Looking to start a new relationship? For some, that may mean meeting a new love interest online. Word to the wise: sometimes it’s best to lead with your head and not your heart.

Millions of Americans use dating sites, social networking sites, and chat rooms to meet people. And many forge successful relationships. But scammers also use these sites to meet potential victims. They create fake profiles to build online relationships, and eventually convince people to send money in the name of love.

The Federal Trade Commission receives thousands of reports each year about romance scammers who create fake online relationships only to steal their victims’ money.

Unfortunately, an online love interest who asks for money is almost certainly a scam artist.

The FTC’s new infographic, developed with the American Bankers Association Foundation, lists common signs of online dating scams and what to do if someone you meet online asks you for money.

Below are some tips to identify a real romance versus a scammer cruising for a target.

Online Dating Scams. Has an online love interest asked you for money? That's a scam. Scammers know millions of people use online dating sites. They are there, too, hiding behind fake profiles. Signs of a scam: Professes love quickly. Claims to be from the U.S., but is overseas for business or military service. Asks for money, and lures you off the dating site. Claims to need money — for emergencies, hospital bills, or travel. Plans to visit, but can’t because of an emergency. $220 million lost in 2016. $56 million lost in 2012. Reports to the FBI tripled over 5 years (4,476 reports in 2012; 14,546 reports in 2016) What to do: Slow down — and talk to someone you trust. Don’t let a scammer rush you. Never wire money, put money on a gift or cash reload card, or send cash to an online love interest. You won’t get it back. Contact your bank right away if you think you’ve sent money to a scammer. Report your experience to: • The online dating site • Federal Trade Commission: ftc.gov/complaint • Federal Bureau of Investigation: ic3.gov. Learn more at ftc.gov/imposters and aba.com/engagement

Please share this information with others. Victims may be embarrassed to talk about their experiences, but you can help. A simple phone call, email or text, saying “Look what I just found” and sharing this information may make a difference in someone else’s life.

He has sent me many gifts, one that had a different name than his. So names don't add up and he isn't answering me when I ask him.. He has not asked me for anything, but we have only been talking for a few weeks. I would love to exchange pictures. IS there a way?

Beware of a man named Tony Briggssen who I met on a dating site. Asked me to "do a favor" for him by buyng a $25 iTunes gift card for his grandsons birthday. (He claimed to be in a meeting all day and couldn't go get it himself) Said he would give me the money when we met for our first date. But he wanted me to scratch the card and give him the code on the back. I repeatedly refused and eventually won out.

Met a guy on the weight loss app "Loseit". His name is Dy Not on there which is short for Dylan Newton. His story: 45, lost his wife to cancer, two kids, deployed Colonel in the US Army. On his last deployment before he retires in 2021. Stationed in Iraq. His kids are named Esther 13, and Alex 10. They are in boarding school. He didn't get the opportunity to ask me for money because I sent his pic to my family who works in Homeland security and was warned of "Romance Scams" and to not engage. I was already two weeks into conversation on WhatsApp andI called him out and blocked him. He contacted me on the Loseit! app saying I was wrong and that he would NEVER ask me for money so I unblocked him on WhatsApp and said that's fine but I would never be dumb enough to send $ to him. He said ok and we agreed to be friends. the next morning, I woke up with 10 fraudulent purchases on my bank account. I never gave him anything accept the basic stuff you say when you're getting to know someone. name, age, state i live in and I was somehow hacked!!! Be careful!! I wish I just listened to my uncle and disengaged. I have no idea how he ( or they) did it or if it was just one HUGE COINCIDENCE!! LESSON LEARNED.

A woman named Sandra Gibbish friended me on Facebook professing her love. It hasn't been a week and she asked for a Amazon card for food for her daughter. I was suspicious but I had only 40 bucks Canadian so why not. She says she lives in Tennessee. 15000 in debt to her police officer landlord and has 2.5 mil inheritance but only by her fiance as per her deceased father s wish can claim it. So she want me to have 2 locked boxes shipping from UK and me to pay to get it here. Inside is 2.5 mil and other assets. She says she is 1 year divorced from a husband named Michael Calderon. Anybody hear anything familiar?

I've been chatting to an overseas guy online who I met through Scrabble. He is an engineer, very attractive and charming. He has been seducing me with kind words, hot photos and poetry. Recently he has been asking for Google cards and money. Always a big story as to why he can't access his accounts and why he needs the money. I have said no, I don't have money and then he tries to blackmail me emotionally with comments such as if I care I would send the money, I'm all he has, he loves me etc etc.... I smell a con

Steven jerry thomos is a scammer. He also goes by the name steven Morgan. Says that he is the captain on a cruise ship in spain.wife died in an accident about 5 years ago and his 14 year old son is in a boarding school. He fell in love with me in two days and talking about everlasting love and that we would be together forever. He then asked me how did I feel about partners in a relationship helping each other out financially. I said that it depends on the kind of relationship they had. He then ask me to get on hangout so we could talk without interruptions. I did. But when I got on Hangouts he ask me to go to Walmart and get a gift card for $400 to help him pay for some sort of subscription. Too Good to be True
December 03, 2020
I have read all the comments on this site. I have a similar situation. I meet this charming man via Facebook on September 4, 2020. First day we chatted on messenger for 7 hours. It was too good to be true. Then he suggested we chat on Google Hangouts. Once we started on Hangouts I went back to Facebook and he had removed his profile/account. When I asked about it he said his account was hacked. This charming man claims to be Christian Bryant Anderson, widow with a 15 yr old son named Frank. His wife died 7 years ago from Leukemia. He was born in Frankfurt Germany where his parents still live. His son and him live in Dallas Texas. He started telling me that he loves me right away, about 2 weeks in. About another week or so he proposed to me and sent me a video of an engagement ring he so called bought for me. He sent me all kinds of love notes and told me everything I ever wanted to hear a man say to me. He sent me all kinds of pictures, even one with his son. September 17 was Frank's 15th birthday and Christian stated that he would love a Google play card. I told him that I would just wait until I see him in person to get him a gift. Then in mid October he tells me that one of the machines on the rig broke and he needed to try and get the money together for the parts. Stated that he paid for half of it but needed the rest. Asked me for $50k. I laughed at that notion. If I had that kind of money I would not be living in an apartment, I would have my own house. Then he went down to $2k. I never sent him any money, but he is still persistent. I spoke with him just this morning and he is now stating that he is stranded on the platform because he has no money for his flight home. He asked me to see if I could get a loan. Of course I am not going to do that. Its been 3 months since we started chatting and I have been having my guard up the whole time. I really thought he was legit. Yes, it's nice to have someone tell you what you want to hear, but you need to be careful. Ladies PLEASE don't ever send money to anyone you don't really know. We work too hard for what we have.

If I could just give you a bit of advice, whenever you're chatting with someone online whom you've never met, start asking them questions. For instance, I had a woman contact me from the Philippines. She didn't start asking for money right away, but she said she was an art dealer. I said oh I love art and visit museums all the time what kind of art do you deal with? She responded sculptures, so I began to ask her from what period of art history did she enjoy the most. She said something generic, and I pressed the question asking more specific questions. She said oh you know, just art. She says I locate and purchase sculptures for clients. when I asked her what was one of the most famous pieces that she had recovered for a client, she abruptly ended the conversation. More than likely these scammers are some dudes hiding behind attractive women's photos that they got online and no absolutely nothing about the background or storyline they are pretending to be. Just start asking lots of simple innocent questions. If a person truly is in that line of work, they should be able to gratefully answer questions. The vast majority of us like to talk or brag about our work or talk about problems with our work. Rarely, when we ask others about specifics of what they do, do they end the conversation. you don't have to ask them where they work, or for whom they work, just start asking generic questions that are non-threatening to most people. Now this will always tell you if you're being scammed, but it should weed out a whole bunch of the scammers. For example, someone earlier in the comments mentioned that a person was an oil rig worker. You could ask them what specifically do they do on oil rig? When they answer it and give some generic answer, just do this: if you don't know anything about that kind of work, quickly Google it and ask about differences in drill bits or anything like that. Take 30 seconds and read the first couple entries, then go back and ask them the question about drill bits or whatever. a real oil rig worker might be a little impressed that you knew or sounded like you knew something about the industry, and they will usually spill forth information. if you keep asking questions and asking questions, and their answers become increasingly generalized or even irritated, beware!

I met a man on Fitbit.com. After our first chat, he wanted to move to hangouts. Then we went to WhatsApp. He says he's not on social media sites. He says his name is Jackson Lorenzo. From Houston Texas. He says he's 45. When he called me I was surprised by his accent. He has sent a good few pictured. Nice looking, graying, beautiful blue eyes, beard, about 5'9". Fit. He says he's in Qatar as a civil engineer on a private contract. At the time he was in charge of a skyscraper crew in Doha. Within a month, he has a "heart attack" and the hospital won't do the surgery without $58,000. Could I help? No. He managed to borrow from other people he said... A few weeks go by. Then his son in the US got a very rare kidney cancer. In both kidneys. The hospital in Houston wouldn't do the surgery without $30,000. Again he asked me for money. I suggested st jude's hospital. No, I didn't send money. He said he managed to get the money from friends again. His contract ended in Dec 2020. We were to meet Dec 6 in Houston. I booked my flight. 2 weeks before the meeting, he told me that he took another contract for the green tunnel job for another 6 months. He would not be coming back until later in the month. I cancelled my flight. I did send money to his housekeeper for bills. $3,000. Money order. Mailed. And moneygram. My charitable donation, I guess. He promised to pay me back. Now, they found oil in his tunnel. He is responsible for the shipment costs and needs $10,000 more than he has on him. Could I help? I told him I would not send him any more money. He made the decision to stay there. He asked at least once a week. I have tried to look him up, but he's nowhere. I'm still talking to him even though I believe he's not real.

Met a very handsome guy on Words With Friends. Said he's not always on WWF, so invited me to Hangouts. He always refer to me as "my love" whenever he talks to me, and is the sweetest guy you'll ever met. He swept me off my feet, sent me beautiful photos of flowers and links to love songs on YouTube. He's widowed, wife died in childbirth. He's an independent Structural Engineer that travels often as he has contracts in Europe quite often. On the 2nd week of chatting with him, he asked for $100-$150 worth of Itunes card. Third week and asked for Google Play card. I've known him for almost 4 weeks already and now he is asking for me to wire some money to Ukraine... Hmmm..
