Image of cupid and heartNot everyone using online dating sites is looking for love. Scammers create fake online profiles using photos of other people — even stolen pictures of real military personnel. They profess their love quickly. And they tug at your heartstrings with made-up stories about how they need money — for emergencies, hospital bills, or travel. Why all of the tricks? They’re looking to steal your money.

As if all that isn’t bad enough, romance scammers are now involving their victims in online bank fraud. Here’s how it works: The scammers set up dating profiles to meet potential victims. After they form a “relationship,” they come up with reasons to ask their love interest to set up a new bank account. The scammers transfer stolen money into the new account, and then tell their victims to wire the money out of the country. Victims think they’re just helping out their soulmate, never realizing they’re aiding and abetting a crime.

Here are some warning signs that an online love interest might be a fake. They ask you to:

  • chat off of the dating site immediately, using personal email, text, or phone
  • wire money using Western Union or Money Gram
  • set up a new bank account

Did you know you can do an image search of your love interest’s photo in your favorite search engine? If you do an image search and the person’s photo appears under several different names, you’re probably dealing with a scammer. And if the person’s online profile disappears a few days after they meet you, that’s another tip-off.

Here’s the real deal: Don’t send money to someone you met online — for any reason. If your online sweetheart asks for money, you can expect it’s a scam.

Unfortunately, online dating scams are all too common. There may be tens of thousands of victims, and only a small fraction report it to the FTC. If this happens to you, please report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

I met someone named Fernando, he said he is Portuguese but live in Ontario, Canada. He said his wife leave him with 2 beautiful girls (he showed me the girls' pictures) and the girls stay in boarding school. He said he owns a pipe construction company, and needs to travel to many places. He sent me his pictures, sometimes he covered his face with his dog (dog's colour is black and white) he rejects to do video call. He actually want me to ask him some money or things i need, but I didn't and he got upset with me. I did blocked him on viber, after a week, he follows me on my whatsapp. He uses many different phone numbers, and ask me to try to get him a sim card from my country. Is anyone have the same story as mine?

Scammer name Atalebe Majid (aka Charles). He quickly got me onto Whatsapp for video chatting. He did show himself on video. over the conversation he showed voter registration card, national health insurance card, visa card all with his name to try and prove his identity to me. he sent pictures of mail parcel he received to show address (with tracking number). he fell in love with m e over the course of a few days. he wanted me to come visit him in ghana. he wants me to see he is real before I commit to doing anything substantial. he asked for small amounts of money $50, 100. This was for internet bundle or wifi. he then asked for 700 to buy a motorbike we would need while traveling in Ghana. he wanted me to come for the Easter festival April 10th. v when I told him I couldn't use western union, he tried to get me to use cashapp, worldremit. ria, sendwave. ultimately he tried to give me the name of someone in New York to send the money instead of sending to him. abdul f nurdeen. he wanted to send him western union. i said can't. offered ria again and finally said he would ask if abudu had cash app. no address he was careful not to provide usa phone number.

I am asking for my elderly mother. An Australian man has reached out to her and he messaged her off of Facebook and had them switch the conversation over to Hangouts for more privacy. He seems nice but very suspicious and my mother is aware of such concerns but he hasn’t asked for anything. He is claiming to be a rich Australian who lives in New York and has a 9 year old son in boarding school. He is widowed and works for the government in some secret way and describes his job weirdly. He says he will be retiring soon and is looking to settle down with a nice woman. He claimed he is 58. He goes by one name on face book last name Jacobs but on hangout and in he’s emails and the real name he is calming is Simmons Franklin. I have verified his email on 3 different websites that were highly recommended and they came back okay and when I reverse searched his photos nothing came up at all. We have blocked him on all sites and he then reached out via email claiming to be confused about why my mother blocked him and is willing to video chat. If anyone knows if this is a scam please let me know or if anyone has come across this man please let me know.

I was talking to a guy going by the name of David Ayers. He said he was working on getting a permit to mine in Zonguldak Turkey. Right before we were supposed to meet, he said he had to go to New York to meet with the Turkish officials. Then he had to go directly to Turkey.for 20 days to do the mining. He told me his laptop and cellphone were stolen at the airport and the local store did not have the right items. Would I buy them and send them down to Turkey. The cost was almost 4,000 US dollars. I said no, I don’t feel comfortable with that. I asked him to prove his identity in three different ways. Of course he didn’t, all the while saying he was in love with me. I stopped talking to him finally.

Does anyone know of a a scammer using the woman's name TAMMY L SMITH? My father is being taken by this person and he won't believe it's an online scam. She's an orphan (of course) didn't finish high school or go to college (so you can't really try to find her that way) asking for $$, says she needs to pay tax on a large amount of money her husband left her in his will in Egypt and then she will share in the proceeds. Classic story if you just google romance scams but my dad will not believe this is fake. Curious if this name and story has been used before.

Yes, I have been contacted by Tony Pence. I was new on the dating site...... He spent time weaving his lies, we were supposed to meet and suddenly had to bid on a job in Cape Town. Then had had to go to the job. Called me his soulmate and even created a fake webpage, showing me how much money he was about to make on an Oil Rig. All was great and I was falling for him till one night, out of the blue he reached out and asked me to send him a laptop (supposed to be out working on an oil rig). LOL, he said he was a chemical engineer, (how could he be able to work without a laptop?????) Said he was from CT but actually from South Africa. Really charming. Met on Dating site (Zoosk) he used a MODEL's pictures which I found out where fake after I searched it on Bing. Really hurtful what these guys do. Research!!!!! So many scammers out there.

Just ended 6 weeks of messaging with a Bobby who contacted me via POF. He's an oil rig guy out in the Gulf. We had one conversation after he gave me his number. I have since found out that it's a land line phone located on the coast of Fla. After a few weeks on the website transitioned to Google Hangouts for easier messaging. He is a good writer and we shared a lot of common interests. He said he lives in VT which is not far from me so we decided to give our connection a go. After three weeks into this he experienced equipment failure, shut down the drilling operation and was worried about a huge financial setback. He asked to borrow 5K. I wrote that I could not. He asked again for 3K about a week later. I really wanted to help him but the cash had to be sent to a residential area in Va. and this sounded sketchy to me. A friend alerted me about the "Oil Rig Scamming" and that was a huge wake up call. I told him that this changed my mind. He was upset that I did't trust him, didn't keep my promise to help him, and how could I be serious about a relationship if I wasn't willing to help. I explained my view of what a real relationship is but it didn't matter. We continued to message for another week. I asked for a real time photo with a "Hi ---" but he angerly refused to do this, saying that I was trying to scam him. I knew then that the POF photos are fake. When I saw that he was back to reading personals I used that and the fact I couldn't trust him as my reason to end it with him. So Sisters everywhere looking for a good man...be careful and don't message for a long time because it sucks you in emotionally and run!!! when these scammers ask for money!!

Feeling stupid
April 24, 2020
I met a man on words with friends 2. Jason Miller. His profile pic on the game is a handsome well built man leaning against a white car. Blue tee shirt black shorts tattoo of a chain around left leg. We began chatting in August then he requested we go to hangout. I actually told him I don’t like hangout because it’s full of scammers. He did also give me phone numbers. Like 3. I thought that strange. Still, most of are conversations were on hangouts. Eventually he claims he was accepted for an oil rig job in Dubaii. Supposed to be a 2 week job. Well time went by and within a week he lost his wallet and a machine got messed up. He claimed he was responsible for the machine and had to purchase another. He wanted to open a Coinbase account for me and link my bank to it. Now that I look back I think he linked my account to his Coinbase. Before he even left for this job he told me on our many conversations that he invested in Coinbase. Well I believed him and we had video called several times and called daily. Anyway to make a long story short. Basically a wire deposit came to my account and it caused fraud on my account I was told my account would be closed and I could no longer bank there. He of course was telling me he didn’t understand and my bank must have different policies on wires. Then ask me how quickly I could open another account. I told him I would not be doing any transactions with him for wires. So, a few weeks go by and he decides that he’s just ready to come home. He had been there since November for this 2 week job and now it’s February 2020. So ask me if I could get him $5000 to get home. Well I could only come up with $2500 . WireD it to an account he claimed was “the exchangers” there in Dubaii. That very evening He ask for an iTunes card saying he would need to purchase firewall to protect his computer before the trip home. The next day he told me he had an argument with the company as he was “abandoning” the job. He claimed he had to pay the company $2000 to get his passport back. He now would only be needing $1500 to get the plane ticket to get home. His home he claimed was Los Angeles. California. By now I’m feeling pretty dumb and scammed. We kept talking tho as he kept telling me he would be paying me back as soon as he got back. So a few days ago, he tells me I need to accept a check from bitcoins, he will have the check put in my name. I will cash the check at my bank. I explained that I would not accept a check for larger then $1000. He got very upset with me. Claimed “why are you being so cautious with me? You treating me like someone you don’t know, you act like you don’t want to help me now! None of this is my fault!” Etc. Etc. .. he then tells me he wants me to go into www. blockchain. and set up an account. I told him I would not link a bank account to that and I would not do an account in my name. He got very upset. Luckily as I went in to see about an account. In my home state it’s not legal there yet. He got so mad! I just said I don’t know what to do now. So yesterday he ask me if I could open an IRA for him? I text him saying “are you insane? No I won’t!” He replied back “ok”then blocked me from the 2 sights we had been messaging on WhatsApp And Hangout. I think he finally figured out I knew he was a scammer. I did let Zyniga know of the scammer on their game Words With friends 2. They replied with “ I would not know the results of their investigation due to the privacy of the other player.”As of today, he’s still actively playing on the game. I’m sure scamming someone else! Ladies LOOK OUT! Jason Miller on Words With Friends 2 is a SCAMMER! Block and delete him if he sends you a game request. Now I’m left to pay back this money he promised he would pay me back. LIES, LIES, more LIES!

Kingsley Johnson. Claims he is a 29 yr old E5 in the Army. Contacted on IG. Was proclaiming his love for me after a few hours. Wanted my phone # to chat on WhatsApp. Never asked for anything but follows thousands of women, some of who have called him out for messaging multiple women. Terrible grammar. Fairly certain the pictures are stolen and he’s looking for someone to prey on.

I have had a few different guys follow me on Twitter and I know that they are Scammers. Their names are, Dave Lucas, Owen Lordan, Christopher Johnson, Laurent Adams to name but a few. It never fails, they ask me to change to WhatsApp or Hangouts very quickly. They use the same chat and their grammar is appalling. I know exactly what’s coming. There’s always a far fetched sob story too. I just string them along for a while but I don’t give them any personal information. Eventually, I tell them what I think of them and that I know they are a fraud and then, I immediately block them! Just tell them ANYTHING! They are a disgrace and unfortunately some women and men are taken in by these scammers. They need to be completely obliterated but that is easier said than done.
