love someone in a week that's not strange. I saw the red flag I ignore it at the begin because I was so angry with my boyfriend. Everyone, he will text me a beautiful message, so that got me talking to him more so I had stopped paying attention to the red flag. Two weeks later he told me he had to go to Afghanistan the next day because there was a boom and some soldier got hurt and he had to go help taking care of them. I went online I google what he said but I didn't hear anything about it until I was watching the news they had mention something had happened in Afganistan. One week later he told me he got shot in his leg when he and his general went to visit the mister. I thought that was weird I question him about it. I called him a scammer he said am not here to scam you, am just a nice person talking to you and getting to know you because am looking for a new wife. So I let it go. A couple of days later he told me the present of Afghanistan compensate him by giving gold so he needs me to give him my address to mail to me so I can hold it for him. I told him no he starts getting mad. And sending me an angry text. I said don't you have friends in Texas ask them for help. He said no all my friends are soldiers and they are here with me. He kind of bully me so I gave him my work address because I know they go through everything that comes to their premises. He told routnet express is coming to relieve his parcel so I google the company it was a fake company. I copy the information I find about the company. So he stops talking about it than he asks for $800.00 to get his parcel to me I said I don't have any money. Then he starts calling me selfish I don't want to help him. I told him I have a friend who works for the government if he wants his parcel that bad let me see if he can parcel and he told me not to tell anyone about this. So I start Google his name and his email address I couldn't find anything. The picture he sent me was fake. It was somebody else pictures. He keeps asking me for the money and I told him I will ask my friends and I came back to him I said everyone said no and that's when he start sending me nasty text because I won't send him any money. So I cut all communication with.

I have this guy whose in the marines , deployed to syria, telling me he is in love with me , etc. He wanted my number to be part of his email verification, i said no. He supposedly had a medical issue, and i had another marine text me that he was in the hospital. Then he said he lost his pouch which had his credit card in it. And is asking for my account information so he can get his money because they cant send overseas, and he has to pay for his ticket to come home. I was not buying that as I am an ex military spouse.. And people wonder why a lot of people.have trust issues.
