Your Social Security number is an important key for an identity thief. Scammers want it, and they think of all sorts of ways to trick you into giving it away.

Here at the Federal Trade Commission, we’re getting reports about calls from scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. They say there’s been a computer problem, and they need to confirm your Social Security number.

Other people have told us that they have come across spoof websites that look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card – but these websites are actually a setup to steal your personal information.

If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond. It’s most likely a scam.

Here’s some tips to deal with these government imposters:

  • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number – unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.
  • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.
  • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.

If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY), and then tell the FTC about it.

Just received a call from SSA automated system suggesting there "may" be a security breach on my SSN. I listened to the automated recording, but did not press 1 to speak with anyone. This fraudulent activity has really gotten out of hand. I wish people would spend this same energy inventing tools and processes for the good. The world would be a far better place.

I received an automated call from 347-474-0218 (also the phone number in the message). It was something about Social Security Administration and fraud and a problem and that I needed to call them immediately. Also, something about having answered the phone that I was legally on record of having received the message and something about consequences of ignoring it.

Don't call this number 1-325-999-9745. A scratchy robot voice said that illegal activity as been associated with my social security number and that I need to call that number or action will be taken. Be sure to list the number they want you to call. This way people will know it is part of this scam.

I received a phone call 2 times today from (920)350-9946. I refuse to answer random numbers anymore so they left a message telling me my social security has had some fraudulent activity. Call them back or else more action will be taken like arrest (not exact words but similar.). So sick of these fake callers. Leave me alone. Had the scam IRS people do the same.

I got the same kind of call, though they left a different call-back number: 929-314-4846. Also of note is that the voice is clearly computer generated.

I repeatedly have been called from 1(559)316-0504 saying that my SSN has had suspicious activity and will be cancelled. They urge me to return their call at the same number. I checked online and there were many similar complaints about the exact same call. Clearly a robocall scam.

Said they are from the Social Security Administration and that they have legal enforcement action filed against my social security number for fraudulent action. The message tells me to return the call before they start legal proceedings against me. The number is 214-216-2541. Had called three times last Friday December 2nd. Didn't answer phone first two times, so they left a voice mail message. Answered the third time and heard the above which is the same message from the voice mails they left.

Official sounding voice informed me that Social Security Administration would suspend my SSN within the next 24 hours. Also that the FBI would be arresting us immediately. He said we were to call 1-281-674-8033 in order to clear up the matter. An obvious scam and we will report it to SSA and FBI. Idiots.

Someone called me from this number 205-588-8924,left a message to call back. I called back. They said they were from the Social Security and that my number was given to them as I have been charged with fraud. He kept asking me for my social security number to verify who I was. He told me I wouldn't have another chance to talk with anyone after today and to give him my social security number so he could tell me the charges against me. I told him this call made no sense and when I said I would call my local office, he said they wouldn't be able to answer my question. I told him I was not giving my number over the phone. He said he would call back later, but he didnt. I blocked his number. I never experienced anything like that before. After talking with my son, I'm so glad I did not give my personal information.

Tried to call the [real] SSA number to check out the missed call. Using the callback feature it did not go through, confirming it was a scam. But dialing the SSA number took me to a routing nightmare, the automated voice finally asked me for... you guessed it, my SSN. A bit creepy, since that's what the scammer wants. Then it told me I had a 35 minute wait time. Probably the real deal, right? Scammers won't make you wait 35 minutes.

Call from SS office 800.772.1213 for the 2nd time this morning. I answered the 2nd call and pressed #1 to speak to "An Officer." Got a call from the official SS 800 number with caller ID saying Social Securtiy... then an automated scare message about suspending my assets and ss number. pushed the number as directed. got a heavy accented male who, when I questioned the authenticity of the call was quite aggressive - saying my money and ss will be frozen in 15 minutes if you don't believe who they are. then, he hung up. crazy when you see the caller id name and phone number are correct. But, definitely a scam. And trying to call the real number is absurd: 90 minute wait to talk to someone. leaving a fraud note on their site required pages of info to be given... ridiculous...
