Looking to start a new relationship? For some, that may mean meeting a new love interest online. Word to the wise: sometimes it’s best to lead with your head and not your heart.

Millions of Americans use dating sites, social networking sites, and chat rooms to meet people. And many forge successful relationships. But scammers also use these sites to meet potential victims. They create fake profiles to build online relationships, and eventually convince people to send money in the name of love.

The Federal Trade Commission receives thousands of reports each year about romance scammers who create fake online relationships only to steal their victims’ money.

Unfortunately, an online love interest who asks for money is almost certainly a scam artist.

The FTC’s new infographic, developed with the American Bankers Association Foundation, lists common signs of online dating scams and what to do if someone you meet online asks you for money.

Below are some tips to identify a real romance versus a scammer cruising for a target.

Online Dating Scams. Has an online love interest asked you for money? That's a scam. Scammers know millions of people use online dating sites. They are there, too, hiding behind fake profiles. Signs of a scam: Professes love quickly. Claims to be from the U.S., but is overseas for business or military service. Asks for money, and lures you off the dating site. Claims to need money — for emergencies, hospital bills, or travel. Plans to visit, but can’t because of an emergency. $220 million lost in 2016. $56 million lost in 2012. Reports to the FBI tripled over 5 years (4,476 reports in 2012; 14,546 reports in 2016) What to do: Slow down — and talk to someone you trust. Don’t let a scammer rush you. Never wire money, put money on a gift or cash reload card, or send cash to an online love interest. You won’t get it back. Contact your bank right away if you think you’ve sent money to a scammer. Report your experience to: • The online dating site • Federal Trade Commission: ftc.gov/complaint • Federal Bureau of Investigation: ic3.gov. Learn more at ftc.gov/imposters and aba.com/engagement

Please share this information with others. Victims may be embarrassed to talk about their experiences, but you can help. A simple phone call, email or text, saying “Look what I just found” and sharing this information may make a difference in someone else’s life.

This guy, talks a good game Sweet, thoughtful, attentive - concerned, caring - and so in love with you. His name is Major John Thomson Siva, born in Sweden, Dad born in states, Mum born in UK - and he was born and brought up in Sweden for 24 years, before going to California and joining the US army. His written english is very good, almost perfect. Because he is, active service, no incoming or outgoing calls. His laptop and cell / mobile phone are older models, so no video chat. That is his prime story. He was born on the 21st of April 1961; his wife died ten years ago in an accident(type unknown), and he had a 4-year-old daughter at the time. He put her in a boarding school in Sweden and continued his work with the military. Her name is Mary, and she wants her daddy to get her a new mummy. The daughter is now 14. He put his resignation paperwork in a year ago, and he is due to be released soon, maybe the 20th of December 2019. He wants to spend Christmas with me. I said, you should spend Christmas with your daughter, and he said no, it was more important for him to be here with me. I then went to a US Army website which speaks of dating fraud, and it said ask for his unit# and his MOS. I asked him for this, the subject was changed and he never answered. Last Friday he mssaged that he was not sleeping, stressed, anxious. This is a guy who claims he is out on patrol every day with his men. A guy who needs a clear head! Of course, I asked why. The bank deposit for the carer of his daughter did not go through. He had frantically trying to access his bank account online. He spent countless hours, and he was locked out. I told him to call his bank. He said he had got in touch with him, that they felt he was hacked or providing financial support to the Taliban. That he'd have to go into his bank in person to fix things. His bank is in Sweden, and he is unable to get there obviously. I then told him, his bank has many branches. I then did a search for military assistance, who could help him temporarily. he ignored it. Today, he said I had to help him, now, today! He gave me an email address, for me to PayPal 1000Euro to him, for his daughter's care. I sent .o1pence to the email address provided, it came back as having been sent to €0.01 EUR to Joseph Simeone. Below is other info about him. He is cute as hell, I do have 4 or 5 photos of him that he sent me, if it is even him. I have been dating a guy online for awhile. All of a sudden he has asked for money. He is supposed to be a Maj in the US army in Kabul. He asked me to send 1000 euro to this email address using PayPal jonova45 @ he has been using jthomson732 @ , as his personal email address. He uses 'Hangout', John Thomson as his 'hangout' name, BUT he says his name is John Thomson Silva, major in the US army in Kabul. I have asked for his unit #; and have not been given one. I have asked for his MOS, and also not been given one. When he asked me for money, I asked for his address, to send him a gift. To which he replied - this is a war zone, we do not get things from people on the outside. I know this is complete bull. The people in the forces look forward to getting post. So, this is a confirmed lie.

Oh! I met the wonderful Henry Coleman from Bakersfield, CA. Claimed to be a petroleum engineer working in Denmark, but was stationed in an oil rig in the north sea. Used to work for Shell but now decided to be an independent contractor and would be back home in a week, but oh no! He is having problems with his software and needs me to purchase eBay cards so that he can do the upgrades. Why eBay gift cards? Well, thats where he buys it from. He meant to tell me that You buy highly specialized computer software from eBay. If i don't well then, he wont be able to go back home for the next month. This was not sounding right from the start, he had weird obsession with my financial status and wanting to pay all of my debts, he wanted to be with me but because of work it was impossible. Thing is, these people are getting better and better. He has absolutely no online presence, so his name brings nothing up as well as reverse searching his pictures. The name of his “company” is placed no where near him. His phone number tracks back to Texas and this whatsapp number tracks to another place. You are never able to talk to him or video call him because of the bad reception in the rig. And noone else can help him only you because if he tries to buy these things they will freeze his accounts and he is not home to fix it. Guys! Beware! If something is too good don't trust it, no one will ever ask for you money or make you do weird things. Also, inform others! I was glad that I found similar stories and avoided me from wasting my time.

One more comment on a scammer named Greg Anderson... I posted my original story about him on Nov 20th, 2019. He is still on wwf, I have not played him, but can look him up in my current players. He has a two new pictures, one of a cute fluffy tiny white dog, maybe a Pomeranian breed. The other picture he is using looks like a small stack of books with a butterfly on top. Please be careful, he is EXTREMELY SMOOTH. His lines are very , very romantic. He may change his story with every person, who knows.

I have posted a couple of times about my scammer Jon Bach Fitzpatrick. He speaks French and claims to be an artist from Texas and Long Island. I finally found the person who's pictures he is using and Jon admitted he was a scammer. He thinks we are all stupid and easily fooled. Jon is Nigerian and without a soul or conscience. Now that he has been caught I am sure that he has changed names and photos but I think he will stick to his pathetic script. Please beware!

She followed me and started talking to me like she loves me and wanted to be with me. She has an iPhone but uses a fake number to talk to me and I have sent her stream gift cards in the past cause she needs it to use her phone. We keep talking but I just want to see if she’s legitimate or has anyone else been scammed by her? All the help would be appreciated thank you

I have been chatting with someone since June. I have given him $300 for a suit he had to have. He was in a job in Hong Kong. And was coming to supposedly see me in September but he was supposedly in taxi accident and has been in hospital. He wanted me pay medical bills of only $1800. I would not send it and told him taxi service should cover it. After back and forth for weeks they paid his bills. Now he doesn’t like their food and I have read the food is not good at hospital he is in. He wants $250 for a weeks worth of food. I have not sent it but of course he makes me feel guilty since today is Thanksgiving. I think $250 is a lot. Also I did a search on TinEye of the picture in his suit and it found it in 2018 and 2017 so that should be enough proof he’s lying isn’t it? There are pictures with about 20 different names of him but he claims he was scammed by them and blames them for picture in suit. I just need someone to tell me he is scamming me and not send anymore money. He is really guilting me which I know is what they are good at.

He was full of flattery to good to be true so when the first time money came up I started searching for like cases of scammers. Then I confronted him and he of course reassured me but I was watching for it. The next he said something he vanished when I wouldn't help. But ladies he was a smooth talker.

I was contacted on the Zoosk dating site. Said his name was Richard Benson. Was a petroleum engineer in the Atlantic Ocean, but lived in Diamondhead, MS. Really smooth, until we got closer for him to come home. Then he needed me to transfer his money to, what I know now was a fake account. I thought I was okay. Next, he asked me for money. I didn’t send it. I dumped him and it ripped my heart out. I can’t believe how cruel people are! I still have the phone number and e-mail address. Not sure if anything can be done! It’s amazing the lengths they will go to. There were 2 others, as well. When you get close to meeting, they disappear!

Yes this is the same. Person and scenario that I had contact with from November to February. I know how it feels. Very slick until I called him out on his scam and said I should apologize and said I want to leave him on the oil rig. I told him to get a job and stop scamming women. We should put this behind us and continue to stand stand as women. I filed a report also with Zoosk . Women against scammers keep strong

I was contacted on facebook.by a man named Chris Hasset. We were only talking. He suddenly starts saying he very interested in me. This has been going on for over two weeks . He has sent numerous pics of himself and his children. He says he is a pipeline engineer on a BP rig 190 miles south of New Orleans , LA. This guy says his company phone's internet connection needs topped off. He ask me to buy him a Google apps card worth a hundred dollars to help him with his internet connection. He didn't say how he would use this card to get his internet connection to improve. He has promised me the moon. I am still very leery. He has not put a lot of pressure on me about it. He tells me he can use the Google app card to get a stronger internet connection On the rig. He wants the card to be worth $100.00. My question is can a Google app money card be used to bolster his internet connection? All of his pics match consistently too. I have read up on the Google app card and it does not mention it can be used for that type of application. Can it be used for improving a connection or buying internet connection? I feel silly asking these questions but at the same time there seems to be believability concerning him. I have investigated all types of scams concerning money cards and Google apps cards. I just need to know if this could have a remote possibility of being true. Thanks!

I have had two men from Plenty of Fish dating app. recently tell me they were going to Instanbul, Turkey for business. Coincidence? Or scam? Now thinking scam, I’ve told the second guy I can’t even afford to drive 3 hours away. I called him out, but then I researched the company he supposedly owns and there is a website and he messaged me from the number listed on the business website so I second guessed it thinking maybe this guy is for real and although I told him I can’t afford anything he’s still talking to me. And yes professing love quickly, I just played along. He’s supposedly on the flight now. Seeing these other comments has me convinced now, so do I just stop texting with with him or call him out again?

Apparently the.machine broke down and he is responsible for it and cant leave until it is fixed. Also is a trader with Forex. Wanted his accountant to send me money just so I would have some, then send him the rest so he could fix the machine and.be home before Christmas. I said no to the money because 1. Dont need it and 2. Just. Not doing it. When I said no, he said that due to company policy they cant send the money directly to him. I still did no, and he finally quit I called him out on being a scammer and he of course denied it. Just told me he is in love with me and wants me to move to canada, he even has asked my ring size. All his pictures are old as be says he is 50. When I asked for a current picture he says his camera is broken on his phone. My friend was contacted by a "Captain Harry Jones" who said he was the Captain of the Royal Princess, divorced two years, had sole custody of his five year old daughter who lived with a nanny in SC because her mother was a drug addict. Some of the recent photos he has sent her looked photoshopped. Shes already sent money via Western Union because he "dropped" his phone in the water while "taking" the cruise ship to Manila. Now he says he's coming here to meet her. Sent her a "letter" that he put her on with Princess as his wife, that they ran a background check so now he has her social security numbers address everything. Does any of this sound like what you went thru?

Guy on Pof goes by the name Alec Muller. Good looking, older, white beard, very muscular, works out, claims to be German, lives in the U.S but works overseas. The minute he asked me for money I knew, I just said “Sure Sweetheart”. Hung up, blocked him on my phone and sent him an email not to ever contact me again.
