Image of cupid and heartNot everyone using online dating sites is looking for love. Scammers create fake online profiles using photos of other people — even stolen pictures of real military personnel. They profess their love quickly. And they tug at your heartstrings with made-up stories about how they need money — for emergencies, hospital bills, or travel. Why all of the tricks? They’re looking to steal your money.

As if all that isn’t bad enough, romance scammers are now involving their victims in online bank fraud. Here’s how it works: The scammers set up dating profiles to meet potential victims. After they form a “relationship,” they come up with reasons to ask their love interest to set up a new bank account. The scammers transfer stolen money into the new account, and then tell their victims to wire the money out of the country. Victims think they’re just helping out their soulmate, never realizing they’re aiding and abetting a crime.

Here are some warning signs that an online love interest might be a fake. They ask you to:

  • chat off of the dating site immediately, using personal email, text, or phone
  • wire money using Western Union or Money Gram
  • set up a new bank account

Did you know you can do an image search of your love interest’s photo in your favorite search engine? If you do an image search and the person’s photo appears under several different names, you’re probably dealing with a scammer. And if the person’s online profile disappears a few days after they meet you, that’s another tip-off.

Here’s the real deal: Don’t send money to someone you met online — for any reason. If your online sweetheart asks for money, you can expect it’s a scam.

Unfortunately, online dating scams are all too common. There may be tens of thousands of victims, and only a small fraction report it to the FTC. If this happens to you, please report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

He company sent me a email asking for money for him to come out to make sure I was real.Wanted me to start an dcu account to send the money to him. Then he wanted me to give him the pin so he could transfer me money to pay for it. Then he got upset with me when I wouldn't and said he couldn't deal with my mistrust and cut me off. I have been scammed a month ago by someone called James Carter who claimed to be a soldier in Kabul. He really seemed like a lovely man. Met him on instagram and then moved on to hangouts. We fell in love .

Then after 3 weeks he said that he and 4 other soldiers found a box with 30 million dollars left by terrorists. They devided the money and he had 7 million. He wanted to send his share to an address in England.I gave him my address and I would get 15% of it. Thinking that would help my family.

Well then it started. The box was sent by military diplomats to a military base in England. I had to pay registration charges. A girl called Janet Blodsoe was in charge with the money. I had to send money abroad for security reasons. I sent £800 via Western union to Portugal. More problems then . Alex Younger was involved now because of border control.

I had to send £14000 to pay for this. Again to an account abroad. Turkey this time.My bank did warn me if I knew this person. But they threatened me with arrest because of money laundering. So I insisted to the bank I wanted this sent. So I my savings gone. Next message was . More problems for the box to be released. It was now in England and a soldier named Fuller was in charge. The next payment was £85000. I said I don’t have that. In the end I only had to come up with £20000. Again I did not have that.

Then it dawned on me that it was all a scam. I have been through hell with worry. Slowly I am coming to terms with this. Please be aware every one.

Thank you for sharing your story to help others. You can report this to the FTC at FTC.gov/complaint, and the details will go into a secure database that law enforcement uses for investigations. You can choose how much personal information to give.

You can also report this to the Western Union fraud hotline (look online for a contact) and to local law enforcement.

Hi Dutchie... I am talking to a James Carter from England but he gives me a totally different story. There are some red flags though and I’m afraid I’m being catfished. Did he ever send you a photo or videos with him in it? I’d like to know if it’s the same guy. Thanks!

Has anyone heard of a scammer Anastasia Aryee or Ayree in Ghana? She has a friend named Clement Yanee. I have a friend who is developing a relationship with her but I am very suspicious. She was on her way to US to be with my friend and had a car accident. Almost died. Her friend Clement said she needed money to have surgery but my friend did not send anymore. She is suppose to be 29 years old. She does not really ask for money but he sent her $1,000.00 for a plane ticket. She says she has gold bricks. She will pay him back when she gets in US. There have been a few other things but I can not find anything on her much. They met on a dating site. I just wanted to know if anyone had heard of her? My friend will not listen to me. Thanks in advance for your advice.

Good afternoon everyone, I post a description of a male scammer on page 54 on March 22, 2018 under GB1030. I recently discovered some quotes sent to my friend. I was wondering if anyone has any information about the quotes. First one is, Commitment is the greatest key to a successful relationship. If you are committed you will always find a way to work thing out communication. Talking and open honest communication about how you feel. Here is the second one. Love is not having someone give you the world. Love is creating a whole new world together and that's what we are doing. This is the third quote. I didn't expect you to have tears, but I must have touched your heart in a special way that the tears are from being happy with you. I wish o could wipe them away with my lips, but when we finally meet, I feel there will be tears of joy and happiness in us both goodnight my love. Here is the fourth one. If I Had to choose between breathing and loving you I would use my last breath to tell you I love you. You are the fire that burns the passion within my soul. I love you with all my heart. Gravitation is not responsible for people falling in love. Ever since I've met you no one else is worth thinking about. The most important things are the hardest to say, because words finish them. If anyone has information about these quotes please let me know with the reply option on this blog. Thank you for your help.

Anyone familiar with the name Gregory James or James Gregory. Had an online relationship with this guy for 4 years, always had a suspicion something wasn't right, but continued to have a soft spot as he went on about all his struggles dealing with his business as an Engineer dealing in oil. To make a long story short, over time he starting asking for help in the way of funds, I always told him I had none, but I did come into an inheritance from my uncle, and without a blink as stupid as that was, I told him about it and that I could help him some. He said he was stranded in Nigeria, lost all his funds to transport Oil back to London, and he needed to get back home to care for his daughter. It was a long drawn out story, and over time from (2011 to 2015) I kept sending him funds, until I realized I wouldn't get a penny back from this guys, as his troubles never ended. His story is long and complicated. I lost over $100.000. This guy devastated me and my life..how stupid I was to believe him and his stories. I had to changed my phones numbers and block him from Facebook, but still seems to try and contact me through other names on Facebook trying to friend me. I know its him and I block all names now asking to be a friend. He's destroyed my life and my health, beware people.

Has anyone heard of a Steve Adams? Claims he is an artitecht and head of his own construction company in Boston. He is widowed and had no children. Heavy heavy accent but understandable. Had to leave for a $7million dollar job in Turkey..he even went through the trouble of forwarding me a copy of the contract, which obviously was made up...been chatting for a Few weeks...hasn’t asked for money but today said he needed a new phone and they are too expensive over in Turkey. He asked if I could go to Best Buy and get him a phone and he would pay it off when he returned at the end of the month...I keep coming up with excuses as to why I can’t get to the store just yet. His photos are beyond handsome and do not come up in a reverse search. I met him on Ourtime.com....he’s a smooth talker and obviously gets his verses from the Internet. I did get his address or what I thought was it and when I looked it up it was owned by another person who is actually selling it...won’t he be in for a surpise lol

Reading all these stories, mine is the same. I have been looking for somewhere I can tell my story to help others. I excepted a friendship request from a military guy. He said his name was Thomas David and was an E6 SSG in Afghanistan. His ex wife cheated on him and he was looking for love. I told him I was married and not interested, but we could be friends. That didn't stop him, he said he was in love with me after 2 days. He wanted to marry me, and God sent me to him. He talks very sweet. I figured him out in less than 2 weeks. This is how I did my investigation. First, your profile was set up 3 days before friending me. Second he talked to me till 5 and sometimes after 6 Afghanistan time. So when do you work? He had lots of pics, but couldn't send me a selfie when asked. So I did a image search and saw all the names this guy uses, Mark Freguson, mark Campbel, Chuck, Ghantt..., I reported him to Facebook and blocked him, but he did get me to go to hangouts before I figured him out. If you get friended by Thomas David he is not real, don't talk to him!!!!

He threatened me saying that if I didnt send him some gaming cards he would notify my husband that we were having an affair! I blocked him on everything I had. Total scammer and loser!!

I need to know if anyone has had contact with a Derek Bradford, Stephen Nolan Rojas or Josh Summerfield. All have contacted me through Instagram. Derek claims to be suicidal, alone. Ex cheated on him 2 kids. Has asked for money grams, itunes, helping him with bitcoin, opening bank accounts. Stephen aka Nolan - CA. Wife deceased, young daughter. First asked for cell phone account info for verifying a business, iTunes cards for daughter, house burnt during CA fires, can’t get insurance $, needs $ to get another house, asked Vanilla MC so a business can deposit $ for a job he did in Rome. Both these two have confessed undying love, wants to create a life together, etc. they have sent sexually explicit pics. Josh seemed legit until he asked for ITunes card t so he could upload his construction plans to company he was hired by. He traveled to Greece for this work. His sister is a nun. I told him to use his credit card to purchase online and he said he didn’t have one. I know these are scammers, I just want confirmation that someone else has had contact. They are all on Instagram.

The same guy contacted me a few days ago, his Instagram name was Frank James. He pretends to be a surgeon. Said he’s originally from Italy but spent time in San Antonio. Wife dead from breast cancer. Son in boarding school near Atlanta. Red flags went up immediately when he wanted to get off Instagram and use Hangouts. He began asking me a million questions likecmy full name and email. I asked his full name and he said James Frank Maxwell. I immediately googled him and there was no such dr in the US. I told him that he’s not giving me his real name as all US doctors will come up on Google. He then said he was in Syria. So there was no question he was fake. I did a reverse image search on his photos and within 30 seconds several of them came up as belonging to the Instagram account of a doctor from Brazil who has a verified account. I immediately reported him on Instagram, blocked him and deleted everything. I was lucky. I assume this person’s still out there creating another fake profile, using the same photos. Beware.

I am almost certain I’m talking to the same guy you all mentioned above. This one has pics of a clean cut, dark hair and blue eyed man wearing a US Army uniform with the name “Mason” on it. He even sent a video of him with men behind him as he says “we’re going home birches!” To try to prove he’s real. I’d like to find this Mason soldier and let him know his infor has been stolen and is being used by a scam artist trying to con women. I’ve been calling the scam artist out for about an hour now out of amusement and all he can say to prove himself is “am the one.” And “oh u make me really launched.” He doesn’t seem to like that I’ve called him a liar, made it clear that I’m not falling for any of his bs and that all his pics are someone else’s that he stole. He seems to have a limited English vocabulary and copies and pastes the same paragraphs over and over again. All his interests are very outdated and bizarre. I’m not naive enough to ever send him anything and assured him our conversation was saved and will be reported. I hope the soldier who’s pics this guy is using is still alive and well. I hope he gets to find this scumbag and press charges against him somehow and I’d be more than glad to help with all the info I’ve gathered.

You could contact a legal aid lawyer to see if you're eligible to get help, or use this state-by-state list from the American Bar Association to find a private lawyer in your state. It also has information about your state court system and explains what you can do on your own.

The State Bar Associations website is another resource. Use the State Bar Associations list to find the bar association in your county, and call them to ask about finding a lawyer.

I do believe son's name is Stanley. I made the mistake and friended him on Instagram. Long story short, he has a long term contract with the UN in Syria and he has no access to a bank there in Syria. He wants to resign and come to the US and marry me. BUT, it will take me sending him 1200 dollars to hire a lawyer to get him processed out in a week. I blocked him at first when he asked and then came back and unblocked him to just see. Oh I don't believe him and trust him. Had been hammering me to get on Hangouts and finally made him do FB. Dear Reading: I also met a so-called fake person in The Military on F.B. He goes by the name: Capt George Menesses age 50. Stated he was stationed over in: Northern Afghanistan close to Taliban Territory.. Stated he was on a 2 wks mission in which he'd would be coming back to the states. He was a Catholic and the only child in his family... Which both is parents were now deceased. He was trying to find a female friend to marry and settle down.. Kept asking if I had my own home? Also after 1 week of texting each other... He proceed to ask If I'd pray for protection for him and his men? Stated they were being sent to the backside of the dessert to set-up an ambush for the Taliban... They were supposedly sneaking weapons into there country... After 4 days... I received no texting from him... On the six day he finally text again but on "Hang Outs!" Using CA C . At this point of game he had been shot in the shoulder and 2 of his men died! Then he proceed to inform me that during this ambush somehow they were now raiding a Taliban Compound in which he Capt George Menesess discovered a metal foot looker up in a ceiling which contained: Weapons some drugs and 2.5 Million dollars. He stated he turned in the wrapons and drugs to his superiors but kept the money! In which he now need some very special women to become his wife and let him settle down after his retirement from "The Army! He wanted me to receive a piece of luggage along with a box of all his important papers... I played his game until he said: Send me a Photo of yourself and your address.. Where upon he has sent a diplomat thru Turkey airport to take the next plane to american to find my address to give me this box and luggage which supposedly contained 2.5 Million dollars... I refused him he insisted that I was the women of his dreams! I refused again and again for him to not do this! I didn't trust this guy from the begining.. That's no way to meet a women! Even told him I wanted no relationship even from the very begining. I could tell he was typing slowly in each of his returned text! Meaning he was using the phone to correct his spelling! When I didn't willingly except this person tricks to get my address ... He got up-set and his texting became very sloppy! Final he insisted it's to late to stop The Diplomat he's on his way to Turkey Airport! Now it's suddenly all my fault that the "Diplomat is now struck in at "The Airport; unable to get a ticket cause he doesn't know where to send the box/ luggage to!" Has no photo and no address! Now he wants me to send him $700.00 dollars to get his stuff out of customs...I played stupid until he said I was giving him a head ache! I blocked this person on F.B and Hang Outs! Then he jumps over to my gmail! But when I exposed him and let him know what I discovered about him... He so far has left me alone! Be very careful ladies! Do some spying on them behind the scenes! Track Phone No: Photo look up on google! Never ever reveal your personal information .. Use wisdom. Date:4-12-18 Thursday!

Please help me. I chat with someone named Dr. Paul Walter, a Medical Doctor (MD) at Cardiff University Hospital. I am a researcher and I will hate myself to be victimized by a scammer. He said that he is a widow with a 19 year old daughter. He began to profess his love a few days after our chat. I guess it's been two weeks since the time that we started chatting. He wants to send me money -about 50,000 US$. I am suspicious because he asked for my passport photo yesterday and I sent it this morning because whether we admit or not, we already established rapport. He is telling me this evening that he is going to Canada to have a seminar. He asked if I have any account and I said no. I want to open an account with a government-owned bank. I just notice that his voice seems to have a sense of urgency. I tried searching his name online but only his FB is apparent. How I am going to scrutinize if this man is genuine or not?

Some scammers use people to help them transfer stolen money. They meet a person online, create a relationship, and ask their new sweetheart to use their existing bank account, or open a new account. Then the scammer asks the victim to receive and transfer money.

If you do this for a scammer, your name is on the bank account and on the money transfer forms. If you get involved with one of these schemes, you could lose money and personal information, and you could get into legal trouble.

Someone can use your passport photo and personal information to create a new identity and commit identity theft. This list tells warning signs of identity theft. If you experience identity theft, report it at IdentityTheft.gov, and create a recovery plan.

I have been texting with a man named Paul Cazorla for about 6 weeks. He told me that he lived in a town about 30 miles from me. But then he said he had to go to Nova Scotia to work for 4 weeks. He has professed his love for me and said he wants a future with me. Just like the rest of the messages above there were gaps in between messages coming from him and sometimes the the English was different from other times. He was so sweet and really seems to be legitimate but now I am worried that he is not because now he tells me that he is thinking about taking a job in Turkey. And that he would be gone about 2 months. He wanted my opinion on if I wanted him to take the job or not and that he was actually going to ask his son the same thing. He has never asked me for money and I believe I really fell in love with this guy. When he told me was thinking about taking this job in Turkey I was very upset because I thought he would be coming home to the states and that we would finally meet and maybe we would have a future together. But now I am not sure what to do because I look at his picture and I know I have fallen in lovwwe with him.

I was almost scammed by a man I met on Words with Friends. He was a widow on an oil rig. He convinced me to chat with him on Viber because of security reasons on the oil rig. Of course he fell in love right away, talked marriage & wanted to video chat. Then had an emergency and I was the only person in the world that could help him. I got suspicious and found this website and have read all of the stories. I am very grateful that I did not get scammed. Also I totally understand how this is happening to so many people. These scammers are very convincing. One tip I would like to pass along is about the reverse image search. I used Google & Tineye and there were no results. After about a month I tried again just for the heck of it and had several results dating back to 2016 on several websites and different names. So try more than once if you get no results the first time.
