Your Social Security number is an important key for an identity thief. Scammers want it, and they think of all sorts of ways to trick you into giving it away.

Here at the Federal Trade Commission, we’re getting reports about calls from scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. They say there’s been a computer problem, and they need to confirm your Social Security number.

Other people have told us that they have come across spoof websites that look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card – but these websites are actually a setup to steal your personal information.

If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond. It’s most likely a scam.

Here’s some tips to deal with these government imposters:

  • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number – unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.
  • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.
  • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.

If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY), and then tell the FTC about it.

All of you commenters that leave numbers here, please fill out the proper forms to report your calls. This spot is just for comments, it is not a report. The report is very easy to do and they have provided a handy link in their article. I got the call from 'Officer Barnes ' today. I did not talk to her. ;-) I don't have caller ID so don't know what the number was pretending to be.

Got a scam call from 210-361-3990 on 7/2, said some garbage about investigation and such. Whoever it was, was not even smart enough to have my correct SS number! Ha! The laugh is on that goofy head! Should be easy for a government employee to trace such as this to a phone company, then to the phone company customer to stop such nonsense as this.

got a call from this number (206) 442-7393 that said I was being investigated by the Social Security Admin. and that the Sheriff was on his way to pick me up. It said to press the number 1 to speak to a Sheriff... Really? Can't they be more creative than this?! Who or where can I report this to? I so wish these scammers could be caught and brought to full justice!

Received call today from (202) 552-1549, stating that my SS# had been used for fraudulent activity and I needed to contact them immediately or a warrant would be issued for me. I sort of half listened to the call because I knew it was a scam when the recorded lady with the foreign accent started talking. I get so many calls from; Dell, Microsoft, Card Services, the IRS, all scammers, sometimes I talk to them and play their game, sometimes I don't want to be bothered.

Unsolicited call at 11:54am from 800 772 1105. Caller stated was from SSA and needed verification (all my personal info) for SSA benefits. Since I'm not receiving any, strong instinct they were phishers/scammers - so I played them for awhile. I think they finally realized they were being played and they promptly hung up. Reverse dial gets "mailbox full" response.

I wonder how many numbers my cell provider will allow me to block? So far I have blocked about 40 numbers coming from different area codes but mostly 469. Unfortunately all this (along with a flood of junk mail offering me Medicare supplements) started about 7 days after I created an identity on the Medicare website. Could be a coincidence but I have a feeling someone in SSA/Medicare Division is selling information to spammers.
