Your Social Security number is an important key for an identity thief. Scammers want it, and they think of all sorts of ways to trick you into giving it away.

Here at the Federal Trade Commission, we’re getting reports about calls from scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. They say there’s been a computer problem, and they need to confirm your Social Security number.

Other people have told us that they have come across spoof websites that look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card – but these websites are actually a setup to steal your personal information.

If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond. It’s most likely a scam.

Here’s some tips to deal with these government imposters:

  • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number – unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.
  • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.
  • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.

If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY), and then tell the FTC about it.

SS admin should provide a scammers id packet to all those that are new to receiving SS benefits. Being new to receiving benefits, I hesitated to receiving the call from 800.772.1213. (Robo stating that my SS# was engaged in fraudulent activities.) Being a legit SS phone # I nearly went through with the call. I am now waiting on a call back from SS to make sure as to whether or not they have any information about my SS#.

Just (11/23/2018, 2:40PM EST) got a robo-call from (spoofed?) number 1-800-772-1213. Clearly a scam call, as it's highly doubtful that gov't employees are working on Black Friday, but also notable errors in presentation of information. The pre-recorded message stated to "Press 1" to speak to an agent. Obviously, I just hung up the phone, but it can be scary when an official number is being spoofed. This needs to be investigated and stopped.

I just recived a call today telling me my account was frozen because it was deemed suspicious. When I was transferred through. They asked me for my name, so I only gave him my first name. He asked for my SSN, when I told him not until I find out whats going on, he hung up on me instantly. I almost fell for it because it was from the actual social security phone number.

On Nov. 23rd, I received a call on my cellular with the caller ID from Social Security Admin. toll free number 1-800-772-1213 which went to voicemail. They left a message stating that my SS check was being suspended because of illegal drug activity. I get scam calls and just ignore them just as I did this one and erased it. Today I tried to sign into My Social Security and says it I can't access it because I tried to login too many times when I haven't logged on in months.

I have received 2 calls this morning from (915)799-0459; stating that legal enforcement action has been filed on my social security number for fraudulent activities. I have also received the IRS calls stating they are going to freeze my accounts and arrest me if I don't send them an odd amount of money right away, and I could not hang up the phone...So sick of these scammers.

I received a call from # 615-375-3278 (Tennessee #) and they left a messaged stating that my SS# has been involved in a fraudulent and criminal activity and if I do not call them back that they will suspend my SS#. I also work for the Government and I am smarter than them. I texted back to that # this: WARNING! You have reached the Federal Bureau of Investigations Fraud Detection Unit. You are a FRAUDULENT caller and Your number is FRAUDULENT and you have been recorded in the Federal Government database. You also have been reported to the SSA Federal Investigations Unit, the SSA Inspector General, and the Federal Trade Commission. CEASE and DESIST your activity -you have been warned! Then I called/went online and reported the phone number

I got a robo call from 202-871-5696 today from a person claiming to be an Agent with Social Security and it said there was fraudulent activity on my account and to call them back. Caller id and *69 show the same number but I will not call. I figure if Social Security wants to contact me, they can use the post office. I was going to report this to SS, but there is no point as phone numbers are spoofed all the time and until the phone companies broadcast correct and verifiable data thru to the consumer, nothing can be done. The government does not want to fix problems. The politicians would have nothing to run on.

I just got this message from an Officer Gary Cole it was an automated call exactly the same. Of course I got scared when they said they will start legal proceedings. I called the number back and a thick accented Indian gentleman answered the phone, at that point I hung up. I can breathe a sigh of relief that this isn't legit as I was scared. Should we report this somewhere?

On Tuesday, November 27 I received a call from 210-880-4980 at 11:46 am and 11:47 am. Here is the message left: Filed on your social secrity number for fraudulent activities. So when you get this message kindly call back at the earliest possible on our number before we begin legal proceedings that is 210-880-4980. I repeat 210-880-4980. Thank you and have a nice day. I called the number at 12:04 pm and someone answering the phone identified themselves as Officer (name). Could not make out name or anything after "Officer" too much background talking. I hung up and blocked the caller. I now have my voice messages on my cell in text form so I can see and copy exact message.

I missed a call and later checked my voicemail. A recording stated, " You have a legal proceedings enforcement action filed on your social security number for criminal activities. Please call our office before we begin with legal proceedings. " I returned the call from the number on my caller ID: 410-734-2446. When I called the number, a man with an accent answered stating I had reached a federal social security administration. The man immediately proceeded to ask for my name and social security number. I told him I dont give out my number over the phone and that I would be calling the social security board direct. I hung up. I remember years ago, I was late on a bill. The company hired another company to threaten me for payments or, "I will send the police to arrest you". The repeated calls became very irritating. I plan to report to the ftc and call Social Security direct.

Yeah, just received the same call from Dallas,Texas, although when I called back the guy told me they were in San Antonio. Same thing~ said I would be arrested and that my social would now be "frozen." Kept asking for my social. I called back a few times and either the call wouldn't go through or I would get disconnected, or it was busy. And yes, a ton of background noise with a lot of people all talking at once. Sounded much more like a telemarketing call-center of sorts. Hope this helps out.

These idiots called me on the 21st of November and left a voicemail. I knew it was a scam cause the recording sounded like they were using the "Speak and Spell" device E.T. used to "phone home".
