Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Yes, I just received this call they stated that my social security showed fraudulent activity and that there was a warrant out for my arrest in the state of Texas (which I have never been to in my life). I got the persons info on the phone and hung up. I contacted my local sheriffs office and they informed me that yes, this is indeed a common scam that has been going around to not provide them with any personal information. Stay safe.

I had two calls within a few hours today. Both stating that Social Security was investigating illegal enforcement actions against my number. I called the number back and within two rings someone answered the phone with a very thick accent. I blocked the number, (469) 423-6311.

I have just received a phone call, asking me to provide my name and give my National Insurance Number, i basically told the gentleman on the end of the phone i will not divulge any information until they can explain to me who they are and what the company is and what they want for me, at this point he did start to get high rate, so i replied saying i will not give you any information as this sounds like a scam. to this point he hung up. point to note throughout the whole conversation there was a time lapse and there was an audible sound before he spoke. (this is what told me this is false)

I received a call today saying my Ssn is on hold because I am under investigation for multiple crimes. Money laundering, drug trafficking, 20 illegal bank accounts opend under my name and more. I was given a case number, warrant number and was told to expect a visit from local authorities. All the people spoke with an Indian accent and I could not get any straight answers. Two different phone numbers called me today, both have opposite area codes. FBI, US Marshall's and a man claiming to be an officer of the law with dabge number told me not to talk to anyone about the phone call I received. Who are these people?

None of it is real. When I first heard it my heart was racing, not realizing that it was a scam. Well I contacted the local police none emergency line and they are aware of the situation but there's nothing they can do. Received another call this morning and was told the same thing. Money laundering, identity theft, and drug trafficking. Somehow the phone disconnected and he had the nerve to call me back and asked if I hung up on him while he's discussing such an important matter. I told him "No, I didn't hang up but know that this is BS and please don't call my phone."

I just received a call from 903-207-8652 and it went to voicemail. An automated voicemail was left saying that if I did not call back that legal proceedings would follow. I called back and they asked me to verify my name. They gave me their name and a badge number starting. They asked me to confirm my SSN and I said no since I wasn't sure they said who why said they were... They proceeded to hang up on me. I called back and went thru the same process with someone else, and when I refused to give them my SSN the man said "see you behind the bars". Clearly a last ditch threat to scare someone into calling back and giving information. These people need to be repremanded.
