Your Social Security number is an important key for an identity thief. Scammers want it, and they think of all sorts of ways to trick you into giving it away.

Here at the Federal Trade Commission, we’re getting reports about calls from scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. They say there’s been a computer problem, and they need to confirm your Social Security number.

Other people have told us that they have come across spoof websites that look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card – but these websites are actually a setup to steal your personal information.

If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond. It’s most likely a scam.

Here’s some tips to deal with these government imposters:

  • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number – unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.
  • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.
  • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.

If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY), and then tell the FTC about it.

This same trend continues; getting a dozen calls a day from various NY and TX based numbers claiming my SSN has been "associated with fraudulent activity" (also with bad grammar) and "press 1 for assistance". Keep blocking each number as it comes in but they just rotate to a new one. DO NOT ANSWER! Once they know you are a live number, they just keep hitting you. Made the mistake once on accident and they made a deliberate point to even say "you called us" (which of course i did not) and immediately hung up. Wish there was a way to put a stop to this. Seems never ending.

Earlier today, got a call from 209-813-8729 saying that my SSN was "compromised", i.e. allegedly used by someone to find out my name, address and at least one bank account no./credit card info (ID theft), which was used to rent a car; the car was supposedly found at the "Texas border", and was allegedly linked to drug trafficking and money laundering. Wound up talking to 3 different people (one of them, supposedly a sheriff, gave me a "badge" no., and another one supposedly with the DEA gave me an employee no.; the other one supposedly gave me an SSA employee no.); they said my SSN would be frozen by the government, that I should secure my assets/freeze my accounts, and they would have to issue me a new SSN (the old one being "blacklisted"). They gave me a crime case no. and an arrest warrant no., and said someone would be showing up at my front door to take me to jail(?!?) That hasn't happened...so far.

I have received over 6 calls from (631) 902-7501 saying if you want to hear about the suspicious activity coming from your social security number, press 1... Needless to say I didn't press 1. In my opinion, if you press 1, it'll allow them to somehow access your phone and collect whatever information you have. Hang up or save as scam so you don't answer again. I've heard if you respond sometimes, they'll record your responses and use them against you as well.

I received a telephone call from 469-839-6432, I spoke with Agent Harold Wallace, case #TX7010, badge number DC56214, stating that my personal information was used to rent a car, and open numerous bank accounts. An abandoned car was found on the side of the highway and inside the car were drugs, and bloodstains. The person on the phone said they were from the social security agency and they said that they realized I was not a criminal but they needed my statement, then they transferred me to the DEA and agent Dennis Dunn told me that they were going to freeze my bank accounts and that I needed to get dressed and go to my banks, also, he informed me that I was to keep this line open and he would give me instructions on what to do or say once I was in the car on the way to my banks. I told him I was not going to my banks. After I told him I was not going, the line went completely silent. Has anyone ever had this happen to them?
