Image of cupid and heartNot everyone using online dating sites is looking for love. Scammers create fake online profiles using photos of other people — even stolen pictures of real military personnel. They profess their love quickly. And they tug at your heartstrings with made-up stories about how they need money — for emergencies, hospital bills, or travel. Why all of the tricks? They’re looking to steal your money.

As if all that isn’t bad enough, romance scammers are now involving their victims in online bank fraud. Here’s how it works: The scammers set up dating profiles to meet potential victims. After they form a “relationship,” they come up with reasons to ask their love interest to set up a new bank account. The scammers transfer stolen money into the new account, and then tell their victims to wire the money out of the country. Victims think they’re just helping out their soulmate, never realizing they’re aiding and abetting a crime.

Here are some warning signs that an online love interest might be a fake. They ask you to:

  • chat off of the dating site immediately, using personal email, text, or phone
  • wire money using Western Union or Money Gram
  • set up a new bank account

Did you know you can do an image search of your love interest’s photo in your favorite search engine? If you do an image search and the person’s photo appears under several different names, you’re probably dealing with a scammer. And if the person’s online profile disappears a few days after they meet you, that’s another tip-off.

Here’s the real deal: Don’t send money to someone you met online — for any reason. If your online sweetheart asks for money, you can expect it’s a scam.

Unfortunately, online dating scams are all too common. There may be tens of thousands of victims, and only a small fraction report it to the FTC. If this happens to you, please report it at ftc.gov/complaint — click on Scams and Rip-Offs, then select Romance Scams.

I've been talking to a man from a dating site through email. He uses the name of Mark David Lee . He claims to be a self employed Contractor , with a Company named Empoint Construction . I've already found out that there in no such company . He claims to be in Dubai working on a contract job now . He said he froze his bank account before leaving the states . Now he is saying that he has to pay taxes on the money upfront before they will pay him on completion of the job . He said his daughter sent him $30,000 and he has paid $ 75,000 out of the money he took with him over there . He said he still needs $50,000 , and asked if I could send him the money , and he would pay me back double when he comes home . I know he is a scammer because I've already caught him in several lies , but he has tried to lie his way out of them . Now he is wanting me to let his bank manager transfer funds out of his account and into mine so that I can send him the money . He must think that i'm the biggest fool that ever walked this earth ! I told him there was no way in H - - - I would ever give out any of my personal information to anyone that I have never even laid eyes on , or even know that he is the man in the pictures that I am talking to in writing . I told him he could be Joe Blow on the street corner as far as I know . I told him to send me a copy of his Drivers License , and a copy of his passport , his Social Security number and Bank Account number , so that I could have him checked out . Guess what ??? I haven't heard back from him !! Remember the name : Mark David Lee

Warning Latin woman
July 26, 2018
I am a latin woman so i apologize if my English is not perfect. Last month I have been talking with a guy called Victor Morrison. He looks like a gentleman, is from England, is working with UN in Yemen, he is in charge of medical and food supplies. He is 39 (although he looks a little older), is bald, with a nice gray beard and always wear elegant outfits in different parts of world and all his photos are selfies. He has a tragic story, his parents and pregnant wife died on 9-11 after that he married again with a woman who cheated him. After that (2009) he has been alone in the world and only focused on his work. Due he lives in a war zone he cannot show me his camera and his facebook is closed. He fell in love since the third day we chat (even he could not remember my name…) and he is allways polite, respectful, and believes in God. His tragic history was unbelievable but I wanted believe it. His behavior causes me suspice: He stops conversations suddenly (he has unexpected calls or emergencies), when I try to talk about the places he visited he never give me details, always wanted more pics (I just sent him some regular ones), he mixed the names of his wives and when I search for the pics on web I could discover two of them don’t belong to the places he mentioned. Anyway I continue talking with him, because it was a good way to practice my English, but he was desperated to meet us, marrying me ( he called me his wife) and live together in my country and run a business here. He needed request his vacations and he needed I help him with the paperwork. I said yes, I can but he suggested I should help him with money for the legal paperworks and tramits because it is complicated asking for vacations in a war zone. I got angry and I suggested he was a scammer and he was very hurt and sad for my accusation. I wanted to know more and finally I write to the address he sent unitednationsofficeforvacation@ protonmail. ch and Identified as his girlfriend (he said I should write I was his wife). The domain of mail is a super secure mail used by big enterprises. They replied the same day in a very formal letter but they needed my personal data to start the process of vacations. Due this I spend more time in the net looking for the photos and I found another profile with other name (Nelson) in other site and a facebook profile with only 12 women as friends. Almost all were latin women and I discovered one close to my city, I write her and we shared information. She was not yet in the mail stage, but the pics he use or talks or stories where the same. When I confronted him, he stopped talking me. I just hope the pics I sent don’t be used for scammers.

I have been having a conversation of several weeks with a man I met on Twitter. I have done my due diligence and done a google image search on every photo he has sent me, with no results. Must be new to the game. Says he is a Dr. stationed with the US Army in Syria. Widowed, with a daughter he never talks about. He wants mt to help him pay for a leave so he can come back to the US and we can be together. He first asked me to send him my credit card information and I absolutely refused. The he started talking about bitcoin and I told him I know nothing about it. Now he wants me to open an account for him at a bank so he can transfer money into it for me to pay for the travel expenses associated with his leave. I don't intend to do it. I know it is a scam, but I can't seem to break away.

In reply to by Mel

My husband is military 20 years. There are no bases in Russia. Commanders cannot ask their subordinates for money. Military leave is done by orders, not money. The service men asks for leave, it gets approved, stamped orders, done deal. Every military member in the US gets two days of leave a month accumulated. As long as you have leave, and there is no deployment requirements, you are usually approved. Just as yourself if you, at a company, requested vacation, would your boss require you pay HIM $1400.00 to let you go? That's called extortion, and against US law. Military law is even stricter. How can you fall in love in days with someone you have valid doubts about? They are scammers praying on your emotion. Love yourself more and tell this scammer to take a hike!

Brian Andreas Lukas says he is from Texas, and other states, an Architect, 60 years old, birthday 16 June, is scamming the ladies again, this man is on LinkedIn, on catfish, was taken off OK Cupid for impersonating, his email is or was blksa016 @gmail. com, telephone number in the us +1 650 435 7564 and in Turkey +90 548 878 4421. Ladies compare your notes and see what numbers you have, did you also get sent the contract for the Hotel to be renovated in Turkey - that certificate is a FAKE. Ask him to Skype you, he will say he does not skype. Tells you it is Brian and ......... forever, etc... etc. so convincing it is frightening. say that you are his wife. Calls on hang out day and night, sends poems off the internet, songs off Joox, you think you have met the one and only... BE AWARE he has been doing this for years. Sends about 8 pictures of himself (or maybe it is somebody else). He even tells you he has a translator in Turkey. Ask him to produce his passport - he cant do this. ask for any form of ID, he tells you it is with his translator for his work permit to be "extended". I just cant believe that somebody can keep getting away with this.

Hi everyone! Unfortunately, I was taken for a ride myself; I went on a dating website since you cannot have a conversation with anyone in real life because everyone is looking down on their phones so I figured I would do a dating site and boy oh boy... call me 'SUCKER" because I was all caught up in stories of women's parents/husbands/boyfriends/Siblings dying and they were all alone; attractive women quick to send a picture of themselves and within two days, already fell in love with me and want to spend the rest of their lives with me and marry me and blah, blah, blah! Now, everyone posted that they were stateside on their profiles but when the texting began, they were either in GHANA or NIGERIA...working with UNICEF or WHO (World Health Organization) but needed money for medical expenses, new phones, laptops, or phone cards so they could keep in touch with me or else they will lose service and we will lose contact...we would meet on Hangouts and the funny thing about that is I was able to disable the alert that shows when I was on or available so they couldn't see when I was on but I could tell when they were on and weren't talking to me! And they needed monies either through iTunes or Amazon cards or the traditional Western Union or Money Grams...it was heartbreaking because they all sounded so sincere and I'm so ready to love and be loved and now it seems like a fantasy at this point...I cancelled Hangouts and I'm just done with how people could be so malicious, conniving and evil to take advantage of someone who just wants to be with someone and enjoy life together? God bless you all for sharing and at least I know I'm not alone on this.

If its any consolation ladies it goes both ways. Have had a rash of young women hit me up on FB to friend me. ( Name ) single for some days, want to meet you. Do you want? Click and then press (with a youtube link) Karina ,Terri, Lauren, Janet, Anne, Holly, Andrea ,Jennifer. All on same FB page. All have that mid to late 20s Russian bride look. What could they possibly want with a 61 year old man? Other than a sugar daddy. Or to increase traffic to their youtube video. Has posts from 1986 Born August 3 1986. My daughter is older than that. And no I'm not in the service or work on an oil rig or need anyone to send money. Some of your comments sound like a twist on the old Nigerian letter scam. Bill

Had a couple guys try to scam me on FB. Which they didn’t get far like a couple days. Using the oil rig story and boarding daughter bs line. Now last night some guy on LinkedIn called Steve Wortman. Works in Syria as a physio therapist with the UN. His wife died and had my same name and he has no children. I chatted with him via linked for about 30 minutes. One key, is a huge response with not enough time to write it. Copy and paste. I played along and gave him an old email. I awoke with an email so over the top, I copied and pasted into google and that is how I found this site. I block him on LinkedIn and wrote back to his email telling him I didn’t appreciate his BS letter and told him to get a real job. Ladies, I met my husband in 1999 online. He moved heaven and earth to get me to London which were I lived for 16yrs. No man worth a grain a salt would ask a women for a dime.

A man contacted me through OK Cupid. He says his name is Mark Stanley. His English is such that I can tell it is not his "mother tongue" and he texted "Alaya" and just ignored me when I asked what that word meant. After talking via text, very bland conversation I may add, he started telling me that "he felt he had known me a long time" and that I "reached his heart". My gut tells me he is a scammer, but I do not know if I am simply being suspicious since I was burned pretty bad by a scammer who called himself "Henry Adam." He sent me a link to his FB which said he had established the page in 2011 but there are very few photos and few friends listed. Has anyone heard of a scammer named Mark Stanley who says he is from Jacksonville, North Carolina?

on FB, a new trick. Nigerian scam. A very handsome man contacted me, his profile was 8 years old, everything looked very real. James Becker. When we talked, he avoided answering. I searched the internet and found the right photo owner. They are copying real profiles! Attention! Be careful! I patiently waited when he asked for money and then I blocked everything. The profile was canceled but the next day was a new profile with photos and history since 2012. So I tracked them, profile canceled. In two days a new profile, again the same photos, I reported it. I contacted the right person with his profile being copied. They are really stupid, but I'm not! Never ever please believe these sweet stories! Find the information.

I am not feeling very blissful. Actually, I feel really ignorant for falling for a scammer. I was contacted on Facebook. My guy had a profile but had also posted on a page for dog lovers. He said he was from NY and worked for a Catholic charity that would soon be going to Nigeria to do charity work. We kept in touch constantly while he was in Nigeria. I fell for his scam hook, line, and sinker. I chose to ignore the obvious signs. I was truly in denial. Finally it reached a point where it was getting totally ridiculous. So I finally came to my senses but was hurt to the core. Plus, I couldn't believe I fell for it. Does anyone know of any way to identify the people whose profiles have been stolen and used by these criminals. I hate to think that people don't know this is happening to them.

I met 1 month ago a guy by the name of Thomas muller, 1 child Sarah, in boarding school, parents murdered when he was 6, talked every day, wants to come to Holland after his retirement, but now he needs to go on a dangerous mission and wants me t help him with his replacement, and told me that this costs money but he didn't want to go a that mission because it was too dangerous and only I can help him Now I send an email to the general, got one back, asking for his code number, I send it back but now they want a copy of my passport, I am in doubt if I will send it, I made a safe copy, not showing my number and playing the game further, of course 1 procent I hope he is still the man I fell in love with but all these stories I am. Almost certain I have been scammed and that hurts. I also talked by mail with his daughter and immediately she called me mom, I asked him the name of the school but he has not given it to me..... Is somebody else who also had contact with this man, this name?
