Scammers are trying to get personal information from people by pretending to help with applications for disability benefits and claims. A recent alert from the Social Security Inspector General warns of this phishing scam, and — whether or not you’ve started an application for benefits — these scammers could contact you. They’re taking a shot in the dark, hoping that you have started an application, and hoping you’ll give them a little more info over the phone. To “complete the process,” they might ask you to give, or confirm, your Social Security number or bank account numbers.

If scammers get your information, you could face identity theft and benefit theft. So here are a few things you can do to help protect yourself:

  • Never give your Social Security number or account numbers to someone who calls you.
  • Don’t wire money or send money using a prepaid debit card. In fact, never pay someone who calls out of the blue.
  • If you have disability benefits, regularly check their status, and review your statements to make sure they’re right.

If you have questions about disability benefits, or get calls offering help with them, call the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213. And read up on more ways to combat phishing and identity theft.

June 10, 2019
They are calling our cell phone numbers. We return the call through our ground line. They call themselves, "National Disability". We have asked them repeatedly to not call. They have a system by which they just use another phone number many times at least once per day. Many phone numbers they use are long distance for us, but then I have a written record from my ground line phone bills include all long distance so we can track them. I told them I would be reporting them to the Federal agencies for scam, fraud, and abuse. They also call from numbers that are not valid. When I attempt to call the numbers which are many times cell numbers, Verizon says that the number is not a valid phone number. We now will not answer phone numbers we do not recognize. Very annoying.

I never answer unknown numbers, but I will call back if they call more than twice the same day. The number below is from a "National Disability" and I know it must be a scam. 423-205-6018

And I cut them off and hung up on him to take a call from my local Social Security office who is returning my call . I reported this to my local Social Security office

I have been getting calls from national disability for the past two weeks asking if, they can speak to me. I didn’t give out my name or personal information. They called me by name and I said that person don’t have this number anymore. The man wanted to know who was he talking to I threw a name out to him. When I asked what was the nature of him calling he confirmed that he was from social security administration and was here to help me get my disability. The number is 9106006828. They constantly calling every three minutes.

I tried calling the SSA number to report a scam call, That number was NOT working correctly and I had to call the regular SSA number and TRY to report the info. Numbers they used to call me were 270 232-2250 and 617 996-8876. I have never received a call like this until I called SSA to start a claim for SS disability. This tells me they have one or more employees stealing MY info and selling it to the scammers

Been getting calls from Pete at National Disability wanting to help me with my application. I Googled the two phone numbers that he called from, 360-787-9750 and 360-234-3449, and got nothing. He left high-pressure messages about helping with my application but calls a lot. Obvious scam.

I received a call from some very articulate women to help create a false sense of security. They said that I had recently applied for SS disability, and I said no, and she suddenly hung up. For giggles, I called back and another 'lovely' person started asking a lot of questions and she said she was from National Security. I asked if that was a company and she repeated herself so I asked for the URL and she hung up. The number was NJ - 201-579-5039. They got my number from a job board. WATCH OUT!

I keep receiving phishing calls from numbers that mimic my cell phone number. The caller identified himself as "Pete from National Disability" and wanted to help me complete my application for disability benefits. He left a phone number to call: 617-996-8876. Obviously this is a scam. Please do not fall for this deception.

What would help this from happening to consumers is make funds available to those of us that are going through the SSDI process and have a real claim. We're selling everything to keep above water and still have 7 months until our hearing.

i know there are lots of scam out there and we have to be careful... but i can say that i have 4 friends who have tried numerous times to get SSDI and failed and decided to try the calls gotten calls from National Disability where they asked bunch of Yes and No questions after which they were transferred to a specialist and today they are getting their benefits ...know that which is legit.. many suffer in silence and those calls have given them hope... especially those that cant afford lawyers to help them with their claim.. they only get paid after they won the cases of my friends

614-845-6396. Just called. Left the following message, calling because you had inquired about applying for monthly social security disability benefits. If you could call me back as soon as you can at 617-996-8876. We can get started on your application for monthly disability money. This is a time sensitive matter faster action is required for these types of social security benefits. So if you're already receiving social security benefits. Feel free to ignore this call. Just had a call from Peru. Knew what it was but answered anyway to go off on them. Guy said his name was "Moses" and had my name and said he was to help me with my disability and if I was working. I said I did not have a disability and asked who he was and how he got my info. He paused for a long time and said he was a "researcher" and was getting information to "match" me with a benefits person for disability. I started going off on him and asked again for his information and how he got mine. He said "Moses" and he was with "Independent something something." He had my information for disability and needed me to verify and give him more so he could match me with someone. I said no and that I go to the VA and did not apply for any "disability". The number was 51 2860119.
July 26, 2019
received one of these calls from 816-354-0904 saying want to see if I apply for disability benefits. I never applied for them.
July 26, 2019
So how do we get them to actually stop calling. They call about 5 times a day using all kinds of different numbers so you can't report them. It is super annoying.
July 29, 2019
Somebody claiming to be from dissabily services to help me get signed up for S.S. I could not tell for sure if it was a real thing because there is a dissability services in a town nearby. That's the problem, there are so many telemarketers from outright scammers to legit companies offering services we don't need. It does not matter, I talk to them all. Iget as much info as I can about them and pass it along to the proper authorities. I also give them my info, all fake. I keep them on the line as long as possible. Waiting thier time so they can't get ro an actual sucker, some gullable senior. II went from hating to enjoying these calls. If more people talked to the telemarketers instead of wring blogs the telemarketers could not find enough suckers and telemarketing would dry up and blow away. Talk to them it is your civic duty.

(626)325-0645 Just another "National Disability" scam number I thought I'd enter here. Have called these people more than 3 times asking to be removed from their call list, but have yet to stop receiving calls.
August 02, 2019
Every time these people call, my caller ID says Scam Likely, so I never answer. And I ignore the messages they leave.
August 02, 2019
Hey FTC how can we stop these calls? Obviously they aren't stopping. I have gotten a call once a week for 3 weeks now. I have them on block but they can leave a voice email. My calls are coming from the same number of 440-482-8766 and to call 617-996-8876. I would not be surprised if these low life scums are also calling from these other local numbers to my area. I am sure they are preying on those seniors who have no clue they are scammers.
August 02, 2019
I get numerous calls each day (no voicemails) saying I'm being recorded and its Amber from National Disability. I say don't record me, don't call again and take me off you list. Then I block that number. Its from 720 in Colorado. Then another 720 number calls and its the same thing. One time I talked to an Amy. Such a waste!!

6179968876: recording from" Pete" from national disability. Says I have inquired about social security benefits. (Not a chance I was doing that because I already collect SSD).
August 08, 2019
I got a call from 913-347-7298 saying United States as the caller ID. I answered the call. The woman said that she has seen that I have applied for social security disability. I have not applied for anything like that. So its a scam phishing for doing identity theft. They keep using us for cheating us and stealing from everyone.

August 12, 2019
Here’s a new scam number from National Disability. They called and she got as far as giving my her name, (Ashley) then hung up. Naturally I keep calling to jam up the phone lines. Here’s the number they are bouncing around, 808 374-8166.
August 13, 2019
"Pete", who claimed to be with National Disability, called to help me submit for Social Security disability, although he never used my name when leaving the message. Plus, I'm not eligible for disability. The number showed up as a local number, not the 617-996-8876 number he said to call him back on. Nothing but a scam.
