Looking to start a new relationship? For some, that may mean meeting a new love interest online. Word to the wise: sometimes it’s best to lead with your head and not your heart.

Millions of Americans use dating sites, social networking sites, and chat rooms to meet people. And many forge successful relationships. But scammers also use these sites to meet potential victims. They create fake profiles to build online relationships, and eventually convince people to send money in the name of love.

The Federal Trade Commission receives thousands of reports each year about romance scammers who create fake online relationships only to steal their victims’ money.

Unfortunately, an online love interest who asks for money is almost certainly a scam artist.

The FTC’s new infographic, developed with the American Bankers Association Foundation, lists common signs of online dating scams and what to do if someone you meet online asks you for money.

Below are some tips to identify a real romance versus a scammer cruising for a target.

Online Dating Scams. Has an online love interest asked you for money? That's a scam. Scammers know millions of people use online dating sites. They are there, too, hiding behind fake profiles. Signs of a scam: Professes love quickly. Claims to be from the U.S., but is overseas for business or military service. Asks for money, and lures you off the dating site. Claims to need money — for emergencies, hospital bills, or travel. Plans to visit, but can’t because of an emergency. $220 million lost in 2016. $56 million lost in 2012. Reports to the FBI tripled over 5 years (4,476 reports in 2012; 14,546 reports in 2016) What to do: Slow down — and talk to someone you trust. Don’t let a scammer rush you. Never wire money, put money on a gift or cash reload card, or send cash to an online love interest. You won’t get it back. Contact your bank right away if you think you’ve sent money to a scammer. Report your experience to: • The online dating site • Federal Trade Commission: ftc.gov/complaint • Federal Bureau of Investigation: ic3.gov. Learn more at ftc.gov/imposters and aba.com/engagement

I met Herman on Dec 4th using POF. He said he was Norwegian and lived in Dewitt NY. Right before we were to meet, he suddenly was called away for work as a structural engineer on an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico. We talked and texted for weeks. I was so fooled by his charm and warmth. He had a few mishaps on the oil rig and suddenly needed to purchase a replacement pipe for the sum of $20,000.00. He had only half of that and sent me videos of his inability to transfer funds from a foreign bank acct . Then, it happened. He asked me for the $10,000.00. I immediately shut him down and hung up. His text messages pleaded with me to forgive him. I called him and told him he had given me the #1 red flag for online dating. He was so sorry. Well, I forgave him. The next day he texted and asked for the money again. I told him to never text or call me. He responded, "Wow" I blocked him. His full name he gave was Herman Bredesen.

Has anyone had an encounter with a Jenkins David????? He states he’s a civil engineer deployed in Japan and can’t talk on the phone or video chat due to a contract. Asked if I would send money for his internet otherwise we won’t be able to communicate. States that he loves me and I am the one he wants to spend the rest of his life with.

I had a man approach me on Twitter, he calls himself "Gavy Gunter", shows great pictures of himself and talked about how he works on an offshore UK drilling rig, under contract as a mechanical engineer. He asked me to give him Google hangout address to continue to talk. He presented himself as a widower of four years who's wife died in a car accident. He talked about having a 14 year old daughter in boarding school in Elmira NY. Professes his love for me after only talking a short time. Ends his chats with multiple heart emojis. Today he asked me to send him a ebay gift card in the amount of $100. for his daughter because he wanted her to be happy. I felt immediately that all his efforts at getting to know me were all leading up to a scam. When I confronted him on how inappropriate it was for him to ask that of me he was enraged and ask me how I dared to speak to him that way. I cut it off and blocked him but I think others should know he is not for real.

Hi all, i thought i'd post this experience to help others. I met this *lovely christian* on CoffeeMeetsBagel, and Faith was extremely important to me. He is a chemical engineer, an American living in Scotland (+44 7537 146599). Infrequent and inconsistent contact, yet very quickly claimed love. Most definitely a sweet talker. For a little bit, he appeared busy and down, as he was working really hard to fight for a contract in Turkey. Then one day, he shared the great news that he won the contract, and needed to work in turkey immediately, for the next 2-3bmonths. Due to the excitement, he bought mom and me gifts! Then one day he shared that his waistbag fell in the water, which contained all the cash he required to feed his workers. I asked what i could do to help, if i could send money to help (more to test) . He said no, he had enough to pull through the next week. Very quickly, maybe a few days later. He appeared frustrated as his cash was going down. He kept asking if i had received gift. He then explained that, I would have to pay Charge to receive the present and it should not be more than Usd2000. However he didnt want me to spend money, so in the gift box he put enough cash for me to: 1. Pay the charge, 2. For my upkeep and 3. Send the remaining back to him so that he could feed his worker! The next day, I received an whatsapp message from a courier, who claimed that for the custom clearence and oversized package, I need to pay 3700 to have the gift delivered. I returned the call via my phone provide, I was told that the number was disconnected. Then i whatsapp to ask why, and asked details of the courier company. I was sent a link to the shipping company for live chat. I never clicked on that link. I looked up the site, it was there, but looked sus. After my further polite questions, the courier appeared impolite and rude... This is not how we operate. Either you follow the instruction, or you wont get the parcel... Then my sweetheart all of a sudden had all the time for me. I was not able to talk much due to work. However as soon as i got home, I video called him for the first time. He hung up on me. He said rig policy, no video chat as it could cause explosion. Aha! Then he pressed me for paying the charge. I started to question politely. In the end, I went, I have been scammed. He asked why i stop trusting him. I then said, i have been scammed. He was like, what? He asked why i suddenly stop trusting him. I told him that, as i shared, I prayed for this everyday and i know that im being watched over. God opened my eyes and i see that you are a scammer, and God is real. He is a very goodlooking asian man. A bit about myself, reasonably cute fit, active, well educated, and have a good job. I felt a bit ashamed. But still i am here, to share the experience, to help.

My user name is a scammers name: Christina Kivi. Of course this isn't her real name it's her made up scammer name. Her fake job is Interior design and she's working on a "Big" job in Turkey. Many scammers use this lie, a big job in Turkey! My guess is they're from there. Also, she never answered the phone when I called and always had excuses why she couldn't answer her phone. Another thing scammers say is their family is dead and/or they are widowers. They also profess their love very quickly and want to know all about your job so they can get an idea of what you make $. They also have bad tempers and will quickly fly into a rage if they don't get their way. They also ask A LOT of questions and try to get personal details quickly. Don't give your full name/real name until you know someone is real. Don't use an email address with your real name- use a generic email address until you know someone well. Remember, scammers are collecting bits and pieces of information about you to Scam you!

I met a guy a few weeks back. Says he’s on an oil rig New Orleans of the Gulf of Mexico. Everything was going great. Says his wife was shot dead as she was in the military and he has 2 sons aged 6 and 10. We spoke on the phone and video chatted. Then last week he messaged me and he was frantic as he said he was assisting his colleague and didn’t see where he had his foot and fell through and into the ocean.. lost his phone and wallet... and need gift card so he could get the guy that delivers groceries to the rig to get him a phone so we can keep chatting. At first he wanted $500 and I said no I can’t afford that so he said $200 I said no... he then said “babe I need to keep in touch with you” I said I wasn’t going anywhere and to contact me when he gets a phone and to focus on staying in touch with his boys who is being looked after by a nanny. So much more but I knew he was scamming me as soon as he asked for gift cards. I’m hurt but I will get over it. I didn’t send one red cent.

I believe my mother is being scammed. She claims to have been talking to a man named John Peson from North Carolina. He claims he is an accountant and has went to Africa for a week for work. He says he is a widow due to his wife dying from giving childbirth. He came out of nowhere on her Facebook messenger and was very consistent. They ended up talking on the hanging out app. While he is so called in Africa on work he asked her to send three $100.00 Amazon gift cards so they can talk on the phone. I told her Amazon gift cards are not used for that and that it is a scam. He has been asking when is her next pay day if you all come across someone with similar made up stories please be aware he is a scammer.

Has anyone spoken with a Vincent Marvin. From Denmark, but lives in Florida? He contacted my mom via Facebook messenger. If you search Facebook there are tons of fake socket accounts in Facebook under this name. He uses the oil rig story, needed a new iPhone as he dropped his in the water. Then he was in Turkey and stuck on a business trip and not able to get home, looking for help. He has been stranded in other places as well. He always seems to be getting the shaft when it comes to getting paid. He has used religion and God specifically to win my mom over. He has put his ‘daughter’ on the phone to show his family to her as well. Only communication is via Facebook messenger, Google Hangouts. He has asked for iTunes gift cards, Amazon gift cards to get by with and promises to pay back as soon as he gets some money. What kind of progress is being made to arrest these criminals? Honest, good-hearted people are being ripped off!!

I was scammed by a man whose name was Maxwell Coke, He was on an oil rig in the Black Sea. From Texas but had homes there and Georgia. Born in TX but lived in Spain most of life. He was an only child, wife died of cancer, no children and I was the love of his life. He asked me for $100.000. Was advised not to send it - thankfully I did not.I have 2 pictures he sent me. He needed this amount of money to pay for equipment he had rented for the rig that caused a a fire which killed 2 of his crew members. He lost all id, in China trying to replace the equipment. and was sued by family members of the family of his dead crew members for $500,000 plus hospital bells for each member. He said I was the love of his life even though he was 20 years younger than I. He is slick and full of romantic words. He chatted on Hangouts for 5 months and he wanted to get married if I would send this money. Fortunately I did not. First of all if someone tells you they love you after 2/3 days They are definitely a scammer I have learned keeping them on the actual dating app and ensuring that you give them no personal information because I have almost been caught several times sleeping and the worst part is looking for someone to just comfort you and love you spending time with you that is how they get you ladies we have to pay more attention and be more aware.

On January 11, 2020, I met a man on Facebook through messenger app, by the name of Dr. Tom Lucky who says that he works for the United Nation and currently working in Australia due to the wild fires. Tom is handsome and charming man who just blew me away with the attention he gave me. But here lies the problem, Tom has two children Jessica 15 and Oscar who turned 10 on Feb. 10. He even had his children send me email tell me how happy he was since meeting me. His wife died two years ago from breast cancer. We talked two and three times a day, making sure our schedules matched up. Until it got closer to his son's birthday....he asked me if I thought it good idea if he bought a iPhone for Oscar. I asked if he was a good student and a good kid. He said both kids was good and their Nanny makes sure they gets what they need. But, he asked me to buy two iphones for each child. I explained to him the only way I could do that was to add them to my T-Mobile account. I called T-Mobile and I needed $400.00 as a down payment. Which I was okay with, but Tom wanted me to buy them out right. Each phone cost $700.00 and I don't have that kind of money. I was so upset that we were fighting over money and I just couldn't deal with that. I decided to block him on all social media. I told him that I reported him to the FBI and the United Nations. I haven't spoken to him since. It broke my heart that this man was trying to scam me. I told him I wasn't comfortable with buying presents for people I never met. I'm so glad that I didn't buy those phones. There are some horrible people out here, doing some really mean stuff. Just be on guard.
