Image of cupid and heartNot everyone using online dating sites is looking for love. Scammers create fake online profiles using photos of other people — even stolen pictures of real military personnel. They profess their love quickly. And they tug at your heartstrings with made-up stories about how they need money — for emergencies, hospital bills, or travel. Why all of the tricks? They’re looking to steal your money.

As if all that isn’t bad enough, romance scammers are now involving their victims in online bank fraud. Here’s how it works: The scammers set up dating profiles to meet potential victims. After they form a “relationship,” they come up with reasons to ask their love interest to set up a new bank account. The scammers transfer stolen money into the new account, and then tell their victims to wire the money out of the country. Victims think they’re just helping out their soulmate, never realizing they’re aiding and abetting a crime.

Here are some warning signs that an online love interest might be a fake. They ask you to:

  • chat off of the dating site immediately, using personal email, text, or phone
  • wire money using Western Union or Money Gram
  • set up a new bank account

Did you know you can do an image search of your love interest’s photo in your favorite search engine? If you do an image search and the person’s photo appears under several different names, you’re probably dealing with a scammer. And if the person’s online profile disappears a few days after they meet you, that’s another tip-off.

Here’s the real deal: Don’t send money to someone you met online — for any reason. If your online sweetheart asks for money, you can expect it’s a scam.

Unfortunately, online dating scams are all too common. There may be tens of thousands of victims, and only a small fraction report it to the FTC. If this happens to you, please report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Good ole Michael Anderson, met him on Christian Mingle Jan 2016. At that time his gig was the Perdido Project. He was coming to meet me but had to go Turkey to get paid. Got stranded in Turkey when his passport and personal effects were stolen. Wanted me to give him money to fly home. Instead I bought a plane ticket with insurance. He refused the ticket and claimed I abandoned him in his time of need. Best $80 bucks I've ever spent.

I think I talked to the same guy. He told me his name was Michael Anderson and that he was an independent oil and gas engineer working for himself who had business in Philippines. When he supposedly traveled there from Scotland, he was losing his bit and needed to pay a lawyer $25,000 and asked me to send him the money to help. Guess what? He won and after receiving my money instead of disappearing had a nerve to confess what he did. He is back on fb again looking for another prey.

My guy was Dr Mark Williams from London, a medical surgeon working for the UN Peacekeeping Organization in Syria with an 8 year old daughter in a U.S. boarding school in Nebraska. He like some of my tweets then DM'd me casually. Started talking about how he was widowed and both his parents died many years ago. Very believable until I noticed his grammar became poor and very broken English. When I saw this scam I confronted him on Twitter and he became hostile and blocked me. I have since reported him to Twitter. Thanks to all for posting or I might have been scammed.

This sounds like a man who is scamming a neighbour of mine right now. He was to arrive here in Canada on Monday, and then all of them were leaving for Ohio in early April. He told my neighbour that he is stuck in Turkey with his daughter and needs money to get out. She started a GoFundMe page about 7 hours ago. I have his picture and would like to share the picture with others to see if this is the same person scamming other women. Thank you.

I was approached by someone (Wellington Bolt) funny, that's actually a name of hardware...claimed to be a widower, grandfather (handsome) of twin (young) girls, real parents gave him up, lived in an orphanage, adoptive parents passed, asked me to send his granddaughters cell phones, candy, etc. I declined. A week or two later, asked me to send $500 worth of steam cards through Wal-Mart. Supposedly he's from Queens, NY, but in Turkey, drilling for oil for Exxon Mobil. Claims to be a senior mechanical engineer. Unbelievable...

Not sure if you were interested in additional information from me, but he also had wanted me to email with his daughter Sarah Christopher. I would not provide my email, instead I asked for hers. He attempted a couple more times to obtain my email address. I continued to state he could share hers and I would reach out on Hangouts, which I did, knowing I'd be "chatting " with him. Finally I told him we were aware of his "story". He responded with "ok", then disabled his words with friends profile of Wellington Bolt. Hope this helps. Also, I wasn't able to post his picture. Gray hair, sometimes with black rimmed glasses. Also shared pictures from the ship supposedly.

Hi Shirly, Do you have any pictures of him, please share with me.I am having same situation recently.i meet a man on hangouts online dating sites. He claims he is an emergency doctor on oil and gas sector in rig of Los Angeles California with Norwegian Multinational company. He is very good looking and looks like a doctor in the picture. We fall in love immediately,so decide to meet.and he told me that I have ask his emergency vacation from the company.so I did and his company want me to pay all the cost for processing fee of 1850$ ,so I sended already last Friday(19/9/2020)and they want me to send cost for replacement another doctor. Now I realized that what biggest mistake I have done.He never give any personal information, talk or chat only in hangouts and Skype. Always spoke very sweet and calls me queen, Angel and honey. He said he also have a daughter, studying in boarding schools in Atlanta,Georgia and wife is died from cancer. I think is the same person. I request him to make video calls but he never want.We always talk on Skype and chat. Please aware of this man and never send any money like I did.
