Image of cupid and heartNot everyone using online dating sites is looking for love. Scammers create fake online profiles using photos of other people — even stolen pictures of real military personnel. They profess their love quickly. And they tug at your heartstrings with made-up stories about how they need money — for emergencies, hospital bills, or travel. Why all of the tricks? They’re looking to steal your money.

As if all that isn’t bad enough, romance scammers are now involving their victims in online bank fraud. Here’s how it works: The scammers set up dating profiles to meet potential victims. After they form a “relationship,” they come up with reasons to ask their love interest to set up a new bank account. The scammers transfer stolen money into the new account, and then tell their victims to wire the money out of the country. Victims think they’re just helping out their soulmate, never realizing they’re aiding and abetting a crime.

Here are some warning signs that an online love interest might be a fake. They ask you to:

  • chat off of the dating site immediately, using personal email, text, or phone
  • wire money using Western Union or Money Gram
  • set up a new bank account

Did you know you can do an image search of your love interest’s photo in your favorite search engine? If you do an image search and the person’s photo appears under several different names, you’re probably dealing with a scammer. And if the person’s online profile disappears a few days after they meet you, that’s another tip-off.

Here’s the real deal: Don’t send money to someone you met online — for any reason. If your online sweetheart asks for money, you can expect it’s a scam.

Unfortunately, online dating scams are all too common. There may be tens of thousands of victims, and only a small fraction report it to the FTC. If this happens to you, please report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

I have a brother who has just been recently widowed earlier this year. He was very lonely and began dating a woman named Anita, who says she’s 35 from Budapest. He is 60, has a home and is modestly established in AZ. They met on a JW dating site which he was embarrassed to reveal. Supposedly, she has had one of her local elders from a congregation there call my brother and speak highly of her, but showed disappointment in how they met. He has only spoken to her once. She is beautiful and even has a couple of photos wearing a badge for a JW convention. My brother is not bad looking, but he’s no Omar Sharif. She does not work due to COVID-19 and because she says she was sexually harassed and lost her former job. Her phone is “broken” and it’s irreparable, she can only communicate through Hangout and emails. She can’t take more photos because she doesn’t have a camera. She is pictured with full lips, long blond hair, clear light complexion of a Romanian woman, and hazel eyes. He has been communicating with her since May 2020, and already the use endearments and confess love for each other. She drew up a contract promising him her hand in marriage...he may already be sending her money each month. Recently, I found out from another family member that she said her friend from the USA is in Budapest and would like to purchase a condo, but needs to have money sent to his account and then will need him to exchange it from various ATM in AZ to Bitcoins. It all sounds underhanded and illegal. I’m worried sick. Is this possibly the same person? She speaks with a heavy accent and her emails have obvious errors, as if she can’t communicate in English clearly.

I have been talking to a man that I met on a dating site. We were talking for a few weeks. He had a trip to Germany planned but would fly to see me at the end of his trip. He was not on his flight. Two weeks later I was connected by a hospital telling the man was attacked and robbed and was in critical condition and I needed to send money for surgery. I did . Then I needed to pay his hospital bill. I did. He was released from the hospital and went to stay in a hotel and was going to fly again but there was a crime in the hotel and he was a suspect. He was cleared. He has been asking me to pay his hotel bill for the last year and half so he can leave and get back to the states. He has no access to his funds in the states. Do people like this have access to assistance? Do they stay stranded? Or is it a scam?

I have almost allowed myself to send money...…….met a few people on line...……….with a pattern of statements......at least 3 of them: all have lost their wives via motor vehicle accident...3 years ago......left with a teen son...…...all have decided to go to some current military station(Afghanistan-doc; Syria-doc ; Yemen- major under the UN auspices)……for professionals, have poor spelling and grammar......one person ,I debated for a month with him about not sending money to get his child out of the hospital...….eventually he said his son was put in jail at 13 because the bill wasn['t paid...……..also commonly, they are unable to access their money but can send a video of them running in the country, one looked like it was in Florida) and yes tthey "love bomb" you.....I believe someone has made up scripts for them and use a technique that make you addicted to them...…...I read a relationship coach who taught women how to say or write things that makes a man ADDICTED TO YOU...…..same seems to happen with these guys..and when you google them, they don't appear...…..I've been googled and yes am in the internet, lots of times with my address as well!!!!!!! also 2 of them said they needed money because their child has an illness and need money for treatment

I have been reading all these scams, and I thought I was the only stupid, foolish, lonely woman to fall for a romance scammer guy. He says he worked for the UN, as a private dr, and he wanted to come home to GA. that his son was in a school, and wife got killed in car wreck, years ago, He is very good looking, and 56 years old, Morphy George, anyone heard of him..if so PLEASE LET ME KNOW...and I fell for his hook line and sinker, till I am so broke and ruined my credit rating, I went from 872 FICO score to 498, WE have been chatting for over a year, he persuaded me to send him money to get out of the camp he was in, to come home to meet me, he was getting fake UN I guess sending me letters to sign to get him out, I told him the UN says they furnished you everything you need, even to your bank accounts, he said he was under the UN as a private dr, he didn't get all those privileges, so dumb me, I sent the UN, so to say, money orders from banks, in the amount of $5,000 just the beginning, he was coming to the states, then three days later no word, he said was in a wreck going to airport and needed $10,000 to get medical needs met, could not send that, then the dr from that so called hospital sent an e-mail will work with him and give him some pain meds if I send them $2500, so I had to borrow that, got out of there got stuck in airport needed a ticket to come home, another $2500, lets just said after that he was coming home, said he had a lot of gold and the UK officials kept him, took him off plane, and locked him up, now needs money for a lawyer , his lawyer from the states, got put in jail so to say, for 7 months, finally got out of there got him a ticket to come to states, now this ought to knock some since into my head, but now got him a ticket for #2200, now he says was on plane getting ready to take off a passenger got sick, so they have grounded a plane, till he gets out the hospital, he said the UK airport is paying for everyone's meals putting them up till this many lives or dies, this has been going on for a month now...living off the airport...so now he told me he was entitled to $500,000 from UN, and he would have it sent to me if I would pay for it to be delivered..so at the present, he has bleed me dry, he is living in an airport in the UK, wants now another ticket to come in now, not wait for the plane that is grounded so to say, coz of this sick man...how can an airplane ground a plane and pay for all the passengers meals and rooms, I tell him that all the time, and paid out my ging ging to get that $500,000 delivered, and now nothing, I believe he got all that money, and not living in an airport, Asked him the other day what about your son, said he hasn't spoke to him in a while, coz he doesn't want him to know he has been in jail...I am learning, now ...and got to get him turned in somehow..I know I can't get my money back, but I can get even with him...anybody got some good suggestions....

Us there anyone out there have a similar story. A man contacted me on Facebook. His called himself Rafael. He was extremely good looking. He then asked to communicate in WhatsApp. After some doubts, I agreed. He was very personable and charming. He stayed he was a widow with a teenage son in England living with Rafael's mother. I fell for him quickly, which is unusual for me. Of course, he was very romantic and spoke of our love and our future. He purported to be a buyer and seller of crude oil. He began by asking for gift cards. Then he asked for me to wire money to help kickstart a business deal. Then when he was at sea, his ship was sabotaged by pirates. He said he had money and business documents that needed to be kept safe. He needed me to help him because he had no family in the States. I agreed. I have reason to regret this decision. Since I agreed , I have been threatened with notices forcing me to pay various taxes and money to purchase certificates to prove that I am not participating in money laundering and/or terrorist activities. It took me way too long to see that the initial money may never have existed and that I was scammed for approximately 30 thousand dollars. I have reported this. I hope to find out more soon.

Looks like I have been caught for a third time. A guy calling himself James Johnson matched with me on Tinder. Quickly moved to WhatsApp. Usual story..no parents, widowed, no children, working on a three week contract in Malaysia before coming over to UK. Has not asked how much I earn, or for any form of money as yet (in three weeks). Is supposed to be in UK next week (25th) but just got in touch to say they are evacuating the platform as there is a fire on board. He may not be in touch again, but loves me like no other etc. etc. I am now in a position of knowing this would happen just as we were about to meet, but at the same time hoping it’s not true. No more Tinder for me after this. I hate how they make you feel, but as others have said, I live in hope that there is someone genuine out there.

It’s happening with men too. Recently I had an Alvarado Smith try to get me to send Amazon cards after talking for 3 days! And I think I have another one actively trying. Her supposed name is Emily Lewis from San Antonio Texas. I think the Alvarado character said that by talking on Instagram she was endangering the mission because of cellular use, but then recommended Hangouts. I knew it was a scam early on from the poor English the person used. This new person is a little more involved. I’m wondering if I got moved up the ladder by scammers so they can try even more elaborate setups. We’ll see. I do like exposing them and then putting them in their place. Quite intriguing. Lol.

This guy is a scammer. Don’t waste any more of your time with him. And no personal information. Just block and report him to whatever site you met him on. In the future, if they say they are engineers, working on an oil platform, American soldiers, or doctors working over seas, single with a kid, (usually in boarding school) and something terrible happened to the mother. It’s a scam. It’s usually the same pattern.

I have practically the same exact story. A marine Lieutenant Michael Gibbs grew up in england moved to US when parents died, only child. British accent for the most part although it sometimes sounded off. In Qatar for 3 weeks (when asked why it's taking longer he says "the big man" is our president must have other things on his mind. He's now wanting to retire bc he has realized what's important in life, etc. very loving messages, called me "queen" "love" "empress" "babe", LOTS of love songs, talk about living together, getting married. At about the 2 month mark, he has this story about needing to retrieve some safe deposit boxes from Turkey bc the government is getting "creative" with foreign account holders. but he since he is active duty can't do it himself as it's against the rules. All he needs from me is to email the security liaison and be the contact person in the states for her to send contents (gem stones, bonds, cash, personal items of his parents) to. That's when i realized this is a scam. some warning flags before but this confirmed it.

The name he is currently going by is Harrison Roy. He claims to be of Turkish descent with a black father from Austin, TX. He claims a 6 year old daughter named Cindy. He says he's a civil engineer working with the UN government in Syria. Watch out for him. He's cunning and very good at sweet talk. He ask for money for his daughter's school, then his daughter has stomach cancer and he needs help paying for her surgery. Then his boss extends his contract and he needs $3500.00 to buy out if it. Then the plane leaves him and his daughter in Indonesia and he needs more money to get a plane ticket from there back to Austin. He's very cunning and he's a sweet talker. Ladies beware!

I don’t know if I’m being scammed or not, I’ve fallen hook line and sinker for a guy named Jack Harris. He says he’s 60 years old and has sent me a photograph of himself and we talk on the telephone and by messenger. We met online last Fall, and he told me this about himself. He was born in New Zealand and orphaned as a young child and spent time with foster parents until he was adopted by an American couple when he was 15. He joined the US Army at 18 and served in many warzones. He then trained as a surgeon with the Army and ended up saving many lives throughout his military career as a battlefield surgeon. He left the military in the late nineties and got married. He served as secret security for President George W Bush and President Clinton. His wife died of cancer six years ago leaving him with two children who are now fourteen and fifteen. He then decided to become a surgeon attached to the Peace Keeping Forces and is based in a jungle in Somalia just outside Mogadishu and his children are currently at boarding school at home in the USA. He has a lot of money but wants to keep working saving lives. The base is constant under attack from terrorists and he saves lives on a daily basis and is so needed that he cannot he spared for vacation. He tells me that I am his queen, his true love, his soul mate and we are meant to be together and as soon as he is allowed to leave Somalia, we shall buy a home together, be married and be together forever. I’m starting to wonder if it’s all too good to be true. But I’m lonely since my husband left me. I have money but nothing to spend it on and I so want a life with Jack.

I come from Germany Last summer, a man wrote to me on my blogger account from Instagram. After about 2 weeks we wrote on Hangout and later also on Whats App. He had a US number. I liked him, everything he wrote was credible. He is a single father of twins and lives in Tampa. He calls himself Gilbert James. Everything was great, I began to trust him and also to develop feelings. We wrote every day. Due to the time difference also at night. In August he flew to the UK for three months on business. He is employed there on an oil rig as a freelance design engineer. Before Christmas, he was going home. No problem so far. When a fire broke out on the drilling platform he wanted money for food because the kitchen was destroyed. From that point on, I was critical. First he wanted Bitcoins to pay the dealer for the food, I told him I wasn't doing that. Then he tried to make me feel guilty. I told him that I can send him food by mail but that I will not give him any money. He said that he can't receive packages on the rig. Then he asked for Steam and iTunes cards. I told him again that he gets nothing from me. We were arguing and I haven't heard anything in a long time. In December he had called me twice, but had not accepted the call. At the end of December he wrote me that he can't forget me and he loves me. Now and then we wrote. When I was on vacation in Florida in January I told him that I was in Tampa and that I wanted to meet him. He then said that he was still in the UK. I knew then that he wasn't who he said he was. I blocked and deleted it on Instagram and via WhatsApp. It's funny, even though I know that he is a cheat I long for the conversations that have taken place as they have been very good for me

My friend met a guy online who uses the name Steve Berg. All love and romance, two months of texting, phone calls...he claims to be a civil engineer from Sweden who is working in NYC, then called away fo Cyprus.( Cue the suspicion). texting daily and talking about meeting her...flying her to NYC to meet. Calls her “from Cyprus” asking her to check his Swiss Bank account for him because he is having trouble with his internet connection where he is staying. She logs in using the info he gives her (I wish she hadn’t) and the balance shows $7 million. Ok so who does that? My guess is it’s some kind of attempt to install malware on her computer and get Her personal info and passwords. I searched all the info she had on him and came up dry. Then I reverse searched is photo and found a bunch of hits on some gay Tumbler pages. The exact shirtless photo he had sent her! Beware. Has anyone else met this guy?

Im speaking to a person clamming to be named daniella white and seems to be stationed in Africa . Has sent me multiple pictures and Even a video of working out. But all in military attire. She asked me to buy her a card to continue chatting. Sad story about parents dying and joined military. But English is not good. And when I ask for real proof they attack me.

David William is a scammer ! Wants to tell me how much he loves me and quotes Ronald Reagan ( he misspelled it- so that was a clue). Then he asks me to go on WhatsApp , I’m too old for this but he keeps asking . Later he asks for over $35,000 to move Barrels of Oil to the US and later we will share a home and the money we make on the sale of this Oil. It’s a scam ladies! Don’t fall for his sweet talking!
