Image of cupid and heartNot everyone using online dating sites is looking for love. Scammers create fake online profiles using photos of other people — even stolen pictures of real military personnel. They profess their love quickly. And they tug at your heartstrings with made-up stories about how they need money — for emergencies, hospital bills, or travel. Why all of the tricks? They’re looking to steal your money.

As if all that isn’t bad enough, romance scammers are now involving their victims in online bank fraud. Here’s how it works: The scammers set up dating profiles to meet potential victims. After they form a “relationship,” they come up with reasons to ask their love interest to set up a new bank account. The scammers transfer stolen money into the new account, and then tell their victims to wire the money out of the country. Victims think they’re just helping out their soulmate, never realizing they’re aiding and abetting a crime.  

Here are some warning signs that an online love interest might be a fake. They ask you to:

  • chat off of the dating site immediately, using personal email, text, or phone
  • wire money using Western Union or Money Gram
  • set up a new bank account

Did you know you can do an image search of your love interest’s photo in your favorite search engine? If you do an image search and the person’s photo appears under several different names, you’re probably dealing with a scammer. And if the person’s online profile disappears a few days after they meet you, that’s another tip-off.

Here’s the real deal: Don’t send money to someone you met online — for any reason. If your online sweetheart asks for money, you can expect it’s a scam.

Unfortunately, online dating scams are all too common. There may be tens of thousands of victims, and only a small fraction report it to the FTC. If this happens to you, please report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

My mother in law and aunt have both met men online. Story is seaman on oil ship with eletrical engineers. Wifes have died and kids are in boarding school overseas. They are planning on meeting this week after selling house.

I'm devastated my spouse of 17 yes met a girl on line first she lived in Texas then Egypt and for the last yr he has had 4 different banks CU's she tells him to set up a bank account then she supposedly deposit a check then asks him to take the money out and send it back to her in a western union it has ruined our 17 yrs.all I do is cry I can't stand the lies I would just want to end it they never have talked or met just texted something is wrong with this picture

I met a man last night who claimed he worked for an oil company out of Houston but never would say a name. I knew the minute I accepted a friend request from a stranger I had made a BIG mistake especially when he responded on Messenger almost instantly. He kept writing all these flowery prose about how important love is and how much he wanted to meet a woman who felt the same as he did. Blah,blah. He told me his daughter had convinced him to get on FB to find a new love. His wife had died 5 years ago and his daughter Lisa was in a boarding school in Florida. He lived in Ohio but worked for a company in Texas on an oil well out in the Gulf. Didn't seem to know anything about Hurrican Harvey. Never would answer a direct question. I cut it off fairly quickly last night but at 3:30 I got on my phone to check the weather and my FB was open. He started wanting to talk again but that time he could actually "talk" better. Spelling and syntax changed entirely. I answered one question then asked why he was up at that time (which was creepy!) he said he was an early riser and then asked what time it was. He also asked what the weather was like 'over there'. I turned off my internet and never responded. Told him this evening my internet went out. When I was out this evening as soon as I posted on my FB page he started in again. I told him I was on my way home and it would take sometime atleast an hour. That was at 8:06 at exactly 9:06 he started texting again. If I waited more than a minute to respond he acted all panicky. He kept sending more of these longs deep thoughts type of things that amazingly only took a few seconds to write. Ironically, he kept telling me how important honesty is to him. Must have said that a dozen times this evening and we only talked for about twenty minutes. Honesty and trust, what a joke. I basically just babbled about nothing really. Then he said he wanted my phone number. I should have all ready cut it off by then but I wanted to hear his voice. Interestingly enough he sounded like a Nigerian. He was all lovey dovey. Oh now he could dream about my and he would know how sweet my voice is. About the first thing I said to him was he was a fake and a scammer and not a very good one either. Then he started with oh baby, oh dear, oh honey bologna. I said I wanted to see a photo of him with today's date but his phone couldn't take pictures. The phone from work with a Mississippi area code for a Texas business. He wanted to ask me one question and I though it was going to be for money but he wanted me to wait until tomorrow. He said he would have his boss take a video and send it to me. I said no. Now or never. He said something about working on an oil well, in the river. Good grief! I said in a river? By then he was getting more than a little annoyed but acted hurt when I that I hadn't read his messages because he said he was in the ocean. I said no you said the Gulf. Plus he tried to explain they had deflated the oil well and moved it into a river before the hurricane since it wasn't attached to anything and could blow away What? I said I've been to the Gulf I know what oil RIGS look like and that was perposterus! (sp?)Then he started rattling about his mom and I couldn't understand much more than him begging me to keep talking to him until he sent a video. I said say something in Portugese but he kept making excuses. He didn't want to because he had moved to Ohio as a two year old with his mom. I asked if that's where he got his Nigerian accent. I could hear someone in the background telling him to say something that I wouldn't know the difference. So he said something and I didn't respond so he said he spoke in Portugese did I hear him and was I happy. He wanted to talk about retiring and moving in with me. Over my dead body! I told him that was NOT Portugese! And he asked if I spoke Portugese so I said yes. I don't but this really flustered him. I said send me a picture with today's date. By then I was even more ticked off. I knew it was a scam he kept begging me to wait until tomorrow because we were so good together. HA! So I told him I was hanging up and doing a reverse google search as soon as we did. The phone line went dead the poof, his FB account disappeared also. While we were talking I snapped the picture he used but I didn't get a picture of the girl he claimed was his daughter. That's what I feel bad about. This man and this girl, whomever they are are being used like this. I was a fool for responding! He wasn't a very good scammer but I probably didn't play his game correctly either. Thank you Dr Phil! One more thing, he asked me many times if I ever talked to anyone else I didn't know on FB. Maybe he wanted to see if I would figure him out. It was definitely creepy how he (or someone) always knew the minute I got on FB. Also, he would ask what the weather was like 'over there'. An odd way for someone in Houston to ask about the weather. Like I said he wasn't very good. He used the name Matt Holland and it looked like a picture taken on St Patrick's Day because it looked like the man was holding a green beer.

Mine said he worked for Chevron off shore rigs. Wife died 5 years ago Cancer. has a son and daughter in boarding school. Just went to Ghana for a oil convention. Made a speech on safety on rigs and two small oil companies awarded him 3 million for his speech. Needed to get it out of his hands ASAP before company found out. Wanted me to accept and hold on to for him. Was going to send it by a diplomat courier. I told him I refused to accept. He said he was crushed because when you love someone the way he loves me you would do anything for them no questions ask. I told him for the safety of never meeting him for my family I wouldn't do it.

Your story is similar to mine except I sent money through Western Union and Moneygram. I think American police FBI and Interpol should cooperate urgently to stop such scammers. There are victims all over the world with such silly surprises about United Emirates, China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Cambodia and Australia. Victims are from: Australia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Europe. why do the States wait instead of cooperating when they have the phone numbers, the emails and complaints from many countries? What a lack of efficiency and professionalism!

I totally agree. I sent all my information to DOJ. His email address, his phone number, his name used on Facebook. You would think with technology the way it is they would be in hand cuffed. I also think that these social media sites should be held accountable for allowing these scams. I feel like this is not getting the attention that it needs, like this isn't worth our time and small potatoes.

I wish I could believe you WERE A FOOL! Your story is almost identical to mine. I am crying now as I reply. My heart is so fragile as it is. I believed too that he is my perfect match, directly from God Himself! Part of me wishes I'd NOT find this site. I want him to be real with all my being. I'VE spoken with him via skype WITH video so I know his real face. I thought I knew his real heart. I've not sent any money - I don't have any! But I have still be very much scammed as far as it sounds from this site. I"m going to bed now so I can cry myself to sleep. I really thought I had my guard up enough to catch such a game. :( If you have read enough stories on this site, you have no option BUT to believe he is a scammer. Tis clear we are not the only ones.

Oh, Devastated, I am so sorry to hear your heartbreaking story. His story, his girlfriend of 7 years cheated on him. He is on a peacekeeping force in Ghana, West Africa. He lives in Miami and also lived in Michigan. I was joking with him when I asked his heritage when I said your are probably Polish or German. There large populations of both. He was actually from Poland came here when he 11. Yes, he told such sweet things. I split the $$ on a phone card. He texted me almost day and night. I sent him more $$ for a more expensive card. I am out $1,300. Same as you, I fell in love with him. After the money, he keep it up. I told him last night, I trusted him, but I can't send him more $$. He became angry. BLAH, BLAH BLAH. I have not heard from since. I really feel sick to my stomach. He sounds so wonderful, like your guy. I pray to GOD, that he not a scammer.

We have the same situation and I understand how you feel. I was just recently scammed by a fake US Army soldier Name Frank Edward base in Syria. I lost a total of $14,000 US dollars part of it was applied for the loan and the rest are my savings money. I can see all the signs of a scam but because I fell inlove with him I don't want to believe that my guy is a scammer. They are evil in reality once they got the money they want they will stop talking and chatting with you. Right now I don't know how to pay off the loan with a high interest rate. and I lost all my savings from the bank. Don't let him fool you again. They are all scammers with an ugly faces behind the pictures he is sending to you. Im totally broken hearted and broke. to the point that I have to cut off some of my bills and luxuries in life. I am so dumb I trusted my life with this man and promised me of getting married once he came back to US but he never show up they are not gonna show up but they will just keep their facebook accpount opened no emails and nothing. Don't let him fool you again and don't send money anymiore.

I want to tel l our story. Almost a year ago Richard Walker contacted me, he said he was an FBI agent and recovered the money I was scammed out of a couple years prior. So the past 11 months we have been chatting. He was bringing my money to me. I had to pay the fee's. He hit me up for taxes on the money 3 times, it came from S Africa. He had to return to Africa twice to get some certificate that had to be with the money. I had to pay for that. Every day there was something. I had to pawn every thing I owned. I lost my car and our apartment. It cost us everything. No i never got our money. He claimed to be stranded at our airport for 4 months now. I have to keep paying for him to stay there each month. I had to pay the security on the money etc. One BS story after another. I keep trying to call it quits but he won't let me. He claims to still be at the airport with my money. So he decided he was getting an inheritance his dad left him. He said he owed $1,000 left in fee's to pay then he gets it. He is supposed to be getting eight and a half million. He said it will give us enough money to last us forever. He wants me to send $600 to the attorney on Oct 1, 2016. He gave me the email address for the attorney so i can contact him about sending the money. I emailed him and he replied the next day. The email had all kinds of mistakes in it. He sent a copy of the inheritance certificate. It said his father was 59 when he deposited the money for Richard and the date of the deposit was 2011. There is no way, Richard said he is 54. So I googled the attorney and got his number and I called him to verify that he wrote the email. He DID NOT email me. I told Richard no i wouldn't pay the 600. OMG All hell broke loose, He has been calling, texting and emailing me. DEATH THREATS. He said if I don't pay the money on the 1st so he can get his money he is going to have us killed. Several people have been emailing us and threatening us. All the cops we contacted, the FBI all say its a scam. They have me so scared that they are really here I call the cops several times a day, I keep getting told its a scam and the SOB's are in S. Africa

Richard says he is in love with me and won't leave here to go back to NY. That's where he says he is from. He sounds African. I have changed my # and 3 days later he was calling me again. He claims to still be in Stockton Ca. He says he and a friend of his are watching us. The text I got last night from his friend/boss? He is very mean. I have talked to him a couple times on the phone. He also sounds African. He says my daughter is the target and he knows every place she goes. He also claims to be here. We are both scared and don't know what to do. We don't want to die. Last month I got a credit card in the mail with a $10,000 credit limit on it so they know our address. Also they said that card was a government card. They wanted me to buy 10 $600 cell phones Apple s6. They tried to make me use the card. My Ex cut it up and threw it away. They said they would arrest me. I asked for what? Not using the card and getting stuck with the bills? I did Not use the card. They are controlling my life. The hell with the money even if it's real...I no longer want it. I just want them to burn in hell for all they have done to us and leave us alone. According to the text I got last night Fred said we have till Friday to sent the $600 to the lawyer or we both die. I don't have a crystal ball so I can't find out where they really are or what is real and what isn't. I'm afraid that they really are here and they will get us for not sending my money to them. We have been to Stockton PD so many times and talked to officers. Last week we spent 3 hours there waiting to talk to someone. That cop wouldn't hardly give us a chance to say anything. She said it was a scam. The cops have been here two nights this week to talk to us. Before when we would refuse to send them money they acted psycho but as soon as I gave in and agreed to send them the money, they were nice again. But it was never enough money for them. Every time they picked up the money gram they demanded more. I'm disabled and need my money, I don't get much but they usually end up with all or most of it. This time I refused, I won't give in they keep saying they have plans for us and are waiting till Friday Sept 30th. They say we are going to suffer for not sending our money then they will kill us. I am so scared I think they are really here and they will really kill us. They all claim to be FBI agents. What the hell kind of cops are they to kill people just because they want to keep there money. PLEASE HELP, We don't know what to do, we don't want to die.

You say someone is threatening you and your daughter over the phone and email. You can choose to stop communicating with the people who are threatening you. You can block them on your phone, email and social media. If you think you are in immediate danger, call 911.

You said you got a credit card that you didn't apply for. That could mean that someone stole your personal information to get a credit card. You can call the credit card company and cancel the card, and it's important to go to IdentityTheft.gov.

IdentityTheft.gov is a secure federal government website. You can report that someone got a credit card in your name. You will get tips about what to do, like how to put a freeze on your credit, and how to check your credit report.

You can report a scam to MoneyGram (1-800-926-9400) or Western Union (800-448-1492) Tell the wire transfer companies what names these people are using, and the locations where they pickup money.

Maltipoo's2, we have the same story. I met a man and claimed to be a US Navy Captain base in Yemen. He requested me to receive his retirement card and send for his son schooling in NY because he has no relatives to receive his card. Of course I refused but he pleaded but he kept telling about his son who needs financial assistance. He said that his card is now ready to be sent to me with $4M on it. I really refused and that made him threatened me telling his voice is being heard and he will send someone to kill me even my country will suffer. To cut it short, I agreed to receive the Master Card. After I agreed, I was asked to email his bank and th bank demanded $500 USD for the shipment. I sent thru western Union. Then after they received my $500, I was asked again to send $4,500 because the diplomat carrying the Master card was held at airport and need clearance for the documents allowing them to bring the card to me. OMG ! when I was not able to send the money at the given date, I got a lot of threats from this fake US Navy named Capt. John Martins. It terrified my whole being unable to eat. This was happened in 2 years ago. I blocked him off and THANKS GOD ...NOTHING HAPPENED TO ME. I give Glory to God.

Oh My God, crazyann! we met the same guy, Frank Edward..Fake US Military stationed in Syria. He found me on Fb..as we went along and built a relationship he asked me to send $3,600 to the UN for the processing of his vacation leave to meet me. I did not send any because I dont have any. crazyann, I met a fake US military named Frank Edward. He met me on FB sending me good poems and alway called ,e "my Queen". He promised to come see me and marry me soon he gets out of the camp. He told me he needed $3,000 for his leave so that he could come see me. After I wan not able to send what he wanted...he was gone. Crazyann, I met that US Army Soldier Frank Edward who claimed he is in Syria but lately transferred to Africa. He sent me pictures of him even a picture of his own house in the USA. Everyday he's emailing me nice poems saying I'm his queen. He asked me to send $3,000 for the filing of his leave to come see me. I did not send any becaause I don't have any. Since then...he disappeared.

This guy is insane. He must be caught and sent to rot in jail. He also goes by the names Frank Lewis or Michael Lewis. He's a sweet talker and uses "my queen" and "baby" a lot. I tracked him down on the sight we 1st met when I recognised similar pictures. He uses the same lame stories abt bieng in the navy or army. When he realised he had spoken to me before and I refused to send him money he got angry and started insulting me. He said I had spoken to his friend and not him. Like seriously, all the pics were the same not to mention story.

This sounds similar to me. My future husband!!!!! Not. Now says he needs money as his son was in a terrible accident in Africa and has no way of getting money, even though he works for the UN. He is a widowed General too! I want to get to the bottom of this, i am so angry. It makes me feel so stupid to think he koves me. All the songs and pictures he has sent make me think he is very clever. And he looks good too.

I have been talking to somebody since july. Before him a scammer. This guy was on facebook with same name and I called him out. he said I am the real person my identity was stolen. he lives in new York. but then had to go to Alaska on a rig. he calls me everyday 2 hours minimum. sends me songs and pictures. son was in accident needs surgery and help to get him home. wants to be with me . I am so confused. is this happening to me again? he also says he loves me and plans to be here end of month. the other one was 7 months talking to . this guys says any man would not wait 8 months to see their girl. Hi scammers will always say the fake profile is legally them and someone else hacks them. In reality we all know it's not because no real person is just going to come across your profile add you as a friend and start with romantic words right away. I am sorry he's not the real deal.

I have a man who says he's a General in the army. He claims he wants to come visit but says I have to pick up his luggage at the airport or he can't come. I told him to just pack a carry on. Still waiting to hear what he's going to say next. This is my fourth time dealing with a scammer. Another wanted to have a package shipped to me. Another needed money for his son. Another had a problem with work and wanted money.

His son was sent off by the government for war duty 52 kids went for military duty his son became sick so he's needs me to send him money online, no way. He wE trying to make fall in love he'll im 62 years old no way he's from Indonesia and wants to marry me as soon as he start chatting with me, I googled this military stuff he said his son had to do and this amazing site here poped up and I immediately sent it to him he could not believe it. Hey I am going through something similar yet different been talking to person who claims he is military for over five months but not once has he asked me to send him money. He has offered to send me money but the banks refuse automatically saying its fraud from get go. Buy he isn't sending me money to cash and send back. He is sending me money for him to have when he gets back. However he isn't in the military data base when I looked up his name and where he said he was from which was Miami Florida there is no record of him by name by his age. So is there another way to find out if he is truly who he says he is or should I completely rid myself of him. We had talked about if we were still talking when he got home and get along face to face as we do on kik then maybe marriage could be in future but for now we vow to just be friends.

My friend has been talking to this guy he told her he is from Delaware but he does some type of contract work in Australia anyway he has ask her to open up a bank account to deposit in check in so he can come home back to Delaware but get this he want her to purchase the ticket I told her don't do it I feel it's a scam who would put they check in your account and they haven't even meet you and why he can't handle his own affairs he has also ask for a phone card for his son

You're right, that could be a scam. Some scammers find a person, and after they form a “relationship,” they ask their new friend if they can use their bank account. The scammer transfers stolen money into the account, and tells the victim to wire the money out of the country. The victims thinks she's helping out, but she doesn't realize she might be aiding and abetting a crime.

I've been talking to a soldier says he's overseas in Turkey. Wants me to send him money using only WU/MG but wants me to send it to Ukraine cuz he says it's to dangerous for him to pick it up where he is. I'm 99%sure it's a scam. But he sent me pics ID mail.mil email etc so why send money elsewhere? Please help. Thanks so much!

He says he works as an engineer for oil drilling company. His name is Andres, from France, widowed, daughter lives in England. First, he asked for iTunes cards, then he wanted me to call his connect to arrange for helicopter to fly from the oil drilling platform. He puts passion in his words, do not fall for it! I have his photos.

Hello ive been talking to this guys his name is mark and he added me to his instagram but soon he asked for my email address he says he is a widowed he claims to be from washington but he was supposedly working for apple company but suddenly he get a contract to Istanbul for oil drilling he says he has a daughter 6 year old and he has send me pics ohim with her everything was great until he got there abd suddenly he was charged with a 4,500usdlls when the contract was for over a million dlls he didnt have no money to pay that lil amount of money so he suddenly ask me for the money saying i was the only one ge could trust bit believe me i aint no dumb person i refuse to pay any cent he then a few days later said he got the money he is fine but since then stopped talking to me he was nevr rude with me or anything but then a few days later he saif he had another problem that he got his money but cause in Turkey they have so many problems at the bank that he wanted me to put his money in my bank account so when he finishes his work he coukd buy a house for us here but i refused to do that and he then stopped completely talking to me ! It will be nice if you can sharw his pictures

Bestsketch: this sounds exactly like the person I just stopped talking with and made a police report about! He's widowed, in Alaska as the ship engineer for an oil ship finishing up his last project before retiring. Asked me for iTunes cards then asked me to deposit $5000 into an account to finish payment for the helicopter to deliver equipment to the ship. He sent many photos of himself from around the world, is very attractive with dark hair, a short beard, & friendly smile. I cannot find ANY information about him. He says its because he paid to have all of his information taken off of the internet. I bet this is the same person! He contacted me on Match the 1st day I signed up a couple weeks ago (today is 8/25/17). He uses a different name, but has a French accent.

Is he really handsome with a great body? The guy I am talking to is incredibly handsome and loves to send pics of himself. I have vide chatted with him several times so I know its him. But he also claims to be an engineeer from an oil drilling company.
