Image of cupid and heartNot everyone using online dating sites is looking for love. Scammers create fake online profiles using photos of other people — even stolen pictures of real military personnel. They profess their love quickly. And they tug at your heartstrings with made-up stories about how they need money — for emergencies, hospital bills, or travel. Why all of the tricks? They’re looking to steal your money.

As if all that isn’t bad enough, romance scammers are now involving their victims in online bank fraud. Here’s how it works: The scammers set up dating profiles to meet potential victims. After they form a “relationship,” they come up with reasons to ask their love interest to set up a new bank account. The scammers transfer stolen money into the new account, and then tell their victims to wire the money out of the country. Victims think they’re just helping out their soulmate, never realizing they’re aiding and abetting a crime.

Here are some warning signs that an online love interest might be a fake. They ask you to:

  • chat off of the dating site immediately, using personal email, text, or phone
  • wire money using Western Union or Money Gram
  • set up a new bank account

Did you know you can do an image search of your love interest’s photo in your favorite search engine? If you do an image search and the person’s photo appears under several different names, you’re probably dealing with a scammer. And if the person’s online profile disappears a few days after they meet you, that’s another tip-off.

Here’s the real deal: Don’t send money to someone you met online — for any reason. If your online sweetheart asks for money, you can expect it’s a scam.

Unfortunately, online dating scams are all too common. There may be tens of thousands of victims, and only a small fraction report it to the FTC. If this happens to you, please report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

I believe I may have been talking to the same guy as he fits the description. Calls himself Kelvin Gary although he's been using about 20 other names as I've just found out from other sites. Claims he's a widower and has an 18 year old daughter studying at cardiff unitversity. Alarm bell rung after he delared his undying love for me just after two days of chatting. So I looked up the picture he gave me and it turned out several women from different countries may have been scammed by him. The pattern that I'm noticing is that they seem to be joining Fitbit Communities, recruiting victims from there and bringing luring them to Google hangouts or WhatsApp to scam them. I'm currently chatting with another romance scammer who thinks I'm unaware of who he is... lol.

Don't give him anything and the military will take care of him. Just talk to him like a friend and expect him to arrange transportation to meet you. IF he does not he was a fake move on.

The guy who tried to scam me talked to me for 5 months before asking for money! (Phone calls, short videos, texts, WhatsApp and Hangouts). Even said he’d come to Canada to visit me. Then he got mad and aggressive when I wouldn’t give him any money. Even refusing to take my calls

Sounds like Fred Maupin contacted me on Words with Friends claims to be Orthodepic Surgeon in US army based in Pakistan. Claims he's being posted to Afghanistan unless he puts in for special leave which will cost USD4,000-00. I've been stringing him along for 3 weeks now saying I'm trying to get it but also started asking questions about the military base which he can't answer

Fred Maupin contacted me through Words with Friends too same story orthopedic surgeon for the US Army based in Pakistan (in a dangerous war zone). He said he was from California. It took him a week to ask me for a gift card to pay for a test that he was needing to take. An orthopedic surgeon asking for a gift card to take a test... give me a break! As soon as I told him I couldn’t help him. He cancelled out our game & got out of our friends group. Ladies please BEWARE of this scammer!!

In my version the scammer is Reed Adams, Patrick McCoy, Jorge Gaston, Paul J David, Demetrio Lopez, Jack Johnson, Joseph Olymp, etc. All of the marine engineers working on oil rigs across the high seas... I am in oil business. These guys know about oil rigs. Using different pictures of the Brazilian doctor Fernando Gomes Pinto. Actually, I think this is a whole team of scammers. The texts differ hugely in style and grammar. They write in English, Spanish and French. Similarities: widowers, son/daughter in a boarding school, all US citizens, some Australian ... All ask for huge bucks :))) There are few doctors also...

I am also talking to a guy that I met on IG. says his name is Dave Lucas(dav_elucas) Extremely attractive. says he's 40 and is a doctor working for the UN on a contract in Poland. Says he has a daughter named Zoe who is off in school somewhere. Said he was born in South Africa and lived in Chicago for 10 years while studying to be a Dr. Said his dad died when he was 7 and his mother died recently. He has told me that he loves me way too soon. Wants to spend the rest of his life with me. I have several pictures of him. NOw he wants me to send him a Google gift card because he claims he needs to pay for a wifi connection. He also told me his ex-wife cheated on him and they are now divorced and she is pregnant with another man's child. We've spoken many times on the phone through the hangout app. and video chatted once. He has a severe accent. Does this sound familiar to anyone?
