Looking to start a new relationship? For some, that may mean meeting a new love interest online. Word to the wise: sometimes it’s best to lead with your head and not your heart.

Millions of Americans use dating sites, social networking sites, and chat rooms to meet people. And many forge successful relationships. But scammers also use these sites to meet potential victims. They create fake profiles to build online relationships, and eventually convince people to send money in the name of love.

The Federal Trade Commission receives thousands of reports each year about romance scammers who create fake online relationships only to steal their victims’ money.

Unfortunately, an online love interest who asks for money is almost certainly a scam artist.

The FTC’s new infographic, developed with the American Bankers Association Foundation, lists common signs of online dating scams and what to do if someone you meet online asks you for money.

Below are some tips to identify a real romance versus a scammer cruising for a target.

Online Dating Scams. Has an online love interest asked you for money? That's a scam. Scammers know millions of people use online dating sites. They are there, too, hiding behind fake profiles. Signs of a scam: Professes love quickly. Claims to be from the U.S., but is overseas for business or military service. Asks for money, and lures you off the dating site. Claims to need money — for emergencies, hospital bills, or travel. Plans to visit, but can’t because of an emergency. $220 million lost in 2016. $56 million lost in 2012. Reports to the FBI tripled over 5 years (4,476 reports in 2012; 14,546 reports in 2016) What to do: Slow down — and talk to someone you trust. Don’t let a scammer rush you. Never wire money, put money on a gift or cash reload card, or send cash to an online love interest. You won’t get it back. Contact your bank right away if you think you’ve sent money to a scammer. Report your experience to: • The online dating site • Federal Trade Commission: ftc.gov/complaint • Federal Bureau of Investigation: ic3.gov. Learn more at ftc.gov/imposters and aba.com/engagement

Please share this information with others. Victims may be embarrassed to talk about their experiences, but you can help. A simple phone call, email or text, saying “Look what I just found” and sharing this information may make a difference in someone else’s life.

Anyone talking to someone named Chris/Hyun? He said he was half Korean/half American, moved to South Korea almost two months ago, estranged with his American dad and his Korean mom’s dead, broken up with girlfriend who was a drug addict three years ago and now just started working at an oil rig in Turkey a week ago for 21 days. Hasn’t ask for money yet though very quick with saying I love you and wanting to be in a relationship.

I have a friend who has been scammed out of more than $20K by a guy named "Darrell Wagner" who claims to be a German American working in Turkey as a building contractor. For over a year she has been sending him money and now he is sending her money for her to turn it into bitcoin. All of this is supposedly so he can pay his workers and taxes he owes the Turkish government. He begged her for money almost immediately after "meeting" her online and claiming that he couldn't access his bank accounts in the states. The bank where she does business tried to talk her out of doing this but she is "in love." He even told her once that he was coming home to Portland and she went to meet him and he never arrived. Then she didn't hear from him again for several weeks until he need more money. No explanation as to why he never showed up. Is there anyone else out there experiencing the same lies?

Hi - I was just scammed by someone named Robert Rutter. Also apparently in Turkey but North Cyprus and he needed money to pay for his hotel so he could come home and fix his locked bank account. For me it didn't get to the point of sending money because the minute he asked I knew something wasn't right so I looked into it more and realized it was a scam.

I was just scammed by a guy on Match.com with a linked in account saying he’s from Italy. His name is Matthew Alberto. I am so shamed. I’m a recently divorced mom of 2 out of a 12 yr abusive marriage. He swooned me and told me he loved me and made an oath to love me forever. Within a week of meeting him online he traveled for work and said he needed $5000 to help him with a biz deal. He said he was a Christian and I fell madly in love with him. Foolishly I not only sent him that $5k but an additional $42k for other requests. He depleted me of my entire savings and expanded me for everything I have. I’m devastated. I reported out to the USA.gov and federal trade commission. Waiting to hear. He asked me to send wires - international. I can hardly believe this. I feel so ashamed. Please let me know of you’ve heard of him.

Match.com, “Walter Jeff Ross” supposedly lives in Cincinnati from the UK. Went to Johannesburg for business, said he was robbed and needed “funds” that he would repay to me. I totally fell for this guy, but this made the hair stand up on the back of my neck. There’s no way I’d send money to someone I didn’t know. But believe me, he’s very, very good at romance. Poetry, music, love letters, over the course of 10 days. We spoke a little on the phone and he did have an English accent. I was obsessed but not stupid. I’m broken hearted, but also angry and try to focus on the lesson learned. I understand how easily it is to get scammed and do not beat yourselves up if it happened to you. These people are pure evil.

I have been on hangout with John Andry for about six weeks. He is in the Army and deployed to Iran. He stated that he couldn’t talk on the phone because of the sensitivity of his mission. He finally asked me to send money by Bitcoin because his son needed a new computer. I declined and he got upset and said that I didn’t care about him or his son. I’m not communicating with him anymore. We met on Plenty of Fish.

Ask the person to send you a specific picture, for example, them taking a sip of coffee or tugging their earlobe. If they can't produce the picture for any reason, it is a scammer is your best approach. Bottom line, DONT SEND MONEY until AFTER youve met the person in person and have actually established a relationship with him or her.

Not that crazy, Micheal Gillette saw me on LinkedIn and asked to be friends, but was leaving on a business trip to build a school in South Africa. Left on the trip in January and as soon as he got the airport he lost his wallet and needed $2500 to get supplies out of the port. He loved me deeply and have never met me. I am still receiving calls from him. He has being there for more than 3 months and still call me to help him . Those shipments still in the port . Now an added trouble for him. He owes the hotel and they took his passport and he needs $1500 to pay the hotel. Every day he would texted or call. I knew about catfish, so I did not send him a dime.

I am currently in a relationship with a scammer. And, folks if you only knew how painful it is for me to say that. The woman I am in love with is a student In university working on her second degree. I am more than 30 Years older than “her” which she claims is one of the reasons she is attracted to me. (I know right). It was the age difference that initially made me hesitant to establish a relationship with this young but she overcame that objection. It wasn’t long until I offered to send her money to purchase food and supplies. Soon I was sending her thousands per week. I became frustrated at one point because the Cash App we were using allowed only $5000 In transfers per week and I was having difficulty getting money to her fast enough. Soon everything was gone. This past week I applied for a Home Equity loan. She is very good. Nearly everything she tells is verifiable. There are a few holes in her complicated and intricately detailed backstory for example I discovered her IG account in Hebrew under a different name and with 250k followers; I found a discrepancy in her date of birth which was actually 10 younger than she claimed . I confronted her every time I discovered anything I thought was in conflict with a story line I believed but she has always been very skilled at explaining any discrepancy and folded it into her storyline. She is so skilled that I will end up apologizing for doubting her. Twice we have “argued” and I have broken it off without her. I would tell her goodbye and then block all access she has to reach me. Each time I have reconnected with her after a few days because my life without our near constant texting was bleak and depressing. I understand this “relationship “ has become my addiction . I place “relationship “ in quotes because I have never met her, we have spoken only once on the phone - to “verify” she was real. I am writing now because I sense she and I are at endgame. My refi loan will be approved or not. I will send her the money she “needs” or I won’t;; if she is sincere, and truly is my gift from God, then she will complete her studies and come to me. If on the other hand, this is the scam. I suspect it to be , I will not hear from her again since I have nothing left to give. My intention for writing this post was to serve as a “Me Too” type message but it turned out more as testimonial. I don’t apologize for the length however because it was your choice to read. The truth is the drama and intrigue of my relationship with my scammer could fill volumes. Thank you for letting me share my story.

I also was in contact with a guy from Match.com whose name was David Wilson. He first told me he lived in a nearby town, which I ended up finding was not true, he lived Grand Rapids, MI. He is originally from Germany and has lived in the States for several years. He is a gemologist (jewelry designer) by trade who want to open up a jewelry store in a town nearby. Now he is Ghana, he got his gold bars bought and now needs to ship them to the States. He also told me he had malaria and was in the hospital, he showed me picture of myself and he lost a lot of weight due to the fact he has no money and his checking account is frozen because he was visit his sick mom, and she was in hospital. Now he says he is in Ghana, and the company he bought the gold bars is going to put him in jail because he didn't give them the money for the shipment of the gold bars back to the States. He told me he loved me and want to marry me when he gets home.

I’m reading through all these emails and can’t believe the level of deception in this world. I tried online dating for the first time and got scammed. He was charming loving, told me everything I wanted to hear. Emailed me and called me. It was very passionate and romantic. He went by Louis Doran. Said he was half American half Norwegian and same here at 14. Said he had a 25 years old daughter and his wife died 5 years ago. We had romantic conversation on the phone it got really hot. He texted me constantly to ask me how I am that he can’t wait til we’re together. He told me he was flying to Poland to sell a property. When he allegedly got their he was taking money out of his account and his ATM got stuck. He needed to get money out to pay the taxes on the property. He gave me very long and detailed information. Ha said he was trying to get everyone back home to send him money so he can make the deal go through. He even made me log onto an account for him because he had no internet connection, to check a transaction date to make me think he has alot of money. It was all orchestrated. I realized when all this went down that this guy could be a fraud. I told him I don’t have any money Til the end of the month. I wanted to see how far he would take it. Every time I would try calling him by skype he would say there’s something wrong my with his camera so I couldn’t see his face. I would ask him to take a picture and text it to me. He would allegedly send it but it wouldn’t go through. Too many lies. None of it making sense to me. This morning he texted me again and asked how much I can send him that the seller has given him til Saturday. I told him I don’t have money and it’s not the end of the month. His tone got pushy. And I realized that all my suspicions were right. And I cut off communications with him right away. I blocked him on my email and phone. Changed my password. I don’t know what else to do. It’s a very vulnerable feeling especially knowing he has photos of me. He has my name phone number and email address. It’s pretty upsetting. But the worst damage is mental and emotional. It’s embarrassing and degrading. But You are all not alone. They use people like us who are truly looking for love and destroy our sense of hope and beliefs in humanity. Don’t let it destroy you. It happens to alot of people. Smart people. I never thought it could happen to me. Don’t let it change your dreams. That’s all we have. These people are the scum of the earth. They should all die of covid and burn in hell.

Texts in broken English, says he is from Houston and works on an Exxon rig off of Athens. Water me to send his son a laptop and Xbox. Got mad at me when I questioned him. Is on Hangouts. The second guy is Joe Cross, works for Shell on rig in Tokyo. His wife and son died during childbirth, wanted an iTunes card. Third guy is Peter Lucas, Belgian. On rig off Scottland. Has 13 year old daughter in NJ. Says he quit his job for me but doesn’t have money to get back to States now, Bank issues, lost credit cart, yada yada. I met a guy on scrabble go. He began chatting with me. Said his wife died 3 yrs ago of cancer. Has a 14yr old son Jerry who is staying with Nanny in Huston Texas. He is originally from Ireland. Goes by the name Lawrence Louis. Suave talker. Begs me to go on whatsapp or hangouts. Has no family...just his son. About 2 weeks or less he ask me to send him game cards for his son who is so unhappy and lonely. Asked him how much game cards were. He wanted 5 of them at 100. Each. Just so he could put a smile on his sons face. i told him his son was spoiled and should learn you dont always get what you want in life. I told him i only had 27.00 in bank. He then comes up with the plan of wiring me the money to my bank. Then sending money to nanny. I asked him for nannys address. He was to email her for it and give it to me.What!! You dont know the address of where your son is at? Hmm. He asked again for bank acct. I said no not until he tells me nannys address...still waiting to see what lie he comes up with for that. Oh and he works as a contractor for Shell on an oil rig in london. "Its very dangerous" but God is helping him. Very convincing fellow. Looked him up on facebook, which he denies knowing how to get fb account. Anyway there is a guy on fb with same name and story. But pux doesnt match Lawrence claims he is shocked by this...hmmm. Also he doesnt answer alot of my questions. Always asks me what i had for dinner. ? Or what i am doing right now. ? Didnt get on whatsapp or hangout but gave him my email address. Wrote a nice piece about himself an almost too good to be true bio of his hobbies, likes and dreams. I have been very coucious with him. Just hope he can not get important info on me through fb or email address. So happy i found this site and read all these similar stories. Hope this can help others as well. Thank you!

I have been talking to this guy Christian Mathieu Leung, saying he is presently Kabul, Afghanistan f or a special mission. Claims his wife died of cancer and he has two kids and a nanny is watching them in North Dakota. We have been talking for almost a month now and he asked me to marry him and needed someone to care for his two kids and he needed someone. He asked for my email so we can email each other and asked me to download the hangout app, which I gave him my email and downloaded hangouts. I fall for so easily because he is very handsome and such a nice guy. So I told him yes I will marry him. Then he told me okay well I needed to write a letter to the United Nations for an emergency leave for him which I did and sent to UN. UN emailed me back say that I would need to choose the amount of months I wished to spend time with him and they gave three options 3 months, 6 months or 9 months, and there will be a fee for each months. I choose 3 months and I paid United Nations $2,850. After I responded back to UN about his time being with me they now sent me another email that they are finalizing his last step for getting him home to me. Now they are requesting for me to send $12,450, for his transportation home for a military private jet and for his medical expenses before they can let him come home to me... But $12,450 for his transportation???? Isn't that too much...now got me thinking like uhmmm does it really costs that much??? help

Met Jacob Morris on Tinder. Profile said he was a Swedish widower. Architect engineer as a profession. Good looking man, 62 years old, tall very large upper body with massive biceps. Silver grey hair moustache and goatee. Wife died four years ago from breast cancer, has one daughter who lives in Australia and two granddaughters. After chatting on Tinder for a couple of days, he said he removed his profile because I was the one! Didn't want to be on the Tinder anymore because he was madly in love with me. What a joke. He had to fly to Dubai to complete a project which was a large guesthouse. He said he had to book a private jet to fly there because of covid-19. 3 weeks after he was in Dubai, he sent me pictures of the project. He said he was attacked at an ATM buy 3 local men. They stole his wallet and identification. He is asked me for $5,000 Canadian to be sent to him in Bitcoin. Like I may be dumb but I am not stupid. Wouldn't send him $0.05! He said he couldn't get out of there until he paid his workers and he was afraid for his life because he thought they might attack him for non-payment. I told him a man of his profession with that type of project shouldn't need to ask anybody for $5,000. He should contact his bank and make other arrangements. He told me he only has an offshore account. What a joke. And here I thought I hit the jackpot! Just goes to show you can't trust anybody these days. Ladies, if this one rings a bell stay away!!
