Looking to start a new relationship? For some, that may mean meeting a new love interest online. Word to the wise: sometimes it’s best to lead with your head and not your heart.

Millions of Americans use dating sites, social networking sites, and chat rooms to meet people. And many forge successful relationships. But scammers also use these sites to meet potential victims. They create fake profiles to build online relationships, and eventually convince people to send money in the name of love.

The Federal Trade Commission receives thousands of reports each year about romance scammers who create fake online relationships only to steal their victims’ money.

Unfortunately, an online love interest who asks for money is almost certainly a scam artist.

The FTC’s new infographic, developed with the American Bankers Association Foundation, lists common signs of online dating scams and what to do if someone you meet online asks you for money.

Below are some tips to identify a real romance versus a scammer cruising for a target.

Online Dating Scams. Has an online love interest asked you for money? That's a scam. Scammers know millions of people use online dating sites. They are there, too, hiding behind fake profiles. Signs of a scam: Professes love quickly. Claims to be from the U.S., but is overseas for business or military service. Asks for money, and lures you off the dating site. Claims to need money — for emergencies, hospital bills, or travel. Plans to visit, but can’t because of an emergency. $220 million lost in 2016. $56 million lost in 2012. Reports to the FBI tripled over 5 years (4,476 reports in 2012; 14,546 reports in 2016) What to do: Slow down — and talk to someone you trust. Don’t let a scammer rush you. Never wire money, put money on a gift or cash reload card, or send cash to an online love interest. You won’t get it back. Contact your bank right away if you think you’ve sent money to a scammer. Report your experience to: • The online dating site • Federal Trade Commission: ftc.gov/complaint • Federal Bureau of Investigation: ic3.gov. Learn more at ftc.gov/imposters and aba.com/engagement

Please share this information with others. Victims may be embarrassed to talk about their experiences, but you can help. A simple phone call, email or text, saying “Look what I just found” and sharing this information may make a difference in someone else’s life.

An Italian man that went by Roberto Ricci reached out to me on Meetup. He invited me to continue chatting on Google Hangouts. Similar to many stories on here, he starts professing love without meeting me, says he is widowed as of 3 years, and has a 17 year old daughter in Italy. We spoke on the phone and texted. After about a week, he asks me to get an itunes card for "just $300" for his daughter who needs it because he can't while he's busy in Canada. I couldn't believe he thought I would fall for that. His Google Hangouts address is w r807765

This guy Peter Feliks , Oil Rig engineer, from San Diego. Widowed with a daughter hit me up on Instagram. Then would reach out to me everyday. I never took it seriously from any guy that reaches out to me from there. Then he asked me to send him and Apple Card . Then I knew it was a scam and called him out on it. Then he kept trying to deny it. Loser.

I met a man named Michael lycett, he said he was living in Seabrook NH, he said everything I wanted to hear, then gradually he started to ask for money saying he had a big job coming up. Later on I found out he had a nine page record, he wrote false checks to banks, he went through my car and stole my social security number and my bank information, later on I found out he had a history on doing his to woman when I read his report . He would move state to state mass, florida, Indiana, new hampershire, so he never gets caught.

Anyone familiar with "DeapLive" on Facebook or Deap other social media? He's so good at his scam, of it werent for a few lucky breaks, I never would have figured out that 7k was all he wanted. So violating. The whole thing. But I know other women will probably never see theinformation I was fortunate to look at. He is not even remorseful, I hope an authority can put a stop to this destructive con artist...

this guy Richard Morgan friended me on twitter then asked for me to sign into hangouts, I did. This just happened yesterday evening. he said he is on on oil rig in Scotland and he is an engineer. gave me sad story about his sister and him being in an orphanage since the age of 13 his sister 8. they got out and his sister and husband were killed in a car accident. he has a son, name of Joseph who is 10 living in a boarding school in Italy. His mom died during child birth. he said he gives 60% of his money to the orphanage and 40% to the school his son is in. He asked for a amazon card or a stream card because 2 months out of the year he is on the oil rig he has no computer. He sent pictures of him and his son and the oil rig he is supposed to be on. Just told him all about me being poor and sickly. He rights back letting me know he was working now and he will chat later when he has a break period. after reading this I'm worried he ain't who he said he is. He said I was beautiful and I have never been called beautiful only cute, which I don't mind. what do you think. Has anybody else talk to this guy??

I met a guy on dating app coffee meets bagels. We’ve never met in person but he keeps asking for money. He says he went overseas on business and he can’t return because he’s in trouble and locked up. Now he continues to ask for money thru Bitcoin wallet. I’ve refused to send him money now but I did send before. It sucks but I have to come to terms that he’s a scammer.

I’m sorry some of you guys got scammed or conned! 1. They quickly message you because they are interested 2. Take conversation offline 3. Never want to do a FaceTime or video chat 4. It’s like having a conversation with different people 5. Keep track of your conversation 6. The minute they start telling you about their business struggle, ask them if this is where they ask for money 7. That of course is the end and you won’t hear from them 8. Ladies, be wise. If it’s too good to be true it probably is! These evil men and women pray on desperate people. It’s not worth it! Please be wise in who you connect with and don’t give them your hard earned monry

I have been writing e-mails to a girl I met on the dating website Continental Singles and she is supposedly from Texas but she said that she was born in Australia. We were exchanging e-mails and lovely thoughts, she said she fell in love with me because she needed somebody in her life, a husband and a family. She then told me that she had to travel to China to buy some appliances because she told me that she has an exporting-importing business of electronic goods. But then she told me that she had a problem yesterday, that somebody broke into her car and lost her wallet. I then wrote her that I feel so bad for that and I said that I will pray to God so that she can be safe until she can go back to the states safe. I haven't gotten an e-mail from her yet but I bet that she will ask me for money. But since I think with my brain and not with my heart, i am protected mentally-emotionally for that. If she asks me for money I will totally block her. Thank God for this great site for being a sort of personal saviour of people who are vulnerable to be scammed in the internet

Hi has anyone here been scammed by someone asking you to log into their bank account and transfer money on their behalf to another person? I met this guy online a few months ago and he gave me his bank information and asked me to transfer money to a realtor in order for him to repair and sell a house that he had inherited. I didn’t do it because it sounded fishy.

Hello people, I don't normally post on these forums, but I really needed to share this in hopes it will avoid someone being ripped off. I was contacted via Tinder from a guy named John Kamprad, supposedly an architect but I was never able to find anything on him online. He was supposedly Swedish living in Fort Worth, Texas. He quickly guided the conversation to Hangouts. I chatted with him for about a week; we talked romance, and shared interests. He even sent me links to music videos. We seemed to have things in common, the whole bit. There were red flags but I thought they were more personality red flags. His angle was that he lives with his 16 year old daughter after mom cheated and moved out. Out of the blue, he said he was leaving for South Korea that Sat morning. When he arrived he sent a picture letting me know he arrived safely. The picture looked a little suspect because although there were similarities, his face looked a little different than the other photos. Once in "South Korea" all of a sudden his dilemma was that he had been trying to find an iTunes card for his daughter but they did not have them over there. He ask me to purchase an iTunes card and send the code to his daughter's email address which he provided and he would 'make it up to me'. I almost did, but it just did not seem right; he almost had me. He even sent me a screen shot of his bank account showing $7.5 million dollars in a checking with a picture of himself on the account and a visa credit line of $38,000 assuring me that he had the money but he could not make transactions in South Korea; he had cash but the iTunes cards were not available there. These scammers are very sophisticated and obviously have time on their hands. After really looking at the screen shot I discovered a spelling error in the name of the credit union. Got cha! After several back and forth messages where he got very irritated, the mask slipped completely off. The strange thing after I told him I was on to him, he reverted back to the 'sweet romantic' lines that hooked me. It seemed almost robotic. I was like is this a live person or what. Ladies and gentlemen be aware. There are evil people online to steal your money and whatever they desire from you. We are left feeling foolish and used; don't be a victim, never send these people money. If it's too good to be true, it probably is (a scam)!

I have had a similar experience like many people here. I met the so called George Rodriguez on Muslima.com which is a Muslim matrimonial website. He claimed he was a widow and lost his late wife to cancer and had a 6 year old daughter named Isabella who was living with his mom in Maryland while he was in Australia because he needed time to gather himself after his wife’s death. He claimed he worked in crude oil and they went off shore at times. He asked that we communicate on WhatsApp so we continued our conversations there. He came across as very sweet and very well spoken. He said he had a vacation coming up and could come and meet me before he goes to visit his daughter and mom. We agreed to meet November first and he’d stay for 4 days so we can get to know one another. Throughout the 3 weeks he didn’t ask for ANYTHING rather he came across as very caring, confessed his love oh so quickly, shared pictures of himself (I know he stole someone’s pictures and planned everything out and used the images to fit his stories) but things changed when he was at the airport and suddenly sends messages saying he’s in trouble at the Malaysian airport because he was traveling with $15000 And the law is you can only carry $10000 or less and they confiscated his money and either they’ll jail him or he can get a certificate which costs money to allow him to continue his travels. Of course I trusted him because he gave me no reason not to so I sent him the money via western union then an hour later he messages again saying he was supposed to get an international certificate and he needs more money so he asked me to send money through RIA which I had never heard of before but my luck I found a Ria location near me and sent more money. He was extremely thankful and said he’d send my money back to me before he boarded his flight but it never happened. Come the next morning the day he was supposed to show up he messages me saying he’s in Dubai and in more trouble because the letter was supposed to be in Arabic! He asked for more money and that’s when it hit me. I googled scams in Malaysia and sure enough immediately I found information. I was torn! I told him I sent him the last of what I had and I couldn’t help him anymore. He said he emailed his mom who was also traveling and was waiting on her to check his email because she didn’t have her number on roaming so couldn’t reach her via phone. I told him to ask a friend and he said he asked a buddy who said he can only help with a short amount but he needed a total of $1500 and half needed to be sent to Malaysia to get the certificate in Arabic and half was a fine Dubai was charging him. I asked him why he couldn’t use the cash he had and he said they told him he couldn’t leave the room and send money to Malaysia. It became evident that he was a scam and didn’t care that he stole my hard earned money given I’m a single mother and also have a family to feed. He kept insisting I pull money out of my credit cards or borrow from a friend. I told him I couldn’t do either and that’s when his tone changed and he said I couldn’t help him or wouldn’t? I then screen shot the info I found online and sent it to him and he said I shouldn’t be judging all with a few and that he loved me and wouldn’t ever just take my hard earned money. I asked him to send me a picture of himself at the airport so I know it’s actually him and he said what difference would that make. He said he couldn’t take a picture while being held and I said if you’re allowed to use your phone to text why can’t you take a picture and send it since your phone is facing you anyways. At that point he blocked me and that was the end to it! I’m torn but I learned my lesson.

I’d been tried to be scammed by other guys in online sites but never took them seriously since their stories are over the top. One guy is actually the same person in skype, gorgeous, but still did not take him seriously. I just finally gave him $40 iTunes card, coz I figured, the guy entertained me for almost 2 months and then cut him off. Then this new guy Paul messaged me in OkCupid. He is so polite and gentle. He lives in Greenwich village and originally from Netherlands. He s not like the others where they want to marry you or professes their love to you or always complimenting you. He just sounded like a nice guy. After a week of texting, he had to go to Philippines for a 10 day project. It sounded legit because everything he says I know because I grew up there. I even tested him a few times without him realizing it. He talks like normal and I was so happy. I thought I finally found the guy. We were going to meet a week later when he comes back. His 10 days turn into weeks because he’s trying to get the retainer fee for the lawyers from the bank, her sister, brother in law Sam. It’s 280k which is 5% of what he’s supposed to make. Then he asked me for a loan of 10k, my world sunk. I thought he’s different. I accused him of being fraud then he stopped talking to me. The thing is he’s not pressuring me. He’s upset that I put him in he same category as the other guys. I told him that I have no money because of divorce fees. He got a loan from a loan shark. We started talking again until he asked for 3k. He needed to register his company. He said he doesn’t like the fact that I don’t trust him and that he will pay me back. I politely said no and he thanked me and said good night. He stopped texting again because I said sorry for wasting his time. I guess that’s accusing him again. I almost gave him the benefit of the doubt because he’s in a desperate situation stuck in the Philippines. I’m still in denial but holding onto my guns not to give him anything. Could it be possible that he’s telling the truth or I’m just in denial? He sounds so legit, not like the other shady guys.

I met a guy on Words with Friends who seemed friendly enough. From Spain, wife died, supposedly worked for Red Bull. He immediately said we were meant for each other, called me sweetie. Then asked me for $100 since he had phone issues. I just needed to get an Amazon card, take photo of it, etc. I then blocked him from calling or texting me. He then said he got a new phone so I shouldn't punish a "good Christian man" because he loves me so much and we were meant to be together. So Is free a few weeks and him trying to get me to play Words, said hi, how are you doing, etc. Now he has asked me for $10,000 and is planning to spend Christmas with me. He supposedly lives in another state and I have never given him my address. BTW he has claimed he will get a $250,000 from Red Bull, and will buy me an island but now he needs $10,000 for taxes, etc. Finally told him he is a scammer and threatened to contact Words with Friends and the police. Hello: My mother has been involved in several scams. The first was romance which led to her investing her entire 401k in a byte coin fake investment. She still believes that the "german" broker did invest her money. He goes by the name of "THE POPE". Who knows if this was made up specially for her as she is a Catholic. He is now supposedly in prison and his "wife" is trying to make his debts right. She has been contacted numerous times for gift card purchases. They also tell her someone will be stopping by her house to pick up and give her the money. Despite all of us telling her this is not real she continues to correspond and believe that the money is coming back to her. If anyone else has experienced this scam I'd love to hear so I can show her more evidence of it being fake. WHATSAPP is a very popular spot for her to communicate with these fraudsters.

I met a man on wwf about 5 weeks ago, very good player. I made the mistake of chatting with him on the side panel of the game. He had a very nice photo, handsome grandfather. Pic with a cute 3 or 4 year old in his arms. I’m old, live in a nursing home situation, and of course lonely. I have a picture of me on the wwf site about 30 years younger. He said I was beautiful, blah, blah, blah...he wanted to take me on trips and out to dinner, show me his home in Lansing, Michigan. He did not care about my age , wheelchair bound. I was the person he hoped to start a new chapter with. The name he goes by is Greg Anderson, or Greg anderison, he pursuaded me to go to hangouts , I figured out how to do it. He said he was an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico. He had been doing this line of work for 28 years, he is 73’ wife had died of kidney cancer and he had one daughter..I bought it all hook, line and sinker. I tried to ask him questions about his background, never gave me a straight answer. Said he would tell me all the details later. Then about 3 days ago, he asked me to get him a wal mart card, he needed to upgrade his computer. He had a 6.5 million contract and he got a 130.000 bonus every four months. Dah!!! But he wanted me to get a wal mart gift card...all the while he had found his true love, I did manage to send a couple of pictures..he said he was the petroleum engineer in charge of 130 men. He was the top dog. He got downright mushy, darling this, sweetheart that, he said he had had 650,000 stolen from his bank account back home, he had no access to any funds. The minute he asked for money. I called an abrupt halt, told him bye, bye. Greg Anderson is the name this person goes by, very nice looking. He even sent me earlier pictures of himself, one in a suit, one in a body building pose, and one at a plush restaurant . Beware, beware.

Meet “ Mr. right” on a date app In September of this year. Handsome, workout and very charming . Claims to be from Sweden. A Civil Engineer from South Dakota . Contracted in Istanbul Turkey. Sent me beautiful poems. My first phone conversation with JAKE was odd. I asked him where he was located ? He didn’t know . ?!?! Right away professed his undying love for me. Asked me to remove my profile. I was going to be his wife. Just a few weeks into our texting he asked me for money. Troubles with his contract. Blah blah blah. I confronted Jake and he got angry and said he was going to hang on to me. He said he’s a Christian. Round 2. Proceed with caution. Another month passed. Again asking for money. Istanbul seized his equipment . Needing to Pay his taxes first. I told him No! That’s when he leaves me a voice mail proclaiming his love for me. Trying to pull on my heart strings. I never got emotional attached because I had an intuition something wasn’t right. I played along to gather more information. He sent me a photo with 2 other guys. I called them the three amigos. They all work together. Turkey, Contractor, Accent, liar, smart . Beautiful smile. He goes by Jake . His kids are in boarding school . I’m a Christian. Doesn’t mean I’m desperate or Vulnerable. A wolf in sheep’s clothing.

I have similar situation. His name is Richard M. Lester, He is German, Civil Engineer from Illinois and is in Istanbul, Turkey for a contract. Very charming, sent love poems every day and how much he loves me and wants to marry me. He has been asking me for money to pay a fine for an accident where he killed a boy and the judged asked him to compensate the family with $10k. I told him I will send the money via USA Consulate and he is mad at me. He keeps insisting is not fair what i'm trying to do and I should trust him.

Ladies beware of men approaching you on Words With Friends game. First they just chat and then I was asked for my cell phone number so we could message them. They claim to be from the USA but are overseas. A different guy wanted me to install Google Hangouts app to chat more. I chatted for several weeks just in texts. Then he did a video chat and he wanted to give me a ring as soon as he got on land. He claimed to be from USA and moved to Europe but now was on an oil rig. He wanted to marry me which was weird because I told him in texts I was not interested in marriage. He was going to come and be with me for the rest of his life. I was checking into how to do an International background check and found all kinds of romance scams. The circumstances were too similar and I was thinking he would ask me for money. I just bailed. My deceased husband always said if it's to good to be true it probably is and I think he sent me a sign that this was one of these instances. My advice is ladies please don't get caught up in these scams. I was just playing a game and not looking for love. I think these guys love to tug on our heartstrings just be careful out there.

Hello, I'm talking to someone who claims to be a singer in music. He is really good. Loves me, says im his ride or die, references marrying me, meeting but cant now because it's not safe and doesnt want anything out in the media or people involved because everyone is looking for something from him. He says hes not making money touring at fairs and small bars. But he says hes trying to work on money matters with his attorney. I suggested he sell something and he got upset saying hjose could i suggest he sell his house, intend to leave it for his kids. Asked me for steam game cards. For his son and now asking for his daughters. Sometimes he talks and facts seem to fit and he's genuine. Other times little things are red flags. I think i want to believe in him. I told myself i wouldn't send him anything a second time. Now i'm out $100 but now he wants $300-500. He isn't always accessible, we only text, I've sent pictures, video snips but he won't send me anything, said i need to be patient, patient dog gets the bone. Has anyone had this similar story. How do i really know?
