The FTC is getting reports about people pretending to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) who are trying to get your Social Security number and even your money. In one version of the scam, the caller says your Social Security number has been linked to a crime (often, he says it happened in Texas) involving drugs or sending money out of the country illegally. He then says your Social is blocked – but he might ask you for a fee to reactivate it, or to get a new number. And he will ask you to confirm your Social Security number.

In other variations, he says that somebody used your Social Security number to apply for credit cards, and you could lose your benefits. Or he might warn you that your bank account is about to be seized, that you need to withdraw your money, and that he’ll tell you how to keep it safe.

But all of these are scams. Here’s what you need to know:

  • The SSA will never (ever) call and ask for your Social Security number. It won’t ask you to pay anything. And it won’t call to threaten your benefits.
  • Your caller ID might show the SSA’s real phone number (1-800-772-1213), but that’s not the real SSA calling. Computers make it easy to show any number on caller ID. You can’t trust what you see there.
  • Never give your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Don’t confirm the last 4 digits. And don’t give a bank account or credit card number – ever – to anybody who contacts you asking for it.
  • Remember that anyone who tells you to wire money, pay with a gift card, or send cash is a scammer. Always. No matter who they say they are.

If you’re worried about a call from someone who claims to be from the Social Security Administration, get off the phone. Then call the real SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778). If you’ve spotted a scam, then tell the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint.

I keep getting called from this number 701-515-9610. They left a message to call them back asap before they take legal actions about my account. I called them and they asked me for my first and last name so they can verify my account. I didn't feel comfortable answering this person questions and hanged up the phone. I almost 100% that this people are not from the social security dept as they claimed to be so I would like to report this number to the social security department so they can further investigate the legitimate of this number. Thanks

someone called me at my job posing as social security from phone # 410-450-4735. They had a "batch #" SSA3011 as an identifier that consisted of what appeared as a social security number so as to seem legit. There was a case number as well. They told me my social security number had been involved in drug smuggling and money laundering and that the Dept. of Justice was involved. They wanted me to go to my bank to freeze my assets or something of that nature. When I told them I was at work and I needed to put them on hold, someone else came on the line and said, "this is happening honey!" and phone disconnected. These schemes are getting so elaborate. Please do not fall for the foreign accent that makes it sound even more believable.

Today, I received 7 phone calls every 30-45 minutes from 11 am through 3 pm and on my iPhone, they show valid business names, or people's names in ALL CAPS, but they are not people programmed in my contacts list. Every one was a recorded call voice saying "Dear Citizen,....blah blah blah, SSN compromised... blah blah... lose benefits..." I wish I could block them, but they just change numbers.

I received this voicemail message from "Matthe McCarthy" (that's the spelling on my Caller ID) from 202-378-8924. "There is a legal enforcement action against you. Your social security number has been suspected of illegal or fraudulent activity. We have received instructions to suspend all your bank accounts and social. So once you receive this message, and if you don't want to get arrested and resolve this case, call us back at 866-475-1720 and talk to the officer at Social Security Administration."

I was contacted today about a suspension of my social security number. They told me that a fraud was detected in Atlanta, Ga., and that it was about selling drugs, money laundering and bank fraud. They said they were from the Social Security Inspector General's office. They sounded like they were iranian, or something, with names like Jeffrey Thomas and Jack Wilson, lol. I could tell it was a scam, so I just went along with it, but gave no info, as supposedly they already have my info. They are supposed to call back tomorrow.

We get these kinds of calls on a weekly basis. we get a recorded message saying the ssn has been compromised and that the problem needs to be take care of. To connect with an officer to press 1. I know for a fact that SSA and the IRA will NEVER contact you by phone or email. It would always be by a formal letter with a complete explanation as to why they are contacting you. To whom ever is reading this post, keep that in mind....I will repeat...the SSA and the IRA will NEVER contact you by phone or email. It would always be by a formal letter with a complete explanation as to why they are contacting you.

I received my first call like this scam today, fortunately I know NEVER to do any of the things these people ask if they get in touch with me. I didn't answer the call because I never answer calls when I don't recognize the number anyway (because of these ridiculous scam calls and telemarketers; ugh, so many of these). The phone number on my caller ID was (281) 851-3688. They claimed that legal enforcement actions will be taken by federal agents and my SSN will be blocked permanently, ROFL! I really can't believe that anyone would believe this nonsense, but I know they attemp to contact the vulnerable and I'm not speaking about the vulnerable falling for it. That's just so wrong on so many levels! What they are doing period, is wrong no matter who it affects!
